4 A welcome message from Weathervane Theatre Board President David Kenney

I would like to welcome you to Season 54 of the Weathervane Theatre. Each year Weathervane Theatre brings live professional theatre to the North Country - a little bit of Broadway for your enjoyment. We have grown to a company of over 60 people. Yes, it takes that many people to make live theatre happen. It is through your support that makes the Weathervane Theatre possible. I want to thank our Company, the Board of Directors, the Alumni, Our Founder Gibbs Murray and the Volunteers for all their hard work, not only during the season, but throughout the year. Tickets cover only about 60% of the operational cost of the Theatre. Fundraising makes up the approximate 200 thousand dollar difference. Many of you have already given to our Annual Fund. We thank you for your support. If you enjoy what you see at the Theatre tonight, consider making a donation – it is never too late.

Thank you for coming to the Weathervane Theatre tonight.

I hope you come back often. Enjoy the show!

5 6 A message from Weathervane Theatre Co-Founder & Producing Director Gibbs Murray

THERE’S NOTHING BETTER THAN LIVE THEATRE Summer Theatre arrived in Whitefield in 1934 with the Chase Barn Playhouse in a re-assembled barn from Twin Mountain. The Chase Barn Playhouse ran twenty-four summers doing one play per week in an eight-week summer season with a Company of professional actors, interns and community. Lucy Chase Sparks became the producer of Chase Barn Playhouse following its founder, Will Chase, her uncle. Lucy met with Tom Haas and me in 1965 at her home behind the Playhouse, welcoming us to open a summer theatre—not at Chase Barn—“it’s off the beaten path”—recognizing the growing need of accessibility. Weathervane Theatre opened at a barn on the -traveled Route #3 north of downtown Whitefield on the way to Lancaster, New Hampshire, summer 1966. We followed the Chase plan of a play a week for the first two summers however our audiences booked individ- ually—the hotel groups who reserved specific nights at Chase Barn were no longer a tradition. In 1968 we ini- tiated a three-week mid-season section of three plays alternating on different nights, a practice long employed by theatre festivals to maximize visiting audiences. The alternating repertory became the full season practice of Weathervane Theatre in 1969. One of the three shows in the 1968 mix was a musical. That word “musical” has become from the early 20th century a major “playing card” of American Theatre. In 1969 we added three blockbuster musicals to the seven-show rep: , , and The Fantasticks. The point of this “synopsized” history—to cut to the chase (barn?)—funny how that works—never mind—but for all the changes, turmoil, innovation et al, theatre has not only survived, it flourishes and is a barometer of our times. In art, life, society and more, theatre is shared. You can see a movie at home or alone in a movie theatre on a

Tuesday afternoon but theatre is alive among people and response. The is not recorded. The alternating repertory of Weathervane Theatre this summer like all previous seasons offers a broad range of titles, styles and hopefully acclimating to our contemporary audiences tastes and relevance—and this season as always six of those titles are musical—and there are seven shows in the rep. I said “musical” in the singular. Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill is an enactment of the great Billie Holiday’s life which features many of her most famous songs. Spring Awakening critically received as the best new musical of this new century will be an eighth show addition to the season: a separate concert version featuring the 2019 Weathervane interns. ’s White Christmas has in this decade been added to the roster of frequently performed musicals—and it plays year round to take the chill off winter with warm feelings. The Drowsy Chaperone is a favorite Tony Award-winning musical spoof of early musicals; Bright Star the recent Broadway hit with a bluegrass score com- posed by , and then there’s Sister Act to leave everyone laughing at end of the season. The two plays of the summer are Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks of a woman in a retirement community who hires a younger man as her dance instructor . . . The longest title belongs to the most heralded play from and with each having over two year runs - based on the best selling novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. A very personal note: I had the privilege of seeing both London and New York productions and have hoped to have Weathervane get rights to do this wonderful play. It’s an education and a joy I wish I had learned earlier on, and one that I think all of us who go to theatre can attest—young and old—it’s one of the great experiences that will elevate one’s own sense of compassion—which, of course, is why we share theatre together.

Happy 54th Weathervane Theatre Season for all of us.

