2018 © The Foundation Celebrating Jimmy Nederlander James M. Nederlander or “Jimmy,” Chairman of The , was the visionary theatrical impresario who built one of the largest private live entertainment companies in the world known for producing and presenting world-class entertainment since 1912. Jimmy started in the theatre at age 7 sweeping floors for his father, David Tobias (D.T.) Nederlander, in Detroit, Michigan. During a career that spanned over 70 years, Jimmy amassed a network of premier legitimate including on Broadway: the , Gershwin, Lunt- Fontanne, Marquis, Minskoff, Nederlander, Neil Simon, , and the world famous Palace; in : Auditorium and Private Bank Theaters, Broadway Playhouse, Cadillac Palace, and Oriental Theaters; in : The Pantages; and in : the Adelphi, Aldwych, and Dominion. He produced over one hundred acclaimed Broadway musicals and plays including , , La Cage aux Folles, Les Liaisions Dangereuses, , Nine, , , , and Adventures of Nicholas Nickelby, The , Woman of the Year, and many more. Jimmy was credited with developing the outdoor amphitheatre concept as the developer of premier venues including the New Jersey Garden State Arts Center, Pine Knob Music Theatre, the Merriweather Post Pavilion, the Pacific Amphitheatre, and as the decades-long operator of the Greek Theatre where he presented headline artists including Tony Bennett, , , , and Frank Sinatra, among many others. “Generous,” “loyal” and “trusted” are just a few of the accolades his friends use to describe him. Jimmy was beloved by the industry and the recipient of many distinguished honors including an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from the University of Connecticut (2014), the Exploring the Arts Foundation Award (2014), the United Nations Foundation Champion Award (2012), ’s Schoenfeld Vision for Arts Education Award (2011), the New York Pop’s Man of the Year (2008), and the for Lifetime Achievement (2004). To mark the Nederlanders’ centennial in 2012, The New York Landmarks Conservancy proclaimed Jimmy to be a “Living Landmark.” The National High School Awards is called the Jimmy® Awards in celebration of his career- long dedication to supporting young talent. Tony Award-winner and five-time Tony Award nominee LAURA BENANTI is a highly celebrated stage and screen actress, with dozens of credits to her name. A native of Kinnelon, New Jersey, she won ’s Rising Star Award for her portrayal of Dolly Levi in her high school production of Hello, Dolly!, and from there, she went on to take Broadway by storm, making her Broadway debut at the young age of 18 as Maria in , opposite Richard Chamberlain. Benanti was most recently seen onstage in ’s hit Broadway play Meteor Shower, where she costarred alongside Amy Schumer and Keegan Michael Key. Other Broadway roles include Amalia Balash in , for which she was nominated for Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Drama League Awards. For , Laura was nominated for a Tony Award and won the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for her starring role in the Broadway production of Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and also starred in their Broadway production of Sarah Ruhl's In the Next Room or The Vibrator Play. Ms. Benanti earned the 2008 Tony Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical, a , and an Outer Critics Circle Award for her revelatory portrayal of Rose Lee in Gypsy opposite Patti LuPone. Other Broadway roles include The Wedding Singer, Nine (starring Antonio Banderas), her Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award-nominated performance of Cinderella in ’s , and her Tony-nominated turn in Swing!. Her television credits include a series regular roles on the Samantha Bee and Jason Jones produced TBS show “The Detour,” as as recurring and guest appearances CW’s “Supergirl,” ABC’s “Nashville” and “Eli Stone,” CBS’ “The Good Wife” and “Elementary,” Showtime’s “Nurse Jackie” and “The C,” NBC’s “The Sound of Music Live,” “The Playboy Club,” “Go On,” “Law and Order: SVU,” USA’s “Royal Pains,” and FX’s “Starved.” She frequently appears on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” in her comedic portrayal of First Lady Melania Trump. Other distinguished theater performances include ’s production of Christopher Durang’s Why Torture is Wrong and the People Who Love Them, Perdita in The Winter's Tale at the Williamstown Theatre Festival opposite Kate Burton, Anne in at the L.A. Opera opposite , Eileen in opposite , and Rosabella in , both for City Center Encores! Ms. Benanti has performed numerous concert engagements, both solo in her critically-lauded “Tales from Soprano Isle,” and with her mother, in their new duo show “The Story Goes On.” In September 2013, she released her debut album, “In Constant Search of the Right Kind of Attention: Live at 54 Below” on Broadway Records to rave reviews. She currently resides in Manhattan with her husband, Patrick, and daughter, Ella.

7 The Jimmy® Awards/the National High School Musical Theatre Awards™ (NHSMTA) is a celebration of outstanding achievement in vocal, dance and acting performance, developed to elevate the profile of in-school arts education across America, provide college scholarships and create pathways connecting promising young performers to the professional theatre industry. Each year, 100,000 teenagers at over 1,500 high schools participate in the program. Students who win lead actor and actress awards at their regional high school musical theatre awards competitions convene in for 9 days of private coaching and rehearsals at the New Studio on Broadway, NYU Tisch School of the Arts Department of Drama, in preparation for their Broadway stage debut at The Jimmy® Awards. The program was founded in 2009 by Pittsburgh CLO, Executive Producer Van Kaplan; Nederlander Alliances LLC, President James L. Nederlander; and Founding Executive Director Susan Lee.
