SAN DIEGO M.A., CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY M.Ed., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUESTTS AMHERST Ph.D., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Directed by: Professor Robert Colbert This dissertation articulates the theoretical and pragmatic foundations of a rhetorical approach to psychotherapy; an approach, that is, which is informed by the worldview, concerns, and methodologies of the discipline of rhetoric. Rlietoric—which originated in ancient Greece—long predates psychotherapy in aiming to understand the workings of influence or persuasion, both as it occurs between persons and within persons (i.e., self-persuasion). Persuasion is of critical importance to psychotherapy not only because it is instrumental in producing change in clients, but because it is an ongoing facet of everyday life, accounting for a substantial portion of why persons behave as they do. Despite the apparent commonalities between rhetoric and psychotherapy, the literature on psychotherapy contains few references to—and fewer substantive explorations of—rhetorical works, concepts, rhetoric and strategies. Secondly, this dissertation demonstrates how rhetorical insights and procedures can help psychotherapists meet the daily, pragmatic demands of doing psychotherapy. Accordingly, this dissertation culminates in a structured, clinically-oriented description of how psychotherapy may be carried out according to rhetorical principles. The model for psychotherapy proposed here is intended to enable clinicians to envision a rhetorical framework or logic for psychotherapy cases, as well as to engage clients in (a) symptom-relieving rhetorical exchanges and (b) the work of developing greater rhetorical (self)understanding and proficiency. In articulating a model for psychotherapy, emphasis is placed on the role of argumentation, both as it is practiced by clients and by therapists. It is suggested that the fundamental mechanism of healing—that is, the essential occurrence to which therapeutic effects are due— is carefully constructed, psycho-socially apt, symptom-targeted argumentation. Although rhetoric has been defined in many and diverse ways, a useful, functional definition has been offered by Sarbin (1995): ^'Rlietoric is the disciplined use of oral and gestural actions for the purpose of persuading others (and self) of the credibility of the speaker's position" (p. 2 1 6) A more expansive definition by Bryant (1965) assigns ^\..to rhetoric a four-fold status": So far as it is concerned with the management of discourse in specific situations for practical purposes, it is an instrumental discipline. It is a literary study, involving linguistics, critical theory, and semantics as it touches the art of informing ideas, and the functioning of language. It is a philosophical study so far as it is concerned with a method of investigation or inquiry. And finally, as it is akin to politics, drawing upon psychology and sociology, rhetoric is a social study, the study of a major force in the behavior of men (sic) in society (p. 36). [italics inserted] Because an understanding of rhetorical theory is considered an important basis for utilizing rhetorical strategies in psychotherapeutic practice, a substantial discussion of rhetorical theories and principles is offered, especially in the initial chapters of this dissertation. In effect, these chapters offer what might be described as an outline of a rhetorical psychology, which is to say a rhetorical perspective upon human psychological functioning. Sources of special Perelman importance in developing this perspective include works by Aristotle (1991), Chaim Grootendorst (1963, 1969, 1982), Kenneth Burke (1931, 1955, 1966, 1989), van Eemeren and (1996), and others. 1 Paired with its concern with theory, this dissertation is committed to showing that rhetorical insights and procedures can help psychotherapists meet the daily, pragmatic demands of doing psychotherapy. Accordingly, this dissertation culminates in a structured, clinically- oriented description of how psychotherapy may be carried out according to rhetorical principles. Our analysis identified several issues raised by students when rating teachers poorly, which adds to the literature that defines “bad teachers” from the student perspective. We also identify the language students used to describe these issues and notice a clear distinction between the language used to address teaching-related complaints and behavior perceived as unfit for teachers. We argue that digital forums can be valuable tools for schools and conclude with suggestions and examples of the type of policies that may be derived from this type of analysis of a digital forum for students. Broman, Advisor In their book Ten Little Title Tunes: Towards a Musicology of the Mass Media, Philip Tagg and Bob Clarida build on Tagg’s previous efforts to define the musical affect of popular music. By breaking down a musical example into minimal units of musical meaning (called musemes), and comparing those units to other musical examples possessing sociomusical connotations, Tagg demonstrated a transfer of musical affect from the music possessing sociomusical connotations to the object of analysis. While Tagg’s studies have focused mostly on television music, this document expands his techniques in an attempt to analyze the musical affect of Howard Shore’s score to Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. This thesis studies the ability of Shore’s film score not only to accompany the events occurring on-screen, but also to provide the audience with cultural and emotional information pertinent to character and story development. After a brief discussion of J.R.R. Tolkien’s description of the cultures, poetry, and music traits of the inhabitants found in Middle-earth, this document dissects the thematic material of Shore’s film score.

Cloud to describe "a set of political and cultural discourses that have adopted psychotherapy's lexicon—the conservative language of healing, coping, adaptation, and restoration of previously existing order—but in contexts of social and political conflict". Constructing the Self argued that the rhetoric of therapy encourages people to focus on themselves and their private lives rather than attempt to reform flawed systems of social and political power. This form of persuasion is primarily used by politicians, managers, journalists and entertainers as a way to cope with the crisis of the American Dream. The rhetoric of therapy has two functions, according to Cloud: 1 to exhort conformity with the prevailing social order and 2 to encourage identification Constructing the Self therapeutic values: individualismfamilism, self-helpand self- absorption. The origins of therapeutic discourse, along with advertising and other consumerist cultural forms, emerged during the industrialization of the West during the 18th century. The new emphasis on the acquisition of wealth during this period produced discourse about the "democratic self- determination of individuals conceived as autonomous, self-expressive, self-reliant subjects" or, in short, the " self-made man ". Therefore, the language of personal responsibility, adaptation, and healing served not to liberate the working class, the poor, and the socially marginalized, but to persuade members of these classes that they are individually responsible for their plight.

This thesis traces the history of rhetoric and psychology theory, focusing on the parallel theories of Nienkamp’s internal rhetoric and Herman’s dialogical self. Both theories model the human mind as having multiple psyches that actively interact to interpret human experience and project human behavior. I conclude with a case study of anorexic patients using ethos, pathos, and logos in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), arguing that principles of rhetoric can help patients with mental disorders cognitively realign their thinking more effectively than drug treatments can.

One of the main reasons why audiovisual translation is so complex is that it requires interdisciplinary knowledge. Being fluent in the source and target language is not enough anymore, Translation Studies must open up to Communication Studies, Media and Film Studies, Cultural Studies, as well as to Semiotics, Sociology, Anthropology” (Gambier and Gottlieb xii), and possibly other disciplines, in order to provide a sufficient translation that does not lose the entertaining value of the source text, within the new environment of the target language. The following analysis investigates the balance between translating cultural and linguistic aspects, and their effects on humor retention in the target text. Therefore, the first part of this thesis provides an overview of translation theory, and in particular humor translation, and translation of culture-bound references. In the next part, I analyze a selection of dubbing examples from the fourth season of Friends, divided into intra-linguistic culture-bound references and extra-linguistic culture-bound references. After comparing those results, my final claim is that giving precedence to the translation of stylistic devices over cultural references, often results in loss of humor, context, and sometimes even sense.