7 8 A message from Weathervane Theatre Producing Artistic Director Ethan Paulini

When I pulled into Whitefield on that late June evening in 2012 I was ready for a challenging Season 47 as member of the resident acting company. As you can probably surmise, it did not disappoint. I never could have imagined that just a handful of years later I would be sitting down to write my Producing Artistic Director’s note for the 54th Season’s . And yet, here we are, ready to embark on a season full of curiosity, surprise, and discovery. I am particularly excited about this season’s roster of shows. While they run the gamut from familiar to brand new, they each hold the distinction of making their debut as part of the unique alternating repertory for which the Weathervane has become nationally known. During my subsequent years as a member of the Weathervane family (I use that word by deliberate design), the friendships, collaborations, and unique artistic experiences I have accumulated remain unparalleled by any other facet of my career. To describe this place to the average outsider is an exercise in tall tale telling. To watch the listener’s eyes widen and hear the incredulous tone in their voice as they ask “You do how many shows?” “How long do you rehearse?” is the reminder, that helps us celebrate our accomplishments and justify our frustrations. To be a part of this community is what it is all about! And you, as our audience, are a huge part of that community! We hope you take pride in the vital role you play in our lives and careers as the witnesses to our thoughts, feelings, ideas and hopes. With so many wonderful new stories to tell, we have assembled an astounding group of theatre makers to make Season 54 one to remember. From veterans to virgins, we will come together, as this company has done for more than half a century, to not only entertain, but to challenge you to think, to feel, to help spark debate, to provide perspective and maybe even solace. That is what this collection of shows is designed to do. And I think come Labor Day you will have a hard time picking your favorite. I remain humbled and grateful to be in a position to continue the vision and legacy of the late Tom Haas, our beloved Gibbs Murray, and the literal thousands of artists who have come before us. I am so fortunate to be in the position to not only work alongside so many whom have become my family through the Weathervane, but to invite my family from elsewhere to share in this distinctive experience. As a new leader of an organization there will be some things I do a little differently, but one thing I can promise you will not change is my commitment to top notch storytelling, high production values, dynamic performances and world class creative teams. Give us the chance to do what we love and I think you will love it too. As an artist, I have always believed that everyone, everywhere deserves access to quality, live theatre. You have made a choice to support that by joining us! This season, I encourage you to take a chance on all we have to offer. Come see a show you may have never heard of before. Check out one of our special events (like the interns in their very own MainStage concert production of the Tony-winning Spring Awakening) or just take a few moments to engage with us as friends. Please keep supporting us in whatever way you are able. Donate, subscribe, volunteer, be a community advocate. It all helps. As we continue to grow and evolve as an organization, I welcome your feedback. My inbox is always open at [email protected]. Live theatre is a shared experience and we thank you for being a part of that with us. Now sit back and let the stories wash over you out there in the dark. And of course we’ll see you in the lobby after for a handshake, a fist bump, or a hug! To Season 54 and beyond! Thank you for supporting live theatre in the North Country! - Ethan Paulini

10 A message from Weathervane Theatre Associate Artistic Director Robert H. Fowler

Welcome to the Weathervane Theatre, as we celebrate our 54th Season of live professional theater in the North Country. I am grateful to be a part of this amazing community committed to sharing life experiences through live theater. Before continuing, I must acknowledge Jacques Stewart, my Weathervane mentor and former Artistic Director, for bringing me to this treasure of a place. Thank you. It is a privilege and honor to be working with Ethan Paulini, Producing Artistic Director, and share in his commitment to presenting remarkable theatrical productions intended to entertain, reflect, rejuvenate, and even initiate conversation. Along with Ethan, a tremendous artistic team, crew, actors, musicians, staff and volunteers, I welcome you to the Weathervane Theatre.

We are thankful that you decided to join us. You are vital to The Weathervane Theatre, and our goal remains to make you feel as such. As you will see throughout the season, the Weathervane Theatre is community oriented. You might just notice your neighbor, or someone you know, as part of the company. The Weathervane Theatre Programs include the Patchwork Players, as well as the Windsock Theatre Camp. The Patchwork Players is a company of young actors who perform children shows locally, and the Windsock Theater Camp is an opportunity for kids and teens to be exposed to the complete theatrical experience. Please feel free to inquire about both programs. Bring your children and/or grandchildren, and join us in any capacity.

Having been a part of the Weathervane family since 2010, I am honored to play a part in continuing the vision of bringing live theater to Whitefield, as founded by Gibbs Murray and the late Tom Haas. We hope you feel inclined to return, or even more so, to become a part of our family. Learn more about us by visiting our website, www.weathervanetheatre.org. Thank you for supporting The Weathervane Theatre, and live theater in the North Country.

