ABSTRACT Internationalism has been an important characteristic of Springfield College since the very beginning of the school. Founded in 1885 as the School for Christian Workers, one of the main purposes of Springfield College was to train YMCA professionals. This included secretaries (administrators/CEO’s) and physical directors (professionals who ran the gymnasiums and gymnasium programs). Moreover, Springfield College’s academic programs, such as physical education and sport training related programs, attracted many international students involved in YMCA and other institutions. Over the years, the college educated international leaders from all over the world and sent many of its graduates to work overseas. The establishment of the International Center was achieved under Dr. Attallah A. Kidess’s guidance and initiative. In 1965, with a gift of $15,000 from Olive Doggett, President Laurence Locke Doggett’s wife, he dedicated the new International Center in a ceremony in Carlisle Foyer of Alumni Hall. The International Center facilitates international education programs, helps international students and visiting scholars, promotes the college internationally, and helps to internationalize the Springfield College campus.

HISTORICAL NOTE Internationalism has been an important characteristic of Springfield College since the very beginning of the school in 1885. As the 20th century progressed, international education, administration, and foreign student advisors were badly needed at the college due to increasing foreign student enrollment and expanding overseas programs. As such, largely through the efforts of Dr. Attallah A. Kidess, the functions and roles of the International Center were approved by the Board of Trustees, and the center was officially established in 1965.

Before the International Center was established, there were many international programs conducted at the college, and connections with other countries were extensive. This was due to the strong tie that existed between Springfield College and the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA). Over the years, the college educated international YMCA leaders from all over the world and sent many of its graduates to work overseas. This international influence was reflected in the changing names of the College, known at various times as the International YMCA Training School and the International YMCA College1.

During these early years, several faculty members, including professor Frank M. Mohler, Dr. Theodore A. Wiel, and Dr. Attallah A. Kidess, worked with and played an important role in guiding international students and programs. Professor Mohler was the Director of the Department of International Service at the College. In 1928 he was appointed to direct the Cosmopolitan Club. Established in 1921, the Cosmopolitan Club acted as a home away from home for international students and facilitated a supportive international atmosphere on campus. In addition to these duties, professor Mohler also acted as advisor to all foreign students, including the students at the newly formed YMCA School of Physical Education in Geneva. In 1947 Dr. Theodore Wiel followed Professor Mohler as the director of the Cosmopolitan Club. After the Second World War, there was a huge increase in international students, with many students coming from Europe. He was assisted during this period by long-time college supporter, Mrs. Margaret Wood. Dr. Attallah A. Kidess was originally an international student, graduating in 1935. After 12 years of service in the Jerusalem YMCA, he returned as a faculty member in 1948. Kidess was named Foreign Student Advisor in 1955, a position he held until he was appointed the first director of International Center officially in 1965.

The establishment of the International Center was achieved under Dr. Kidess’s guidance and initiative. In a letter from Dr. Kiddess to Dean Cummins E. Speakman on October 7, 1963, he underscored the need to have two rooms, one for him and one for the secretary2. In 1965, with a gift of $ 15,000 from Olive Doggett, President Laurence Locke Doggett’s wife, he dedicated the new International Center in a ceremony in Carlisle Foyer of Alumni Hall3. The center had a suite

In November 18, 1972, the center was officially named the Lawrence Doggett International Center and moved to the second floor of the Marsh Memorial Building.

Dr. Kidess was the Director of the International center until 1980 when he was replaced by Dr. Frank Fu, who had been the International Student Advisor since 1978. One of his contributions was to build connections with East Asia and South America. During his time, the first official cooperation agreement with a Chinese institute, the Beijing Sport University, was signed. This agreement was signed in 1981. Also, under the leadership of the Hong Kong Chinese YMCA and Dr. Fu, the International Academy was established in 1982. The International Academy was designed to help international students get an education in the , by providing cultural, language, and academic programs mainly to students from East Asia.

