A staple in the New York region and an emerging program on the national stage, the Manhattanville College Athletic Department continues to bolster its reputation as a program on the rise in all areas: athletic achievement, academic success and overall participation. More than 300 Valiant student-athletes (nearly 20 percent of the student body) took part in intercollegiate athletics during the 2012-13 school year, showcasing the continued and rapid growth of athletics at Manhattanville. With women’s golf beginning play as a varsity sport last year, the program now sponsors 20 competitive intercollegiate teams – including eight teams that have been established or re-established in the last six years alone. And the teams at Manhattanville have proved themselves more than able to hold their own in an increasingly competitive athletic landscape. Fourteen of the school’s 20 intercollegiate programs earned berths in their respective conference championships last year, while both men’s hockey and women’s hockey teams received national rankings over the course of the year. On an individual level, many Valiant student-athletes were honored in 2012-13 as well. Field hockey junior Amanda DeChent was named the program’s fi rst-ever NFHCA All-American, giving Manhattanville at least one All-America selection in 13 of the last 14 years, while senior high jumper Bill Motherway was crowned the school’s fi rst champion at the MAC Indoor Track & Field Championships. Manhattanville also boasted two Freedom Conference Players of the Year to go with 45 combined All-Conference honorees. In addition, nearly 40 former Valiants have gone on to play their sport professionally either domestically or overseas in recent years, including former baseball standout Dan Fiorito ’12, who signed a deal with the New York Yankees in August 2012. But at Manhattanville, athletics is only one part of becoming a well- rounded student-athlete. In the classroom, Valiant athletes consistently achieve higher grade-point averages than the student body as a whole, Manhattanville Quick Facts: as evidenced by the 3.15 cumulative Athletic Department GPA for both the Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 semesters and the fact that 14 Valiant • 20 Varsity Sports teams recorded a team GPA of 3.000 or higher for the spring term. Levinthal has been a part of Manhattanville in some capacity for 15 years, having previously served 12 seasons as head coach of the school’s nationally recognized men’s hockey program from 1999 until 2011. Levinthal has led the Valiant athletic program to unprecedented heights in recent years, as Manhattanville has collected 56 conference championships – 29 regular-season championships and 27 tournament titles – in the last decade. In that span, the program has also produced 32 conference Players of the Year, 18 All-American selections and one National Player of the Year. As a head coach with the men’s hockey team, Levinthal stepped aside with the most wins of any mentor in Manhattanville department history, posting a 202-84-28 (.688) record in 12 seasons and twice earning ECAC West Conference Coach of the Year honors. He left as the 14th winningest coach in NCAA hockey history (all Divisions) and sixth among Division III leaders in terms of winning percentage, and led the team to four NCAA Tournaments, four ECAC West Tournament titles and a pair of fi rst-place fi nishes in the ECAC West regular-season standings. Manhattanville had another successful season with Levinthal at the helm in 2012-13. While no team was able to break through with an NCAA Tournament berth, 14 of 20 teams saw postseason play. On the fi eld, the department boasted its fi rst fi eld hockey All-American in program history in junior Amanda DeChent, to go with two Freedom Conference Players of the Year (DeChent and Jessica Van Galen) and 45 All-Conference honorees. Off the fi eld, Van Galen gave Manhattanville its third straight year with a CoSIDA Academic All-American thanks to her spot on the second team, while she was also one of a pair of CoSIDA Academic All-District selections and one of the school’s 95 student-athletes recognized by their respective conferences for academic success. In 2007-08, Levinthal guided the Athletics Department as it transitioned from the Skyline Conference to the Freedom Conference and also reintroduced volleyball and cross country programs to the school. The Valiants saw immediate success in its new conference as two teams clinched Freedom Conference regular-season titles and three programs won conference tournaments in advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The women’s hockey team also advanced to the program’s third National Championship game, while the women’s soccer team reached the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst time in program history. Levinthal also led the Valiants to a record-breaking year in their fi nal season with the Skyline Conference in 2006-07, as a program-record six teams won conference championships and a record fi ve teams qualifi ed for the NCAA Tournament. His men’s hockey team spent 13 consecutive weeks as the top-ranked team in the nation and earned its fi rst-ever berth in the national semifi nals, while goaltender Andrew Gallant became the fi rst Manhattanville student-athlete to be named a National Player of the Year. Six coaches were named as conference Coach of the Year, while a program-best four Valiant student-athletes were also named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honorees. And, for the fi rst time ever, Valiant teams won more league championships than any other Skyline Conference team. Levinthal saw immediate athletic success during his fi rst year at the helm, as all 14 of Manhattanville’s athletic programs participated in postseason play during the 2003-04 year. Four teams earned bids to ECAC postseason tournaments, while the women’s ice hockey program earned its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. But in addition to athletic success, at the heart of every successful program lie sound resources for its lifeblood – its student-athletes. Therefore, Levinthal has made it a priority to provide the resources needed to create an environment in which Manhattanville student-athletes can achieve at the highest level academically, socially and athletically. In 2004, Levinthal received the honor of serving on the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee. The NCAA selects 13 members to serve on the committee and only four from Division III institutions. Levinthal began his term on Sept. 1, 2004 and left his four-year post on at the beginning of the 2008-09 school year. A 1995 graduate of Hobart College, Levinthal is committed to developing all aspects of the athletics program. In his tenure at Manhattanville, Levinthal’s agenda has included: Student-Athlete Development - Manhattanville continues to be on the cutting edge in the total