WHO WJlS GEORGE M. COHAN?

To date there is only one entertainment figure honored with a statue in New York's Theatre District: George Michael Cohan.

In 1958, lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II wanted to insure that Broadway never forgot the producer, playwright, actor, director, and songwriter whom many con- sider the Father of the American Musical. But did Cohan invent the modern musical? Some say that the new form was born out of Cohan's ego; others are convinced it was out of the necessity to keep his family working. Regardless of the answer, by age 14, George had declared that he would write and star in his own plays and own his own theatre and publishing house. He fulfilled all of these goals by the age of 35. Weaned on a three-performance-a-day schedule in , where his fam- ily was subjected to unscrupulous producers and bad-tempered audiences, George honed his craft as a song and dance man. His personal style was confrontational to say the least; but this brashness was ameliorated by his genuine love of "show business." It also permeated his work, which inaugurated a truly American theat- rical style in musicals that boldly contrasted with the genteel evenings of Euro- pean operettas. Few acts in Vaudeville were as closely knit as The Four Cohans. They frequently worked on the prestigious but exhausting Keith circuit, grinding through 4 to 6 performances a day! Since the theater was all that young George knew, he was not shy about telling off stagehands, performers and even theater managers. George's plays were about entertainment first. He often used show biz as a background because it was the only life he knew; for him, it became a symbol of life itself. He initially sharpened his ability from writing one-liners for vaude- ville comics to fashioning complete sketches for his family. The next logical step was to create an entire evening that would best feature his talents and those of his family. So as George matured, so did the writing and form of musical comedy. For Cohan, there was no dividing line between his personal and professional life. George was twice married. His first wife was the popular singer! comedienne Ethel Levey. After conducting most of their courtship by mail, they married in 1899. Ethel joined the Cohan's for several engagements but was too talented to stay in George's shadow for long. After their divorce in 1907, she remained one of vaudeville's most popular entertainers. Within a few months, George married Agnes Nolan, a young chorus girl who was refreshingly unimpressed with his fame. Despite George's numerous affairs the marriage endured. (Continued on Page 7)

Around 1903 he was introduced to Sam Harris, a former boxing promoter and gambler who combined a solid business sense with a for theatre. When Cohan invited Harris to co-produce his next show, they formed one of Broadway's most successful partnerships in motion. George went for the American jugular, populating his plays and musicals like "Little Johnny Jones", "George Washing- ton, Jr." and "45 Minutes From Broadway" with working-class folks. His charac- ters spoke in honest colloquial American, avoiding the high-falutin' and false. Above all, however, Cohan's theatrical style was about pacing. He said of his work: "Speed! Speed! And lots of it." He had an uncanny knack for reducing scripts (his own or others) to their liveliest essentials, a process which came to be known as "Cohanizing." Like the perennial student pulling an all-nighter to write every term paper, George's musicals often were never completed until the third or fourth week of rehearsal. But for all of his "seat-of-the-pants" methods, Cohan's productions had a ragtag unity-an authentic American voice, style and spirit that had not been seen before and which permanently changed the entertainment landscape. So is Cohan the Father of the American Musical? Maybe. But he was-with- out question-a relative the musical could never have lived without. So relax, sit back and enjoy "GEORGE M!"

14 WHO'S WHO ON OUR STAFF

Elizabeth Dale (Producer) We've lost track of the number of productions with which Liz has been involved, but we know it's several. Her most recent production was last season's ERMA award-winning production of "42nd Street". She has been a member of the Board of Directors for 18 years and served as Vice President for 15 of those years. She has produced or co- produced at least one show per year during that time, but has also worked backstage as Stage Manager, ASM, and even as light- ing operator. In recent years she has also shared the responsibility of the opening night refreshments. She gives her husband and daughter all the bl., uh ... credit for getting her involved with community theater.