Dr. Kenneth Wall became the director of the International Center in 1983. Dr. Wall continued to extend international outreach and many study abroad programs were set up for Springfield students and international students, visiting scholars, and coaches coming to the college. Dr. Wall also continued to promote the college’s international influence in Asia, South America, and Europe. From the summer of 1999 to the spring 2003, Dr. Richard Yam was the Acting Director of the International Center, while Dr. Ken Wall was away for International activities. Also during this period, the International Center moved multiple times, including to the Conference & Special Events building (# 500 Alden Street) and the Admissions Building in 1989 and the bottom floor of the Admissions Building in 1992.

In 2004, Professor Deborah Alm became the Interim Director until she was appointed the Director in 2005. Professor Alm came the college as an instructor of the English as Second Language Program in 1993. Under her tenure, the International Center moved to the new Richard B. Historical Note Dr. Henry Hsu was a trustee of the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong around 1982- 1985. Charlie Smith knew him via these YMCA connections in Hong Kong. In 1994, following the recommendations of Charlies Smith, Springfield College President Randolph Bromery contacted Dr. Henry Hsu, who was a member of the International Olympic Committee and a leader of the Taiwan Olympic Movement. At the time, Dr. Hsu recognized the need for coaches and sport trainers and was working to establish this at the National College of Physical Education and Sport in Taiwan. In recognition of this pursuit, and in the burgeoning relationship with the college, Dr. Hsu was conferred an honorable doctoral degree from Springfield College on May 1995. In 1997, Dr. Hsu established the Henry Hsu fund at Springfield College to enable Taiwan scholars and coaches to do exchange studies at Springfield College. When Dr. Hsu passed away in 2009, the program was put on hold until 2016, when the Hsu family authorized to react the program and to transform the fund into the Henry H. Hsu Scholar Program. The first two scholars from Taiwan were scheduled to arrive at Springfield in spring 2018.

Historical Note

Lingnan (University) College was founded as Canton Christian College by American missionaries in Guangzhou, province, (Canton, Kwangtung Province), China, in 1888. The college relocated to in 1903, changed the as Lingnan School, and then moved back to Guangzhou in 1904. In 1906, Josiah McCracken, University of School of Medicine graduate, was sent to the school. The school was renamed “the University Medical School in Canton, China,” in 1907.

After the Christian Association ended the affiliation with the Canton Christian College, and McCracken moved to St. John’s University in Shanghai in 1913, the university changed its Chinese name to Lingnan University again in 1916. Both the Chinese and the English name were changed to Lingnan University in 1927. At this time, Dr. Chung Wing Kwong became the first Chinese principal of the University, heralding the Chinese takeover of the management and administration of the University. Due to the Second World War, the university opened a school in Hong Kong and Shaoguang (a city in north of Guangdong province). The University moved back to Guangzhou in 1945.

Sun Yat-sen University, also Zhongshan (Mandarin) University or Chung Shan University, was founded in 1924 by the leadership of Sun Yat-sen. The university was originally named Guangdong University, and then renamed National Sun Yat-sen University to commemorate Dr. Sun Yat- sen’s contribution to the Chinese revolution. In 1927, the university was named the National No. 1 Sun Yat-Sen University (at that time there were eight universities called Sun Yat-Sen University in the country). In 1928, the university was renamed the National Sun Yat-Sen University. In 1935, the university established a Graduate School. Because of the Second World War, the University moved to Shaoguan. It reopened in Guangzhou in 1945.

Following a national wide adjustment in Chinese university education, academic departments of Sun Yat-sen University and Lingnan University relocated and merged to form a new Sun Yat-sen University in 1952. In 1987, The Chinese Education Committee restored Lingnan University as Lingnan (University) College within the system of Sun Yat-Sen University.

Sun Yat-Sen University used the name “Zhongshan University (ZSU)” in the 1990s. Sun Yat-Sen University again became in common use after the university incorporated with Sun Yat-Sen Medical University in 2001.

