A Humdrum star / Gogo Penguin. After the fall / Keith Jarrett.

Fashion companies were quick enough to cut expenditures, pare store openings and lean on suppliers to survive the first year of the recession and the start of the credit crisis. But shifting consumer values and brutal economic realities are forcing both the weak and strong to reconsider their reason for being and how they do business. The paradigm in fashion is shifting. Well- established consumer segments are all changing independently and the industry is scrambling to keep up. The proof is everywhere, from First Lady Michelle Obama’s penchant for J. Notes 50th Anniversary of The Velvet Underground & Nico Nov 16 & 17 I’m often reluctant to spend too much time on things past—then, a time marker shows up: The Velvet Underground & Nico turns 50! As so many bands can attest, it’s the fulfillment of the ultimate dream to record your first album. We were an unfriendly brand, dabbling in a world of challenging lyrics and weird sonics that didn’t fit into anyone’s playlist at the time. Remaining ferociously true to our viewpoints, Lou [Reed] and I never doubted for a moment that we could create something to give a voice to things not regularly explored in rock music at the time. That bizarre combination of four distinctly disparate musicians and a reluctant beauty queen perfectly summed up what it meant to be The Velvet Underground. —John Cale, 2017 To celebrate the 50th birthday of this musical masterpiece Cale decided to perform the album in its entirety only three times.

  • MGMT on Following Your Instincts
February 22, 2018 - As told to Hannah Street Elliott, 2479 words. Tags: Music, Process, Anxiety, Success, Collaboration, Production, Identity. MGMT on following your instincts Do you think albums are getting more difficult to make or easier? Andrew VanWyngarden: It’s pretty much the same… It’s never been that easy. Ben Goldwasser: We’ve always had a pattern of where there would be a year of torturing ourselves and being like, “Oh, we’re never going to make good music ever again.” Then we have a breakthrough at some point; it feels really easy and just comes together. We usually need to give ourselves deadlines and cram at the end. Andrew: I think considering we’ve been making music together and been friends since we were 18, it’s great that we can still work on something for a year and a half and not kill each other. There is still a special, creative spark that happens. It’s not completely dead. Do you think that you’re more confident in your production and writing skills now? Ben: We are definitely more confident in our production skills. We’ve always made a lot of the sounds ourselves, but we weren’t as good at recording things when we started out. Our producer, Dave Fridmann would give us a lot of shit when we’d go into the studio and be like, “How on earth did you make this sound so bad?” [laughs] Andrew: Ben has gotten a lot better at organization. Ben: At organization? Andrew: Yeah. I think that we used to be more equal in the way I still am, where there’ll be, like, 50 folders for one thing.
