Pope St. Gregory the Great 540, 590-603. Feast Day September 3.

Do we have it bad right now?

By the time Gregory became , was a backwater. It had not been the capital of the Roman Empire since about 330. Around AD 335, Rome had 28 libraries. None of them existed when Gregory was elected in 590. Why? The sacked Rome in 410. became the capital of the West, which was more easily protected and had a better port. Attila the Hun sacked Rome twice, but Pope Leo the Great stopped him once in 452. Roaming barbarians conducted total war and pillaging, which brought plagues and . The was worse. The capture Rome in 546 and then abandoned the city, taking the remainder of the population with him further south on the peninsula. Rome was empty for 40 days. The Roman general, , garrisoned the city but Goths return to take city again. crossed over the alps in 568 and ravaged central . Northern and western Italy was a wasteland. It had been bled white. THEN, in 589, floods devasted Italy. The Tiber overflowed its banks; the granaries of the Church were destroyed; pestilence was widespread, and Rome became the city of the dead. There was no commerce and mass burials were common.

That was what Pope Gregory the Great inherited. For the age he lived, Gregory was well educated. He served as prefect of Rome in 573, but resigned from this to live as a . During his monastic life, Gregory converted six Sicilian estates into monasteries. He donated his personal land in Rome to create the Monastery of St. Andrew. Though not a Benedictine, he later wrote a biography of St Benedict, which is entitled “The Dialogues.” In the 570s he became an ambassador for the pope to for six years. Due to wars and destruction, he gave his personal wealth to feed poor. He was the ruler of all things in Rome, spiritual and temporal, because nobody else could do it. He titled himself Servus servorum mundi, Servant of the Servants of God.

It is difficult to chew on all of that. With schools opening at all levels, there might be a new outbreak. Everyone has opinions. Pope St. Gregory the Great was GREAT because he held it all together. To receive the title “Great” a pope must be the model Priest (Sacraments), Prophet (proclaimer of the Gospel), and King (governance). Some of his preaching ventured near apocalyptic end-of-times messages. It would be easy to understand that. The Mass must go on. Do we go to Mass? The who have gone before us maintained fidelity to the sacraments, prayer, and helping each other. ‘Hope has been poured into our hearts through the power of the Holy Spirit.’ (Rom 5:5) We can tackle our first world problems because we have the financial means but think of those who do not have hope; even those who live in out town. People we know. We must pray to live the hope of Christ and to seek the Lord’s will for the times in which we live.

I beg pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love Thee. Amen. One of the distinguishing marks of a vibrant parish is its prayer life. Prayer comes first for its individuals, families, and groups dedicated to many ministries. Prayer comes first for its pastor who wants his people to experience "more". All are solidly connected to Christ who leads them to the Father. We are that parish! Witness those who come to daily Mass, answer the call to Adoration, pray so many Rosaries and Chaplets, are attentive to family prayer, and offer their sufferings as a sharing in Christ's Redemption for the sake of others.

We need all of us to come together now for a special mission! DISCOVERING CHRIST will begin new weekly sessions Thursday, September 10, in our parish. We are asking for individuals and families to become Prayer Partners with the participants even before we know who they are! Pray now that those whom Christ is calling to a deeper relationship with Him will be open to His invitation. We will let you choose whom to pray for when the time comes. Please help us get the entire parish praying for an increase in Christ's life!