The relationship between Springfield College, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), and Lingnan (University) College begins when Charlie Smith traveled to Hong Kong and met C.S. Lam (1970 Springfield College Honorary degree recipient), President of the Board of Chinese YMCA in Hong Kong, and James Wu (also a Springfield College Honorary degree recipient), trustee of the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong and Lingnan College in Guangzhou ca. 1982. It is from these connections that when Smith visits Lingnan College and Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou for the first time in 1991, he was accompanied by Dr. James Wu. Here he knows Dr. Henry Ying-Tung Fok, a professional athlete (tennis and soccer), a life-long supporter of Sport, and a committee member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The two men are introduced by Dr. Fok’s “friend, business partner, and SYSU alumni,” Dr. James Wu. From their meeting, they propose a program to send coaches and physical education leaders for training in Springfield College. At the time, Dr. Fok had been promoting Chinese Olympic movement and was dedicated to promoting physical education and sport across the country. One of his main goals was to prepare China for the upcoming Olympics.

On January 31, 1994, Springfield College President Randolph W. Bromery conferred an honorary degree of Doctor of Humanics to Dr. Fok. The ceremony was held in Hong Kong. After Fok privately visited SC on July 16, 1994, the Fok Physical Education and Sport Foundation, a specific foundation to establish educational opportunities between Springfield College and Sun Yat-sen University, was established at Springfield College with a donation from Dr. Fok in August 1994. Finally, the cooperative agreement of “Fok Physical Education and Sport Exchange Program” between SYSU and SC was first signed in SYSU main campus under the support from the Fok Foundation on March 18, 1996. The second, third, and fourth agreement were signed in 2002, 2005, and 2013.

Arrangement There is no set arrangement within this series. Materials have initially been arranged chronological, but newer materials have been and will be added at the back of the box that best matches the date of the material.

All materials are identified by the person or organization and what types of materials are contained within.

Historical Note: Following the Student Volunteer Movement for Foreign Missions (1886-1891) and the world YMCA movement in the early 20th century in China, Chinese students from Chinese YMCAs were sent to study and train at Springfield College (at the time the International YMCA College). The students that came had a great influence on Chinese physical education and sport. They included people such as John Ma (Ma Yuehan), a leader of Chinese modern physical education and sports, and Dong Shouyi, the pioneer of developing Chinese basketball.

After the Second World War (1937-1945), the China-US relationship declined. This begun with the Civil War in mainland China (1945-1949), and continued through the establishment of the People’s Republic of China (1949), the Korean War (1950-1953), and the escalation of the Cold War (1954-1991). As a result, Chinese students from the Chinese mainland rarely came to Springfield College.

In 1971, China restored its official seat in the United Nations. Starting with the “Ping Pong diplomacy” in 1971 and 1972, a series of the sport diplomacy and culture exchange activities were held to promote the China-US relationship during the Nixon administration. One of the landmarks of this sport diplomacy was an exchange led by Mou Zouyun, Class of 1947. In November 1978, Mou led the Chinese Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams to visit and play against American college basketball (represented in folder 1). The United State finalized changed its diplomatic recognition to recognize the People’s Republic of China in January 1979.

Additional signs of these changes are represented in this sub-series. They include in 1978-1979 visit of three Chinese coaches: Chen Yunpeng, Chen Gongcheng, and Zhou Yixian, from the All-China Sport Federation of People’s Republic of China. They came in November 1978 to train in Springfield College via the operation of National Committee on US-China Relations. Also, there was the 1980 visit of Jiang Nanxiang, the Chinese Minister of Education. He visited Springfield College (see folder 2 & 9). The visit was sponsored by the United States Department of Education and managed by the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations.

Scope and Content Series 6: Asia, Sub-series a: China (Mainland) contains correspondence, brochures, pamphlets, memos, newspapers, photographs, and other miscellaneous materials. Most of this material comes from late 1970s through the late 20th century. The materials involve trips, contacts, and relationships with institutions and people on Mainland China. This includes correspondence with Chinese Springfield College Alumni, institutions, coaches, educational administrators, embassies, sports team, and the YMCA in China.