Kathy Burch (Director) What better way to spend your 40th anniversary in theater (has it really been THAT long?) than di- recting one of your favorite musicals-"George M!". Perform- ing on stage since she was 5, Kathy has pretty much done every possible job there is to do onstage and off-so Directing seemed the natural next step-and she says she's loving it!! As a per- former, Kathy's numerous credits include WVLO's "Guys & Dolls" (Adelaide-ERMA Award) and "How To Succeed ... " (Smitty); SDG's "Fiddler On The Roof" (Golde), "Music Man" (Mrs. Shinn), "Side By Side By Sondheim", "Grand Night For Singing" and "Brigadoon" (Meg); FMT's "" (Ilona-Dean Goodman Award) and "Light Up The Sky" (Stella); BBB's "" (Fanny Brice); STOC's "Steel Magnolias" (Ouiser): Bus Barn's "Rodgers & Hart: A Celebration" as well as Helen Hobart in "Once In A Lifetime", Emma Goldman in "Tintypes", Nurse in "Romeo & Juliet", Amy in "Company" and Mdme. Since then he has vocally and instrumentally directed such productions as "Good News", "The Wizard of Oz", ''Anything Goes", "Sweet Charity", "", ''A Chorus Line", "", "Oklahoma!", "", "Peter Pan", "Marne", "Sound of Music", "Grease", "Annie", "Pippin", "Hello, Dolly" and the list goes on and on for several groups - SDG, TITM, CMTSJ and AMTSJ. 15 Bob is the Musical Director at Presentation HS whose Jazz Choir, "The Presenta- tions", performed in the Carnegie Hall Jazz Invitational last year. He just recently returned from the great "Hall" with a return invitation featuring this year, "The Spartoons" from SJSu. Congratulations, Bob, and welcome back to the staff]

Diane "Mom" Reynolds (Vocal Director) "Mom" was Vocal Director for the opening production of the season, "Kiss Me, Kate", and for last season's "Nunsense Jamboree" and "Anything Goes". The rest of her credits with WVLO are too numerous to mention, but she has been involved with musical theater for more than 30 years as a vocal and/or musical director as well as pianist. She has participated in over 250 different musicals with almost every community theatre group in the Bay Area, most of them several times! Mom typically wears several hats at once, sometimes re- hearsing for one production while another is in performance, and at the same time works with school choirs and productions during the year, as well as individual vocal coaching. However, she does take the time to spoil her two darling grand- daughters, and one-year old grandson and return them to their parents.

Kristen Scott (Choreographer) Kristen returns to our staff after a two-year absence; she previously assisted with the choreogra- phy for "Damn Yankees". She is currently the artistic director for CenterStage Theatre Touring Company (which promotes WVLO, SDG, and SCP productions through performances). Other past productions include choreographing the CenterStage television performance in the 2002 San Jose Holiday parade, CMTS]'s "State Fair", PYT's "Godspell" and the California State Youth Accolades competition/show. Kristen's performing credits include "West Side Story", "The Secret Garden", "Oklahoma!" and most recently "No, No Nanette" with SDG where she was the Dance Captain. Kristen sends a special thanks to Marie Stinnette for her support, to the cast for all their hard work and enthusiasm and to her husband for all his love.

Bob Wallitner (Production Stage Manager) This will complete Bob's fourth season as our Resident Stage Manager since join- ing WVLO in October, 1999, for "Phantom". He had also served as SM for several productions for SDG. During these past few years, Bob has been involved in some capacity in almost every show produced in this theater and is still thrilled with the "magic of theater" that introduced him to this close and caring "theat- rical family".

16 Stephen C. Wathen (Production Designer) This is Stephen's 46th show for WVLO in a career that spans some 300 stage produc- tions, a couple of dozen movies and a few hundred more TV shows. He is also a playwright and Ohlone College in Fremont will be presenting a spectacular new production of his successful stage version of "Dracula" this Halloween with Stephen also designing.

Michael Glen Munoz (Lighting Designer) Michael returns for his 17th production of brightening our stage; his lighting ef- fects for our last production of "Forever Plaid" earned him spe- cial kudos from the reviewer. Not only did he design the light- ing for our opening show of the season, Kiss Me, Kate" he also appeared on stage as a gangster. His creative talents have also been utilized by SDG (he just did "No, No Nanette"), SCPL and CCMT. Michael has done lighting for Woodminster Ampitheater as well as for "Broadway Babies" in SF.He earned his BA in Fine Arts at SJSU with a minor in dance.

Bob Nelson (Sound Designer) Bob has been designing sound for WVLO for the past 5 shows, "Forever Plaid", "Kiss Me, Kate", "Anything Goes", "Nunsense III", and "42nd Street".
