This building is part of the Oceanographic Institute which is committed to sharing its knowledge of the oceans. Next, you’ll visit the Prince’s Palace of Monaco, originally built as the Genoese fortress in 1191, has a long dramatic history of being bombarded and besieged by many foreign powers. • Today, Friday, April 10Th, We Wake up in Paris! Paris Will Be Our Home for the Next 2 Days
Today, Friday, April 10th, we wake up in Paris! Paris will be our home for the next 2 days. I am tingling with ex- citement! Have I told you that Paris is my favorite city in the world!! Paris is separated, both geographically and politically, into twenty arrondissements which are organized on a map in a spi- ral fashion like the shell of a snail. Each arrondissement is numbered with the most central (around the Louvre) numbered 1 and then increase progressively until the furthest and most east arrondissement, which is numbered 20.. You will also notice references to the Left and Right banks which separate Paris into the ar- rondissements north of the Seine (Right Bank/Rive Droite) and the area south of the Seine (Left Bank/Rive Gauche). These terms are from the Middle Ages and reference direction based on a downstream orientation. To help further define geography, hotels, museums, restaurants and other establishments usually reference the metro station(s) which is closest to the establishment. (for example, M-Invalides, M-Ecole Militaire). Paris has a terrific Metro system and many of the sites, such as Versailles, outside of the city also have train service from Paris. There are simple apps you can download to your phone for the Metro. The distance from the center of Paris (the Louvre) to most of the tourist’s sites in any direction is about 1.5 miles so if you prefer to walk, you might not use the Metro at all. The bus system, RER, is a little more complicated but once you get the hang of it, it is a great way to get to your destination.

In days of old, the hills of Montmartre were covered with vineyards that supplied most of Paris’ wine. Today the vineyards produce about 500 bottles per year The Romans called it Mons Mercurii, after erecting a hilltop shrine to their god of commerce. Medieval folks referred to it as Montmartre, or "Hill of Martyrs," after legend stated that their patron saint tucked his decapitated head under his arm and walked from this hill to a more comfortable resting spot north of Paris. In more modern times the village of Montmartre, at Paris’ highest point, is best known for the many painters who frequented its sidewalk café. Living and breathing their art and often trading it for a hot meal. Montmartre attracted such great artists as Picasso, Modigliani, Renoir, Manet, Toulouse Lautrec and Van Gogh. Walking around here it is easy to see the indelible mark from Montmartre’s colourful past. The narrow cobble stoned streets are still home to painters capitalising on the artists whose space they have taken on the Place du Tertre. Some of the cabarets once alive with song and young women dancing the cancan in Toulouse Lautrec’s paintings are still open. Two of the thirty windmills which ground the wheat grown on the butte in the 1600’s are still standing, and the last Paris surviving vineyards on Rue des Saules is still producing wine.

Paris Développement Semaest Semapa Semavip Sempariseine Mairie de Paris Information and Communications Department PEnglish A RS 30 1 Paris is undergoing a major moment of transition. Urban development projects, involving almost 10% of the capital’s territory, have been accelerated in order to meet the needs of all Parisians: housing, especially social housing, public amenities, green spaces and new transport lines, as demonstrated by the Maréchaux tramway line, as well as areas for job creation and research and innovation. The aim is clear: to develop the City, to breathe fresh air into districts that have been neglected, revive former railway brown field sites, meet sustainable development targets, to transform public areas in order to make them better suited to urban requirements and more aesthetically pleasing, and to renew design while showcasing the City’s heritage. The many architects, urban planners and designers involved in these projects are a sign of this intention: Paris remains proud of its history while concentrating on its ambition to be a 21st Century capital city, open to change, innovation and diversity. By promoting modern architecture, Paris is building tomorrow’s heritage today. Meanwhile, Paris is also located in the middle of a built-up area of almost 10 million inhabitants, whose energy ranks among the highest on an international scale. The City’s overall potential, which is boosted by tight and respectful co-operation between local authorities, is enormous. This is the starting point for Paris Métropole, which will reveal its modern side in order to assert the City’s international ranking and its identity.