development of its student-athletes. Valiant student- athletes have exhibited a strong presence and desire to serve the New York area. All varsity teams participate in outreach activities, positively impacting numerous area youth groups, hospitals, schools and agencies. Professionalism - Under Levinthal’s guidance, Manhattanville athletics received a much-needed face-lift. With a new website, logo, team colors and method of business, he has streamlined and energized the department. The result has been increased exposure to Manhattanville student-athletes, improved performance both on and off the fi eld, and increased support from fans and alumni. Exposure - Manhattanville Athletics continues to maintain a strong presence on national and regional media outlets. Levinthal has helped increase the program’s media opportunities as well as displaying the values of the Valiants constantly in the public eye. 2 2013 Manhattanville Women’s Soccer Media Guide Coaching Staff Head Coach Matt Paton Ninth Season • Keene State ’91 Easily the most successful mentor in program history, Matt Paton is back for his ninth season as Manhattanville’s head women’s soccer coach in 2013, having completely rebuilt the program into a perennial contender in the Freedom Conference and a major player on both the regional and national stage. Paton also serves the school as Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance. In eight years at Manhattanville, Paton has earned three Freedom Conference Coach of the Year awards and led the program to its only three postseason titles, including the only two NCAA Tournament berths in school history. He has coached 29 All-Conference honorees at the school, including 13 first-team selections and the only three four-time All-Conference picks in program history. In addition, four of the program’s five NSCAA All-Region selections have come during Paton’s time at the school. Paton guided the Valiants to a 6-11 record in 2012 despite fielding a team with only four upperclassmen. He brought in a massive 17-player incoming class to replenish the talent on the roster and set the stage for future successes, and two of those newcomers - freshmen Rebecca Breve and Meghan Marcotte - were named to the All-Freedom Conference second team to lead three All-Conference picks overall. Paton did perhaps his best coaching job in 2010, when Manhattanville rebounded from a tough start to sweep through the Freedom Conference Tournament and earn the conference tournament title and an NCAA Tournament berth. The Valiant leader took a squad that went 0-11 against non-conference foes during the regular season and galvanized it just in time for conference play: after fighting for a third-place finish in the regular season to reach the postseason for the sixth straight year, Manhattanville advanced past second-seeded Eastern in penalty kicks and then toppled top-ranked FDU-Florham (both on the road) to celebrate another conference championship. Four Valiants were named to the All-Freedom Conference teams following the season, led by four- time All-Conference picks Ali Bromson and Holly Nonis on the first team and Morgan Rebollal and Sonia Occhionero on the second team, marking the fifth straight year that Paton put at least four players on the All-Conference team. In addition, Nonis was named to the NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region third team, making her the first player in program history to earn multiple All-Region honors. Paton led Manhattanville to the most successful season in program history in 2009, as the Valiants posted the third-largest improvement in Division III to finish the year with a program-record 17 wins and the program’s second Freedom Conference regular-season championship in three seasons. The Valiants were regionally ranked by the NSCAA in all but one week over the course of the year and also received the first national ranking in school history with a 23rd-place spot in the final week of the regular season. The season included the best start to a year ever (4-0) as well as the longest winning streak in program history – a dominating 13-game streak that saw the Valiants out-score their opponents by a 41-7 margin with seven shutouts. During the season, Paton became the program’s all-time winningest coach with a 3-1 win at Ursinus College and also earned his 100th career victory as a head coach with a triumph over Ramapo College on October 7. Following the campaign, Manhattanville earned six spots on the All-Freedom Conference team, including Freedom Player of the Year Holly Nonis and a conference- best four first-team selections. As a result, Paton was also named the conference Coach of the Year for the third time in four seasons. In addition, Nonis and Ali Bromson became the first pair of Valiant teammates to earn NSCAA All-Region honors with first-team and second-team selections, respectively. Paton’s rebuilding project came to fruition in 2007, as the Valiants earned the first NCAA Tournament berth in program history, capping a historic season that saw the team claim its first-ever conference regular-season and tournament championships. After beginning the season 0-11-2 against a treacherous non-conference slate, the Valiants went 5-0-1 in conference play and swept through the Freedom Conference tournament, allowing a conference-low three goals in six Freedom matches. As a result, the team placed a conference-best six players on the All-Conference team, including Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year Holly Nonis. For his effort, Paton was honored with the Freedom Conference Coach of the Year award for a second time. After inheriting a team that went 2-15-1 in 2004 – one year before his arrival – Paton led the Valiants to a then-program-record 14 wins and the ECAC Metro Tournament Championship a mere two years later in 2006, achieving the first postseason tournament title in the history of the Valiant program. Manhattanville’s move from seven wins in 2005 to 14 in 2006 was the second largest improvement in the country and signaled that the Valiant women’s soccer program was poised to become a player on the regional stage. In the opening round of the Skyline Conference Tournament, the second-seeded Valiants toppled Saint Joseph’s (L.I.) College, 3-0 at GoValiants.com Field, breaking Manhattanville’s single-season wins record with their 12th victory of the year. Despite falling in the conference championship match, the Valiants earned the top seed in the ECAC Metro Tournament and claimed the title at home with a 2-0 win over The Paton Profile Farmingdale State College on November 12. 2013 Manhattanville Women’s Soccer Media Guide 3 Coaching Staff Assistant Coach Bailey Flood Second Season • Manhattanville ’10 One of the most decorated players in Manhattanville women’s soccer history, Bailey Flood ’10 returns for her second season as an assistant coach alongside Matt Paton in 2013.

