Rebecca Troeger From Image to Image Maker: Contemporary Irish Women Poets and the National Tradition • The Irish literary tradition has always been inextricably bound with the idea of image-making. Because of ueland's historical status as a colony, and of Irish people's status as dispossessed of their land, it has been a crucial necessity for Irish writers to establish a sense of unique national identity. Education Policy Analysis Archives, 29(79). https://doi.org/10.14507/epaa.29.6289 Abstract: In this paper we used natural language processing to review hundreds of thousands of negative student reviews of their teachers submitted to the website RateMyTeacher.com. Our analysis identified several issues raised by students when rating teachers poorly, which adds to the literature that defines “bad teachers” from the student perspective. We also identify the language students used to describe these issues and notice a clear distinction between the language used to address teaching-related complaints and behavior perceived as unfit for teachers. We argue that digital forums can be valuable tools for schools and conclude with suggestions and examples of the type of policies that may be derived from this type of analysis of a digital forum for students. COMPTES RENDUS BOOK REVIEWS Gerald Dawe, The Wrong Country: Essays on Modern Irish Writing, Newbridge, Irish Academic Press, 2018, 294 p. The title of Gerald Dawe’s new collection of essays on modern Irish writing is taken from Hugo Hamilton’s famous novel, The Speckled People. Dawe opens his book by quoting “You can’t be afraid of saying the opposite, even if you look like a fool and everybody thinks you’re in the wrong country, speaking the wrong language” (p. vi). This opening sentence is a relevant guide to Dawe’s essays, in which the TCD professor Emeritus tries to lead a quiet combat to conjure up forgotten authors (such as Joseph Campbell, George Reavey, or Ethna Carbery) and bring a diversity of perspectives on more renowned Irish writers of the last two centuries. -
Women Writers of the Troubles
Women Writers of The Troubles Britta Olinder, University of Gothenburg Abstract During the thirty years of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, writing by women was difficult to find, especially concerning the conflict and its violence. The publication of the first three heavy volumes of The Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing towards the end of that period demonstrated the blindness of its male editors to female writing, leading to another two volumes focusing on women and also presenting more than expected on the conflict itself. Through looking at a selection of prose, poretry and drama written by women, this article wishes to illuminate a number of relevant issues such as: How have female writers reacted to the hate and violence, the social and political insecurity in their writing of poetry, plays and fiction? Is Robert Graecen’s question ‘Does violence stimulate creativity?’—in a letter to the Irish Times (18 Jun. 1974)—relevant also for women? In this very partial exploration, I have chosen to discuss a novel by Jennifer Johnston (Shadows on Our Skin, 1977) and one by Deirdre Madden (One by One in the Darkness, 1996), a well-known short story by Mary Beckett (‘A Belfast Woman,’ 1980), together with plays by Anne Devlin (Ourselves Alone, 1986) and Christina Reid (Tea in a China Cup, 1987), as well as poetry, by, among others, Meta Mayne Reid, Eleanor Murray, Fleur Adcock and Sinéad Morrissey. AllenRandolph: Interview: Michael Longley and Jody Allen Randolph Interview: Michael Longley and Jody AllenRandolph You are variously described as a nature poet, a love poet, a classical poet, a war poet, a political poet. Do any of these tags feel closer to home than others? I don't care for pigeonholing. I hope there are overlappings, the nature poetry fertilizing the war poetry, and so on. Advancing on a number of fronts at the same time looks like a good idea: if there's a freeze-up at points along the line, you can trickle forward somewhere else. Love poetry is at the core of the enterprise-the hub of the wheel from which the other preoccupations radiate like spokes. In my next collection Snow Water there will be eleven new love poems. I wouldn't mind being remembered as a love poet, a sexagenarian love poet. I occasionally write poems about war-as a non-combatant. Only the soldier poets I revere such as Wilfred Owen and Keith Douglas produce what I would call proper war poetry. It's presun1ptuouS to call oneself a poet. -

Thurston: "A Deliberate Collection of Cross Purposes": Eavan Boland's Poeti 1/A Deliberate Collection of Cross Purposes": Eavan Boland's Poetic Sequences by MICHAEL THURSTON EGINNING IN THE EARLY 1980s, Eavan Boland began to work not only in Bindividual lyrics but in slightly longer poems ("The Journey") and sequences of lyrics (including the poems gathered in In Her Own Image). Indeed, since the 1990 American appearance of Outside History: Selected Poems 1980-1990, each of Boland's books has included at least one such sequence (Outside History included two, the title sequence and also "Domestic Interior," which consisted of poems originally published as free standing lyrics, first gathered into a titled sequence in this American publica tion). While they share the central concerns that have structured Boland's career, each sequence focuses its meditation through a different thematic lens. "Domestic Interior" elaborates and problematizes its titular familial spaces as a haven from history; "Outside History" develops, questions, and finally rejects the possibility of finding and inhabiting any space "outside his tory" and explores the kinds of spaces available within the history the poet ultimately chooses; "Writing in a Time of Violence" takes up language itself and the role of representation in the construction of history and the subject's response to it; and "Colony," from Boland's most recent collection, The Lost Land, meditates on such public repositories of historic residues as cityscapes and monuments. -

Broman, Advisor In their book Ten Little Title Tunes: Towards a Musicology of the Mass Media, Philip Tagg and Bob Clarida build on Tagg’s previous efforts to define the musical affect of popular music. By breaking down a musical example into minimal units of musical meaning (called musemes), and comparing those units to other musical examples possessing sociomusical connotations, Tagg demonstrated a transfer of musical affect from the music possessing sociomusical connotations to the object of analysis. While Tagg’s studies have focused mostly on television music, this document expands his techniques in an attempt to analyze the musical affect of Howard Shore’s score to Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. This thesis studies the ability of Shore’s film score not only to accompany the events occurring on-screen, but also to provide the audience with cultural and emotional information pertinent to character and story development. After a brief discussion of J.R.R. Tolkien’s description of the cultures, poetry, and music traits of the inhabitants found in Middle-earth, this document dissects the thematic material of Shore’s film score. -

Nature has always played a major part in Michael Longley’s poetry, for ecological reasons but also because of the feeling of empathy involved, as Snow Water published in 2004 testifies. This analysis will rely essentially on Gaston Bachelard’s phenomenological approach which deals with the way human reverie on matter governs poetic writing as the sensitory experience of the world. Ganim, Chairperson The supernatural, broadly defined as magic, marvels, wonders, and miracles, might at first seem to be wholly separate from material goods and the cultural practices surrounding material objects; miracles occur solely through divine grace, and magic would logically seem to involve making things happen without using physical force. Yet, in the depiction of the supernatural in medieval texts, miracles, marvels, wonders, and magic all depend in some way or another upon material goods. At the same time, the supernatural has a recursive effect upon materiality in the texts in this study; it functions as an amplifier of signification.
