The popular New Zealander won all German national titles and a European Cup trophy during his career for Werder Bremen. His reputation as one of the world’s best strikers was confirmed in 1993/1994 when he became top scorer in the UEFA Champions League. Oceania's Player of the Century goal scoring record in the German Supercup still stands today. World famous German coaches Otto Rehhagel and Ottmar Hitzfeld helped him to become a role-model for a whole football generation. In addition to his success on the pitch, Wynton Rufer was a favorite with the fans and renowned as an entertainer. His handstand on the pitch after winning the Champions League fixture v Anderlecht or his story telling on live German TV are still well remembered by his fans. Wynton Rufer was Player/ Coach for NZ's first professional football club the Kingz. His most recent management role was PNG National Coach in 2014. Today his soccer school ‘WYNRS’ based in Auckland has produced many youth and senior national players for NZ. As a current and former member of several FIFA committees, world stars like Pelé, Franz Beckenbauer, Michel Platini, Sir Bobby Charlton, are names associated with Wynton Rufer at the highest levels of international football. This truly ‘Global Player’ was awarded a Companion of the NZ Order of Merit in 2008 by the NZ government.     STREET SOCCER Street soccer, pick-up game, sandlot soccer or a kick-about whatever title you give to the format the idea is to give the game of soccer back to the players. Past generations learned to play the game on their own with other kids in the neighborhood or at school in these kid organized games. Today youth sports are overly adult controlled and influenced. It’s difficult today for youngsters to have a pick-up game since the streets have too many cars, the sandlot now has a mini- mall on it and parents are reluctant, with good cause, to let their child go blocks away from home on Saturday to play in a game on his or her own. Street soccer is a way for soccer clubs to give the game back to the players in the community. Once a week, or whatever frequency fits the circumstances the best, a club can have organized spontaneity. The club will provide the fields and supervision. Adults will be on site for safety and general supervision, but otherwise it is all up to the players to organize the games. The adults should NOT coach, cheer, criticize, referee or in any other way involve themselves in the game. The best bet for parents is to drop off their child, go run some errands, and then come back to pick up your child an hour or two latter. The coaches are on site NOT to coach, but to supervise, be on hand for any serious injuries and any severe discipline problems. Additionally the coaches are there to provide the game equipment and to let the players know when each game segment starts and stops.

    EDUCATION PACK 2019 Activity 1 Matchbox Memories Activity 2 A Living For Northumberland Day 2019, we are running Northumbrian Legend ‘Matchbox Memories’ - an initiative with which we would like to get schools involved. – Sir Bobby Charlton We are inviting schoolchildren to write their favourite memory of Northumberland, so far in their lives, on a plain white matchbox. Alternatively, they could write it on a piece of paper and a teacher could then write on the boxes, as these are quite small. Another option is for children to take a matchbox home and collect a matchbox memory from a parent, or elderly family member. In this way, they can take part in an oral history exercise. We then wish to collect the memory boxes and put as many as possible on display. The children can add their name, or the name of the person who has given them their special memory, if they wish. We have a limited number of matchbox memory boxes available, but they can be bought at Amazon, if needs be. We could also possibly partner a school with a local sponsor, if we can find one for you. We’d love to have pictures of children working on their matchbox memories, or all holding one aloft for a photo. We will try to arrange for certain collection points, if you take part. This is a very special way to being generations together and find out what people have found special about Northumberland, past and present. We hope you have fun with it. One of the most famous Northumbrians alive today is a footballing legend and one of the few Englishmen to have won the World Cup football trophy.

Milby 2006 ABSTRACT Soccer playing style has not been addressed in detail in the academic literature, as playing style has often been dismissed as the aesthetic element of the game. Brief mention of playing style is considered when discussing national identity and gender. Through a literature research methodology and detailed study of game situations, this dissertation addresses a definitive definition of playing style and details the cultural elements that influence it. A case study analysis of German and Brazilian soccer exemplifies how cultural elements shape, influence, and intersect with playing style. Eight signature elements of playing style are determined: tactics, technique, body image, concept of soccer, values, tradition, ecological and a miscellaneous category. Each of these elements is then extrapolated for Germany and Brazil, setting up a comparative binary. Literature analysis further reinforces this contrasting comparison. Both history of the country and the sport history of the country are necessary determinants when considering style, as style must be historically situated when being discussed in order to avoid stereotypification. Historic time lines of significant German and Brazilian style changes are determined and interpretated.