Most of the material is correspondence. This correspondence focuses mainly on the connections between Springfield College and Chinese higher education institutions involved in physical education and sport. Some important instances include letters from National Committee U.S. Relations with the Peoples Republic of China inquiring whether Springfield College could accept three Chinese coaches at the College in 1978. This was the first group of Chinese staff members who were officially sent for training in the United States since the Peoples Republic of China was established. There are materials on the visit of Jiang Nanxiang, the Minister of Education of China, to Springfield College in 1980, including some correspondence from him, the college’s responses, and copies of an article about the visit as well as his itinerary and delegation list for the trip. Correspondence on early visit to the US by Mou Zouyun, the head coach of National Basketball Team of China, in 1978. This includes a letter with Springfield College Basketball coach Dr. Edward Steitz. There is also some correspondence about Springfield College alumni that dedicated in sport fields including the correspondence regarding Mou Zouyun family and “Springfield College alumni in the FIVB (International Federation)” from Ma Qiwei.

Of interest is an announcement of “China Alert” from the NASPA (National Association of Student Personnel Administrators) responded to the changes of Chinese social atmosphere and clarified that the Bush administration decided to delay enforcement of visa departure deadlines and encouraged American colleges or universities to help Chinese students in 1989 during and after the protests at Tiananmen Square. Another article of interest is Coach Charles Smith response to “Swimming World and Junior Swimmer” magazine in support of Chinese coaches and their players who were suspected of doping in 1993.

Finally, there is correspondence of a trip to the Tianjin YMCA Conference and Beijing Sports University in 2007 by Springfield College president Richard B. Flynn.

Historical Note:

After First Opium War (1839-1842), the Chinese Qing government was forced by the British to sign a series of treaties; the first treaty was to cede the Hong Kong Island in 1842. Since that time Hong Kong was ruled and organized under British rules. This continued to 1997, excluding Japanese occupation from 1941-1945. Due to this, the link between Springfield College and the Hong Kong YMCA was uninterrupted.

The Hong Kong YMCA movement like the Chinese YMCA movement started in early 1890s. The Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong was established in 1901. Over the years, Springfield College has had deep connections with Hong Kong, mainly through its alumni. Starting the in the 1970s there was a reinvigoration of this relationship. Beginning in 1970, Dr. S.C. Lam, who was a leader of the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong, received an Honorary Doctor degree from Springfield College because of his dedication in the YMCA movement in Hong Kong. Also, Charles Smith, a global ambassador of Springfield College, met James Wu, a trustee of the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong at that time, during his first Asian trip in Hong Kong ca. 1982. Another critical link came from Dr. Frank Fu, who was the Director of the International Center from 1978-1983. After he left Springfield College in 1983, he went to the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 1992, he moved to Baptist University of Hong Kong. Many connections were made from these three connections that are reflected in this series.

Historical Note: After China lost the First Sino- Japanese War, 1984-1895, Japan forced the Qing Government of China to sign the Treaty of Shimonoseki (April 17, 1895) that ceded Taiwan and other Chinese territories to Japan. Taiwan was colonized under Japanese rule from 1895 to 1945. The Republic of Formosa (literally Taiwan Democratic State), a short-lived republic, was established to resist the colonization on May 1895, however, it was extinguished in October.

Sun Yat-sen led the Xinhai Revolution to overthrow the Qing Dynasty and co- founded the (Nationalist Party of China) to establish the Republic of China in 1912. After the Second World War, China took over the Island of Taiwan (1945). Later, the hostility between the Kuomintang Party and the Communist Party of China became open civil war. As a result, the People's Republic of China was established in mainland China in October 1949, but the Kuomintang Party declined to surrender, and the military forces under Chiang Kai-shek, the leader of the Kuomintang Party at that time, went to the island of Taiwan in 1949. There were Individuals or non-official interactions between the China mainland and Taiwan even though most of the political connections were cutoff since 1950s.

In 1971, the United Nation General Assembly Resolution 2758 was passed stating that the People’s Republic of China as the only legitimate representative of China to the United Nations” and expelled the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek of the Republic of China in 1971. Taiwan region is still regarded by China as being under the Republic of China rule until today, although Taiwan considers itself to be independent.
