7 UN CENTRE DE RECHERCHE A MONT-JOLI

L'honorable Pierre De Bane, ministre des Peches et Oceans, a annonce en mai l'etablissement dans la region de Mont-Joli d'un institut de recherche de classe internationale dans le domaine des sciences de la mer. Un montant de 20 millions de dollars sera affecte a la construction de cet institut dont le programme de recherche portera sur les ressources halieutiques, leur evalua- tion, l'aquiculture, la mise en valeur des ressources, l'etablissement de cartes hydrographiques, l'oceano- graphie et l'ecologie marine. Remi Bujold, Member of Parlia- ment for Bonaventure—Magdalen Islands, announced in mid-May that important work projects for harbour development will be undertaken shortly at Gascons, Saint Godefroi and Bonaventure. At Saint Godefroi, a new breakwater will be built, along with other improvements made to the dock. These works are estimated at $1.5 million and include the installation of new equipment for the unloading systems of fish catches. At Gascons, the principal work plans are for dredging of the harbour, construction of a perimeter dock and installation of new unloading systems equipment, the overall costs totalling some $1.2 million. This work is expected to begin within the next few weeks. A look at the Gascons harbour, where improvements worth $1.2 million are planned. 6 FURTHER IMPROVEMENTS TO THE PORT OF MATANE

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans recently announced the approval of $1.9 million in funding for the upcoming construction of a landing wharf and dredging operations at the port of Matane. The new funding, announced under the Canada/Gaspe/Lower St.Lawrence Economic Develop- ment Plan, brings to $3.1 million the resources allocated by the Canadian government for improvements to the fishing port of Matane. Fisheries and Oceans Minister Pierre De Bane announced in May that a world-class institute for marine science and fisheries research is to be set up in the Mont Joli area. Twenty million dollars will be spent to build the institute, whose research program will focus on fisheries resources, resource assessment, aquaculture, resource development, the preparation of hydrographic charts, oceanography and marine ecology. Fisheries and Oceans Minister Pierre De Bane, in company with the MP for Gaspe, Mr Alexandre Cyr, has announced the development of a new harbour at Cap Chat to support the present rapid expansion in the local fishing industry.

The first phase of the construction of the new harbour, whose total cost is estimated at $3.2 million, is part of the Canada/Gaspe/Lower St.Lawrence Economic Develop- ment Plan launched at Matane in early May by federal ministers Pierre De Bane, Marc Lalonde and Herb Gray.

"In recent years," Mr De Bane stated, "the fleet operating from the Cap Chat wharf has undergone significant development in terms of the number and size of its vessels. In addition, the present harbour facilities located at the entrance to the river are no longer appropriate. Given these circumstances, the construction of a new harbour has become a necessity."

The present harbour located at the mouth of the Cap Chat River has problems with silting. It is therefore necessary to relocate the services outside the river. At Cap aux Meules on 24 April, the Government of Canada announced the allocation of $5.6 million to the Magdalen Islands for Phase II of the federal Magdalen Islands Economic Development Program. The official announcement was made by Hon Donald Johnston, Minister of State for Economic Development and Science and Technology. Mr John- ston was accompanied by the Member of Parliament for Bona- venture—Magdalen Islands, Mr Remi Bujold, who chaired the local advisory committee in charge of community participation in the development program. These funds will be devoted to fisheries, tourism, agriculture and initiatives for economic development. Implementation of Phase II brings to nearly $20 million the contribution of federal government departments to the Magdalen Islands development program, which was inaugurated on 1 April 1981.
