My wife Vicki and I have been Gold Members since we were active in the Wednesday racing scene on our old boat SUNBIRD a few years back. 2 years ago we got a bigger boat, sold the house, and went cruising. We come back each Christmas for a few months, to visit Dux, and the Club and earn a few dollars. It is good to see that Peter has kept Dux as good as, or better than, it used to be, and it is a pleasure to take our overseas friends in for a visit. Christmas 2012-2013 we sailed to Tasmania, and we were under Cape Raoul when Wild Oats came around the corner. There was just us and the helicopter, the rest of the cowards were hiding up the Derwent which was probably a better idea, as we had shredded a screacher and a jib just crossing Storm Bay. We got back from Tassie in February, and it was crossing Bass Strait that inspired us to get a bigger boat. The Seawind 1000 is a tough little boat, but unsuited to comfortable ocean crossings. It is still doing service on the Broadwater, with Darren having given it a nice yellow wrap. Having sold the house and moved onto our 12 year old Belize 43, we set off back down the coast to Sydney, via the Hawkesbury, then back up to the Whitsundays in time for the annual Shaggers rendezvous. During our sojourns we keep meeting the same people and the same boats, and always meeting more. Occasionally they are flying the SYC burgee, more often than not they are SICYC as well. Highlights were the Clarence, Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens. The Hawkesbury and Middle Harbour were also worth a visit or two. Along the way I wrotes articles for various magazines about the places we have been. Last year we finally got the paperwork done, and went offshore with a three month cruise over to New Caledonia. We did the usual cruiser thing and made lots of new friends in Ile des Pines and even got over to the Loyalty Islands for a while. Highlights were Beautemps Beaupre, Ouvea, Kuto and Hanomera Bays, Bai de Gadji, M Be Kou, Bai de Prony and Bai du Nord. We came back via the Chesterfield reef and its magnificent fishing and bird life, got hammered by 40kt winds the last 36 hours as we came under Hexham shoal and inside the Barrier Reef, and cleared in at Mackay. Then it was back to the Whitsundays, Shaggies, Townsville and Zoe Bay. Turning South, we spent some time at Airlie where I completed my Briefers course. If you go up there to charter a boat this year, it may be me that conducts your briefing and training. We got back to the Coast in mid November, where I set about earning some more dollars, antifouling, replacing 2 motors, and of course – earning some more money to pay for it all. We are heading back over towards the end of April, this time heading via New Caledonia to Vanuatu, when we plan on reaching Espiritu Santo before turning back once more in time to be at Shaggers at the end of August. Look forward to seeing you all out there in Yachting land, doing what boats are supposed to be doing. After all, you will never become a better sailor while tied up at the Marina. The amazing fact is that Nyleta was operated by the Harbour Board until the early 80’s, over 55 years, she well and truly paid for herself.

Terry Stephenson has a long history with boating and is a SYC senior member with 39 years active membership. Terry sailed VJ’s (Vaucluse Juniors) in Sydney as a teenager, and has been involved with boats ever since. Terry moved to the Gold Coast in 1968. Terry with a partner set up a jewellery business, Haines and Stephenson in Surfers Paradise. Terry became a member of SYC in 1978 and competed regularly as skipper of his own boat and on other members boats in Nyleta as she was in 1989, abandoned in a vacant lot SYC events. His boats have included “Department S”, a 26 foot Quarter yacht and “Air Supply” a Binks he co-owned with Keith Bow and Gino Moro.