You just have to feel it. Anything I do sing is part of my life.” Born Eleanora Fagan in 1915, Billie Holiday experienced a dif- ficult upbringing. She found comfort in music, singing along to the records of Bessie Armstrong and Louis Armstrong. By age 15 she started singing in NYC night clubs. Around 1930 she renamed herself “Billie” after film star Billie Dove. At 18, Holiday was discovered performing in a Harlem jazz club by producer John Hammond which led to recording work with an up-and-coming clarinetist and bandleader Benny Goodman. She went on to work with other noted musicians of the day and acquired the name “Lady Day” in 1937 while working with her life and these are reflected in Count Basie’s Orchestra. her music with songs like “T’ain’t Nobody’s Business If I Do” and “My The following year she broke ground as one of the first female Man.” While Holiday continued a African American vocalists to work with a white orchestra (Artie steady stream of success, she also Shaw Orchestra). Apprentice Program Eager to encourage young people to learn more about the workings of live theatre, we have established Apprentice positions. Local young people work alongside pro- fessionals, gaining hands-on experience in technical fields of theatre, and receive a modest stipend. Funded in part by annual gifts from Richard and Terry Portner, we hope to continue and grow these opportunities as a natural bridge beyond Windsock Camp and college training. 39 Grants & Capital Fund FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTORS Weathervane Theatre is supported by a grant from the Neil & Louise Tillotson Fund of the NH Charitable Foundation.

Weathervane Theatre is supported by a grant from the NH State Council Additionally, we receive support through Donor-designated funds administered by Foundation, including the Lewis on the Arts Darby Fund, established by the Bradley Thayer family.

Grants also received from: Union Mutual Fire Insurance Company The Sally Hough Family Foundation, Windsock Camp Specific

Capital Fund Our recovery from the fire of October 2011 was only made possible by the overwhelming support of so many of our friends and benefactors. The generous gifts and pledges more than matched the insurance to help us not only rebuild and renovate quickly, but also allowed us to be able to manage the costs over the following years. Not only do we require a space in which to perform and produce, we also have the chal- lenge of housing nearly 60 company members every summer. Three summers ago, we were able to move the residence to the former Spalding Inn property in a lease arrange- ment with a group of area folks who purchased it with that purpose in mind, at least on a temporary basis. In January of 2017, the Weathervane Theatre did in fact purchase the property and it has become our permanent home . . . and a space that offers not only future stability but also potential as we continue to investigate long range plans and devel- opment for the future. With the modest remainder of the post-fire replacement financing and the acquisition of the Spalding residence, we now have a combined Capital Fund which will address physi- cal property needs for years to come. The gifts noted here represent not only barn-prompted pledge increments and gifts, but also gifts toward the purchase of the Spalding. Received during the current fiscal year that began October 1, 2016, we are still receiving - and welcoming! - pledges and gifts to the Capital Fund. We ask you to consider investing in our future with a Capital gift - which in turn reduces Annual Fund dependence on the need for contributions that meet the cost of financing our operations. And, we still have some Naming Opportunities available and hope to celebrate at least one of our named spaces this summer.

The creation of this fund furthers the mission of the WVAA in its dedication to enlarging creative and financial support for the Weathervane Theatre.

The vision of the WVAA is to use the fund to make an annual gift to the theatre for special projects, guest art- ists, guest directors, or guest designers. This year, the Richard and Terry Portner Fund supports the work of Cady Huffman, the guest director of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

IN MEMORIAM - GRANT FULLER A tribute to a great talent and a great man. By Justin Parks Grant Fuller was a giant of a man, and that’s talking about his physical stature least of all. His generosity, demeanor and all around willingness to make this theatre the very best it could be made him so much more than our co-worker or an employee; it made him an integral part of the Weathervane Family. Whether he was onstage delighting audiences with his booming voice in numerous productions over the years, playing with paint, creating props or mentoring any of our artists, he always had a calm presence and a perfectly timed joke. Even after he was unable to be a part of the season full time he offered his help and guidance painting sets, finding props, and lending an ear. He was the embodiment of what this theatre and its artists strive to be. Grant was a giant of a man. He will be deeply missed this season and every season to come. He was and will always be a part of our Weathervane Theatre Family. 60 2019 Publisher, Composers, Author Bios CONTRACTUAL REQUIREMENTS ASK FOR THE INCLUSION OF THE FOLLOWING.
