My name is Randi Turner and I'm the accessibility and disability rights coordinator with the Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities. Today's focus is visitability, building today's housing for tomorrow. Participants' microphones will be turned off during the session so please make note of the webinar tool bar where you will see the Q&A icon. This is where you will submit questions. Questions will be answered during the session and Susan is going to have to leave us when her piece is done so to make sure she's going to start us out so make sure you submit questions for Susan as they come up during the session and she will answer them when her piece is complete. Citizenship, self-determination and political action: the forging of a political movement Jenny Morris (Talk at Conference in Sydney, Australia on Citizenship and Disability: February 1998) I want to talk about all the three things mentioned in the title of this Conference - citizenship, self-determination and political action. In order to talk about citizenship, I have to explain why I use the term 'disabled people' rather than 'people with disabilities'. The British disabled people's movement has campaigned for people to adopt a social model, rather than a medical model, of disability. The social model of disability says that: • the quality of our lives, our life chances, are not inevitably determined by what our bodies can't do or look like or how our minds function. Like the women's movement, we say - biology is not destiny. If I could not get a job that would be because of discrimination, not because I can't walk or because I'm a woman • we therefore need to separate out 'impairment' - the characteristics of our bodies and minds - from the way other people and society generally react to impairment • prejudice, discrimination, services which disempower and segregate us, a failure to use resources to create accessible environments and technology to aid communication - these are the disabling barriers that we experience • people with physical, sensory, intellectual impairments, people with mental health difficulties are therefore disabled by the society in 1 which we live • and we use the term 'disabled people' to describe what is done to us This language politicises our experiences and it takes the focus away from our impairments being the problem and puts the responsibility onto the society in which we live This is why we don't use the term disability to mean impairment. -

The museum is working with groups, campaigners and individuals to capture their stories and re-examine how the history of disabled people’s activism is presented. We encourage you to let us know if you have any comments, objects or stories you would like to share to help to continue to tell this story. If you are interested in sharing your object or story as part of this project, please speak to a member of staff or contact [email protected] 4 Timeline The timeline on the wall is split into five sections: Early Days, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s. Each section has an introductory label followed by photographs and labels with further information. Beneath the timeline is a shelf with pencils and pieces of card on it that visitors can use to write their own additions to the timeline and leave them on the shelf for other visitors to see. Chen Spring 2015 The Disability Drive © Anna Mollow, 2015. 1 Abstract The Disability Drive by Anna Mollow Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California Berkeley Professor Kent Puckett, Chair This dissertation argues that the psychic force that Freud named “the death drive” would more precisely be termed “the disability drive.” Freud‟s concept of the death drive emerged from his efforts to account for feelings, desires, and actions that seemed not to accord with rational self- interest or the desire for pleasure. Positing that human subjectivity was intrinsically divided against itself, Freud suggested that the ego‟s instincts for pleasure and survival were undermined by a competing component of mental life, which he called the death drive. But the death drive does not primarily refer to biological death, and the term has consequently provoked confusion. By distancing Freud‟s theory from physical death and highlighting its imbrication with disability, I revise this important psychoanalytic concept and reveal its utility to disability studies. While Freud envisaged a human subject that is drawn, despite itself, toward something like death, I propose that this “something” can productively be understood as disability. -

Milestones of the Disability Rights Movement Over the Years The Center for Students with Disabilities is celebrating our 50th year of service at the University of Connecticut. In memorandum of the past 50 years, this timeline was created. The timeline details historical events relating to disability rights and advocacy, as well as major milestones for our Center across the years. Join us in celebrating the history of our Center by taking a virtual walk through various events throughout time that have been influential to our success. 1776 Declaration of Independence signed by Stephen Hopkins Stephen Hopkins, a man with cerebral palsy signs the Declaration of Independence. His historic statement echos, “my hands may tremble, but my heart does not.” 1784 Institution for Blind Children founded in Paris Valentin Huay established the Institution for Blind Children, a facility in Paris aimed at making life more accessible to those who are blind. Huay also discovered that individuals who are blind could read if texts were printed with raised letters. 1800 Treatise on Insanity is Published The first medical classification system of mental disorders created by Phillipe Pinsel in his Treatise on Insanity. His classification system included 4 parts: melancholy, dementia, mania without delirium, and mani without delirium. 1805 Medical Inquiries and Observations Published Father of modern day psychiatry, Dr. Benjamin Rush published Medical Inquiries and Observations, a text aimed at explaining the symptomatology of mental disorders. Louis Braille 1809: Louis Braille is born. He attended the Paris Blind School, founded by Valentin Huay. 1817 Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons Thomas Galludet founded the Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons in Hartford, Connecticut - the first school for the deaf in America. -

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion – Glossary of Terms Ableism- discrimination against persons with mental and/or physical disabilities; social structures that favor able-bodied individuals. (The National Multicultural Institute) Acculturation- the process of learning and incorporating the language, values, beliefs, and behaviors that makes up a distinct culture. This concept is not to be confused with assimilation, where an individual or group may give up certain aspects of its culture in order to adapt to that of the prevailing culture. (The National Multicultural Institute) Affirmative Action- proactive policies and procedures for remedying the effect of past discrimination and ensuring the implementation of equal employment and educational opportunities, for recruiting, hiring, training and promoting women, minorities, people with disabilities and veterans in compliance with the federal requirements enforced by the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP). (Society for Human Resources Management) Ageism- discrimination against individuals because of their age, often based on stereotypes. (The National Multicultural Institute) Ally- a person who takes action against oppression out of a belief that eliminating oppression will benefit members of targeted groups and advantage groups. Allies acknowledge disadvantage and oppression of other groups than their own, take supportive action on their behalf, commit to reducing their own complicity or collusion in oppression of these groups, and invest in strengthening their own knowledge and awareness of oppression. (Center for Assessment and Policy Development) Anti-Oppression - Recognizing and deconstructing the systemic, institutional and personal forms of disempowerment used by certain groups over others; actively challenging the different forms of oppression. (Center for Anti-Oppressive Education) Bias - a positive or negative inclination towards a person, group, or community; can lead to stereotyping. -

Rembis, Ph.D. University at Buffalo Abstract In this article, I offer a brief assessment of the international disability rights and culture movements and disability studies, as well as a commentary on the future of disability and disability studies. A diverse group of activists, artists, and scholars have brought about momentous legal changes in dozens of countries around the world. They have also enabled a critical rearticulation of what it means to be disabled. Yet, this revisioning of disability and this repositioning of disabled people remains fraught. I contend that while movement participants, scholars, and their allies are off to a great start, they have yet to grapple in any serious way with some of the most important and contentious issues within the disability rights and culture movements and disability studies, namely their own internal diversity and the material reality of many disabled peoples’ lives. Despite these complexities, I maintain that the disability rights and culture movements and disability studies have tremendous transformative potential. We are living at a critical moment of history.