During the 2nd World War, Nyleta was taken over by the Royal Australian Navy as part of the Navy Auxiliary Patrol. Hundreds of private and commercial boats were taken over to complement the RAN fleet in coastal patrol duties right up and down the east coast. Cairns Harbour was an important base for the RAN and US Navy and was under serious threat particularly from enemy sub marines. During the war years Nyleta had the designation E15 and was painted battleship grey. Nyleta was returned to the Terry Stephenson on board Nyleta at SYC Marina Cairns Harbour Board in 1945 and they kept her in the grey colour until she was sold in 1984. Some of his interesting sailing adventures included “The In 1989 Nyleta was found in an industrial yard in Mackay, Keppel Caper” sailing a Caper Cat (14 ft. open catamaran) she had been repainted but was looking pretty sad. She was from the Gold Coast to Great Keppel Island in a group bought for $2000 and the new owners then set about on a to promote the boats. At times the need for a knot to be tie’d in an emergency for a quick fix in the rigging or coming along side or mooring line snaps when berthing or a need for quick eye splice is called for. Below are some of the basic knots: Reef Knot: This knot is a well known, and is used for a wide variety of jobs. It should only be used for joining ropes of the same type and thickness in a emergency. If you tie the upper section the wrong way round it becomes a Granny Knot which still works but gain you no credit. Easy to tie: During the restoration with new diagonal “Left over Right & Right over Left” planking being added Terry was fortunately able to buy Nyleta in 1998, since owning her Terry has maintained her to a very high standard and added many extra comforts. He has added a rear awning that fits in nicely with her original lines and provides protection from the sun, also a rear railing that is topped in beautiful varnished timber. Terry and Helen have had great fun on Nyleta taking part in many SYC Powerboat Division events and cruises, exploring the Broadwater, Moreton Bay and its countless tributaries.

“Bowline” Quick and easy: This is one of the most useful knots used in seamanship, and well worth learning, the diagram shows a quick way to form it by twisting the rope and so forming a loop. During seamanship training there is a short verse to remember.

Nyleta is just over 10 metres (33 feet)in length, beam 3.35 metres (11 feet) draft 1.066 metres (3.5 feet). Power is from an ultra reliable and efficient 38 hp Perkins 4108 4 cylinder diesel that pushes her along at 8.5 knots. The boat has very practical layout that is simple and open, she has wide walk around decks. Due to the quality of the rebuild maintenance costs will remain low for many years, due to the efficient hull design and economical four cylinder diesel, running costs are extremely low. It is great to see our SYC sailors going so and Twilights divisions, meaning no one is being dominant well at these major events. and virtually every race we are having a different winner. This is great for building a good, competitive fleet. Plus, Enough writing, I’m hitting the water. I look forward to add in the addition of new boats like Auric’s Quest and seeing you all out there soon. Xvitesse, the future looks very bright. Our Thursday Twilights have been very consistent, 15-20 Ray McMahon boats every Thursday, giving a great spectacle on the water and fantastic atmosphere in the Club afterwards. Mother Vice Commodore Sail Nature has been playing her part by supplying very different weather conditions each week. This has been appreciated by the crews, giving each and every boat a chance to do well on the day that suited their conditions best. Our Offshore fleet has continued to grow with thanks to our hard-working Offshore representatives David Hows and Drew Jones. We now have a good consistent calendar that encourages boat owners to get on the water and enjoy the racing. The main Offshore focus for the last few months has been on major events and regattas. Boxing Day of course is the start of the Sydney Hobart classic and this year local boat ‘She’ took on the challenge. Owner Philip Bell has had a lifelong dream to compete in this race so a few years ago, he purchased She, a former divisional winner in this race. For most of the race She was in the top few of her division, but unfortunate wind changes saw Phil and his team drop down the ladder a little. It was a great effort by both boats in the end just to make it to the finish line. But then all of the great racing our boats have been doing Love Sailing? paid off. No wind, Championships. In Adelaide I finished the regattas mid nothing to do, so we let him steer the boat, around in big fleet, which I am very proud of, considering I was sailing circles..... waiting..... waiting. 28 | iN SYnC | Southport Yacht Club nacra 15 training camp