In her role as an assistant coach, Flood plays an integral role in the day-to-day operations of the women’s soccer program, including on- and off-campus recruiting, practice and game preparation and management, fundraising and academic monitoring.

In her first season as a coach with the Valiants, the team posted a 6-11 (2-5 Freedom) record despite fielding a roster that featured only five upperclassmen and 20 underclassmen, including 17 newcomers. Two of those freshmen, Rebecca Breve and Meghan Marcotte, were named to the All-Freedom Conference second team as part of three All-Conference honorees overall.

Flood spent the 2011 season as the top assistant coach for Mike Barroqueiro at Division I Iona College, working with the team’s midfielders and defenders. The Gaels finished the year with a 5-10-2 overall record and a 4-3-2 MAAC record, coming one point short of a spot in the MAAC Tournament.

In addition to her time on the sideline, Flood also received her United States Soccer Federation (USSF) “B” License during the offseason, the second-highest USSF license that a coach can obtain.

After two years away from Purchase, Flood returned to the Valiant women’s soccer program that she helped to resurrect a few years ago. As a part of the winningest class in program history, she helped the squad to a 48-27-7 record in four years and played a role in earning the two highest single-season win totals ever at the school, including an incredible 17-2-1 senior season that saw the team achieve the first national ranking in program history and win a record 13 consecutive games.

On an individual level, Flood was the first player in team history and one of only eight ever at Manhattanville to be a four-time All-Conference first-team selection, earning the honors from the Skyline Conference as a freshman and from the Freedom Conference in each of her final three years. She still ranks sixth in program history with nine career match-winning goals, while also sitting eighth in matches played (79) and seventh in matches started (78) over her career.

Flood graduated from Manhattanville in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology. She currently resides in Purchase as she pursues her master’s degree in education at Manhattanville. Assistant Coach Graham Kennett Fourth Season • East Anglia ’83 Graham Kennett is back for his fourth season as a volunteer assistant coach with the Manhattanville women’s soccer team in 2013.

With Manhattanville, Kennett assists with daily coaching sessions and provides input relating to game formations and tactics. He also designs and runs training sessions as coach of the Valiant defensive unit.

Kennett has spent the last 10 years coaching soccer at Byram Hills High School, serving as an assistant with the varsity boys’ team since 2002 while also serving as head coach of the varsity girls’ team from 2002-05. On the boys’ side, he has helped the team to its first-ever New York State championship in 2007 and a 98-8-5 record over the last five years that includes five league titles, four section titles and three state final four appearances. In 2010, Kennett was named the National High School Assistant Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

At the youth level, Kennett currently serves as the Girls Program Coordinator for the New York Soccer Club and the head coach of the national-championship winning Girls ’98 National 3v3 Team.

Kennett earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom, while earning an executive MBA from and a master’s in physical education and coaching from Ball State University.
