Millet Oppidum English
Château de Millet just situated outside the town of Eauze in the Gers. Devoted to mixed farming and the production of Armagnac, the estate today has 50 hectares of vines for the production of Côtes de Gascogne wines « Domaine de Millet ». The vines enjoy a north westernly position on the green hills of Eauze where the soil alternates between clay limestone and the sandy soils known as 'sables fauves'. Francis Dèche, the proprietor, who follows in the footsteps of five generations has a policy of quality : traditional grape varieties, vineyard cultivation with respect to the environment and constant development in the methods and means of vinification. With his daughter Laurence, who joined him in 1999, they sell a full and varied range that are just waiting to be discovered ! At Millet, the land and its relief tells a story of the history of man . The ruins of a pre-roman oppidum, the currencies and the amphoras discovered near to the vineyard are witnesses of the past. Before building the town of st Elusa in the 1 Century of this era, known today as Eauze, the Elusate people that lived here, learnt how to cultivate vines and appreciate wine from the Romans. OPPIDUM 2007 50% chardonnay, 50% sauvignon The vinification The two grape varieties are vinified separately then blended together and kept in tanks for 6 months. This wine is very original in style with a multitude of nuances that merge to give a surprising floral and spicy flavour . Tasting Notes -White mid dry wine, light in colour with golden yellow highlights -Intense and seductive bouquet with a concentration in floral notes, exotic fruits and soft spice. -

The user has requested enhancement of the downloaded file. 2 SIDONIUS’ P EOPLE Ralph Mathisen 1 Introduction N THE LATE fi fth century, in his ‘Sermon on the saintly martyr Vincent’, bishop Faustus of IRiez (c. 460-90 CE) gave his opinion on the value of being named in a saint’s life: ‘What present-day realm, what transmarine province, however far the Roman Empire or the Christian religion extends, does not rejoice to celebrate the birth of Vincentius? Who today, however, has ever heard even the name of [the praeses] Datianus, unless he has read the passion of Vincent?’1 As far as Faustus was concerned, Datianus’ appearance in a saint’s life would be his only chance for remembrance.2 The same can be said for nearly all of the people who appear in the works of Sidonius Apollinaris. Late antique Gaul was a busy place.3 A lot was happening: the rise of the Christian church as the most signifi cant social and cultural institution; the creation of barbarian kingdoms cou- pled with the fi nal precipitous decline and end of Roman authority; and a social world that was very much in fl ux, as previously unprivileged social groups gained greater opportunities and means of self-expression.4 The 24 poems, and in particular the 147 letters, of Sidonius offer an unparalleled window on the world of late antique Gaul, and provide readers with a wealth of material about the people who populated it.5 Sidonius was well positioned to gather this kind of information. -

The Poet in an Artificial Landscape: Ovid at Falerii Abstract For Ovid, erotic elegy is a quintessentially urban genre. In the Amores, excursions outside the city are infrequent. Distance from the city generally equals distance from the beloved, and so from the life of the lover. This is peculiarly true of Amores, 3.13, a poem that seems to signal the end of Ovid’s career as a literary lover and to predict his future as a poet of rituals and antiquities. For a student of poetry, it is tempting to read the landscape of such a poem as purely symbolic; and I will begin by sketching such a reading. But, as we will see, testing this reading against what can be known about the actual landscape in which the poem is set forces a revision of the results. And this revision is twofold. In the first instance, taking into account certain specific eaturf es of the landscape makes possible the correction of the particular, somewhat limited interpretive hypothesis that a purely literary reading would most probably recommend, and this is valuable in itself. -

This article examines the fourth-century C.E. Ausonius’ descriptions of himself as a nocturnal poet. Interest lies in passages where Ausonius relates that he wrote at night in order to play the part of the modest, self-deprecating author. Past scholarship has generally dismissed Ausonius’ modesty as insincere and empty or stopped at identifying it with the captatio benevolentiae. I will go further in exploring the rhetorical dimensions of Ausonius’ theme. The exami- nation contributes to the study of paratextuality in Latin antiquity and to our understanding of Ausonius’ authorial identity, of the functions he assigns to poetry, of his methods of shaping the reception of his work, and of his literary culture. SOME MANUSCRIPTS OF AUSONIUS When Ferrarius prepared the second edition of Ausonius (Mediol. 1490), his one supplement to the works printed by Girardinus in the first (Ven. 1472) was a text of the Ordo Urbium Nobilium quite unli- ke what stands in modern editions: not only does it omit some sections and alter the order of others, but it presents the long sections on Nar- bonne and Bordeaux incomplete and largely in prose. According to Fer- rarius, Georgius Merula found these excerpta,ashe calls them, in the li- brary of St Eustorgius, Milan. A later hand also added them to T, Leid. Voss. Lat. Q 107 (chart. xv), which editon regard as the best manuscript of the family that produced the ed. Ven. 1472 (l). Hence a rash identi- fication of T with Merula's Eustorgianus (2). ln 1908 Sabbadini showed that at some date before l3l0 Benzo of Alessandria found in the chapter library at Verona a manuscript that contained the Ordo and the Ludus'Septem Sapientum (3). Lo and be- hold, Benzo's quotations from the Ordo agreed with Ferrarius's text, prose and all (4). Hence much discussion of the relationship between the Veronensis and the Eustorgianus (5). The Eustorgianus still exists. Stripping their Spoils: Lesbia and glubit in Catullus 58 The word glubit in Catullus 58 has long been a puzzle. Glubo normally appears in agricultural works, where it describes stripping bark or fleecing sheep. Its use in the last line of poem 58 is the only occurrence outside of Cato and Varro and is unique in Catullus’ corpus: Caeli, Lesbia nostra, Lesbia illa, illa Lesbia, quam Catullus unam plus quam se atque suos amavit omnes, nunc in quadriviis et angiportis glubit magnanimi Remi nepotes. The rarity of the word and its association with Lesbia, described here as a common prostitute, have attracted a lot of attention. Though there is no consensus, interpretations have tended towards either a sexual metaphor or a financial one: according to the first, glubit describes Lesbia pulling back the foreskin, either in masturbation or fellatio (Adams 1982, Jocelyn 1979, Skinner 1991); in the second, the verb describes Lesbia fleecing the aristocracy of their wealth (Muse 2009). But I suggest there may be another association of glubit here that has been overlooked. Spolio also comes from the agricultural sphere and is virtually synonymous with glubo. Indeed the author of the TLL article on glubo uses spolio as a gloss. Unlike glubo, however, spolio is widely attested outside of agricultural texts, where it means to rob or steal or strip off clothing, including the act of stripping an enemy of his armor on the battlefield. New Comedy is especially relevant here, given its influence on Catullan language, characters and scenes (see e.g., Skinner 1971, Nappa 2001, O’Bryhim 2007). -