From Tuesday 17th to Friday 20th January, Southport Yacht Designed to meet the International Sailing Federation Club’s Hollywell Sailing Squadron held a four day Nacra (ISAF) criteria, the Nacra 15 class has become the new 15 Training Camp. Conducted by Olympic Silver Medallist official ISAF youth catamaran. Giving world class youth Darren Bundock, this is the first training camp of its kind sailors a modernised catamaran that can carry more crew in Australian history. Darren heads the Multihull division for weight than current designs. The Nacra 15 resembles a lot Australian Sailing as the Development Officer and Multihull to its bigger sister, the Olympic Nacra 17. In fact, the Nacra Sailing Coach. Darren was joined by coach’s Danny Fuller 15 is a mini version of the Olympic Nacra 17, creating a and Brady Lowe along with Olympic Class, Nacra 17 sailors pathway towards the Olympics. Sam Simmonds and Mac von Richter. The objective of the camp was to ensure the boats were setup correctly and the sailors had the opportunity to adapt to the correct techniques from the start. 11 vessels sailed on the Gold Coast Broadwater during the training sessions including Southport Yacht Club junior sailors, Matthew Hatton and Matthew Dickinson, on board the brand new Nacra 15, Team Fastway which is proudly sponsored by Fastway Couriers. Nacra 15’s are such an inspirational design for the youth sailors and assist immensely in gaining the on-water skills required to follow Olympic dreams. The Hollywell Sailing Academy continues to grow with the future of International Sailing, and opportunities like this allow continual expansion and improvement for the junior sailors of SYC.

As the President for 2017, I look forward to maintaining Neil Rowsthorn (profiled in the Summer iN SYnC) came to the special relationship between Sailability and Southport us through the Saturday sailing programme and it wasn’t Yacht Club for our mutual benefit. Sailability operate every long before he was coming along to all our sailing days and Tuesday at SYC Hollywell between 8am and 2pm and are taking clients out in the boats or helping on the dock. Phil always looking for new volunteers with or without sailing Thompson also wheelchair-bound had never sailed before experience. Visit sailabilitygc.org for further details. and is in full time employment in a senior management position in Brisbane. He took to sailing and was up for any challenge that came along. Peter Richardson who has several debilitating disabilities, comes to Sailability with a support organization on Tuesdays and takes clients out sailing having learned to sail on Thursdays, also joined the Saturday group when he was able.

These three sailors became members of SYC, entered the Pan Pacs and for practice took part with varied success in the SYC sailing programme for three races prior to the start Saturday Disabled Sailing and The Pan Pacific Masters Games of the games regatta. Winds for the regatta were generally kind although the first day saw over 20 knots across the Many SYC members will have noticed the small Sailability course. Neil completed all 7 races over the three days, Phil group on the Hollywell pontoon on Saturdays during 2016. 6 and Peter (whose aim was 2 races completed) completed This group was started by Ex-President Paul Dinniss, on 4. All were absolutely thrilled with those results as were the idea that there must be people with disabilities in the SGC volunteers who supported them all the way. our community that would benefit from the Sailability Congratulations to all the disabled sailors and a big thanks experience but were unable to attend the normal Tuesday to Paul and all the volunteers who made it possible. or Thursday sessions for reasons such as being in full Mon-Fri employment, or only come into respite over the weekends.

Despite the best efforts of Paul, the disabled group never grew into anything size-wise but it did attract some pretty special people through the year who thoroughly enjoyed coming along and either being taken out in the boats or learning to sail independently. This latter group became something of a success story because, of the 3 sailors with a disability that learned to sail independently in the Saturday Hansa Class Dingy Competitors group, two plus one other from the normal Thursday group successfully competed in the recent Pan Pacific Masters Jonathan Simms Games sailing regatta held up the road at Paradise Point Sailing Club in 4-6 November 2016. President, Sailability Gold Coast MELANOMA PATIENTS AUSTRALIA Southport Yacht Club recently held the annual charity race in support of Australia wide charity group Melanoma Patients Australia. A charity co-founded by long term member Daniel Belcher brother of our Gold and Silver Olympic Medallist Matthew Belcher OAM. Held in conjunction with the Club’s Thursday Twilight series, the annual charity race is a popular event with the sailors of SYC, and along with the assistance of Anne Yeomans, many local businesses donated to the cause with raffle prizes. The Boat Works became our major sponsor of the event, donating the feature auction item on the day, a haul out clean and several days of hardstand usage. Through crew member donations, raffle prizes and auctions items, this year we managed to raise a total of $4,077. Taking the overall sum raised in last 3 years to over $9000. This is a truly pleasing amount, I would like to thank the Commodore Kerry Noyes, winner of The Boat Works donation, Club, sailing members and sponsors for their support in this Jim (crew member Past Commodore Rob Mundle’s Toucanoes) great charity. and Melanoma Patients Australia cofounder Mathew Belcher.
