#BubbleTips N°7 - Les Foundations of the in 10 essentials Discover comic books - ep.1 by Bubble After exploring the basics of comics in our previous files (the great classics, genre comics, graphic novels, masters of humour, little-known or forgotten nuggets, etc.), we offer you a little comic book initiation. We're going after superheroes today! ? 7th tips for building your ideal library with the superhero foundation in 10 essentials Be careful, these 10 essentials list the main heroes in order of appearance & in the next folder (the new superhero icons in 10 essentials) you will find the absent ones from this list: Iron-Man, X-men, Wolverine, Wathchmen, Hellboy, Kick Ass etc... 1 - At once the oldest and most powerful of all superheroes, Superman is probably the iconic character par excellence from comics to movies to toys to T-shirts, it's impossible to go a week or so without seeing the mythical S in the course of our daily lives. Since its creation in 1933, its creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster have never ceased to develop this superman by offering him extraterrestrial origins, a morality stronger than his powers, a secret identity and outstanding acolytes. Shortly after, in 1941, the character appears in a cartoon by Fleischer Studios which gives him an aura and new powers that will make him the star character of the genre. Successive authors on the title will continue to give depth and thickness to the Man of Steel. So what's the great advice? ? 3 tips for attacking: It's not always easy to find your way around, so Urban comics, its French publisher, offers a collection Superman - Anthologie which gathers about twenty stories in chronological order, from several eras and authors to get an idea of its evolution. Afterwards you can try complete runs that don't require any prerequisites like Superman All★Star by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely who makes the hero live his last hours and forces him to give up Clark Kent's identity and make terrible decisions accompanied by F.Quitely's brilliant drawings. It's a little bit different from classic Superman, but you get to meet everything that matters in his world. Or Kingdom come from Mark Waid and Alex Ross who brings the Man of Steel out of retirement and reunites the to kick the new guys' asses. Superman builds a super-prison and rebels against this new order (Civil War will resume the same pattern a few years later). and which is being imaged by Marvel's most iconic illustrator Alex Ross. Or Superman Red Son by Mark Millar, Dave Johnson and Killian Plunkett, a uchrony where Superman's capsule spits up in Russia and he becomes the superman of communism and Lex Luthor the defender of America. 2 - BATMAN The second great superhero is not endowed with powers (exception among all those who will follow) and masked detective he will join the greatest and is among the most powerful heroes. Created by Bob Kane and in 1939, The Bat-Man is more like a Sherlock Holmes masked at the beginning and will evolve gradually. The Joker and Catwoman have been there almost from the beginning and our hero will gradually acquire the gadgets that made him a success; today it is impossible to imagine him without a batmobile, batcave or the help of Alfred the Butler attached to the Wayne family. Robin comes in fast, and the tone is closer to superheroic. He met other heroes, collaborated regularly with Superman, founded the Justice League of America, which brings together the most important superheroes, but it is after the reboot by and David Mazzucchelli Batman: Year One in the late 80s that he acquires the stature and aura he has today. So how's the tour of the batcave going? ? 4 tips for attacking: As with Clark Kent, Bruce Wayne's masked adventures have been the subject of a Batman - Anthologie to help you find your way with about fifteen stories chosen (you can read in parallel, the Joker's too.). Here we have one of the best badguy of all time !) Start with Batman: Year One by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli, which offers the foundations of the modern Batman while plunging it into the dark (and with one of the most innovative designers on the title). Batman - Un Long Halloween by Tim Sale and Jeph Loeb, who has the double advantage of presenting a police investigation and presenting all the bad guys of Gotham City in interrogation, guaranteed catch-up time. Tim Sale is a too rare cartoonist that we would like to see more often (the duo will do it again with Amère Victoire). And maybe The Killing Joke written by and drawn by where we discover a Batman on the verge of madness pushed by the Joker who had one of his worst ideas? 3 - THE SUBMARINER Among the oldest heroes of what will become , there is a strange character, a kind of anti-hero more than superhero who goes from being a powerful enemy to a complicated ally, but even stronger. Created in 1939, like Bat, by Bill Everett and Lloyd Jacquet, it is distinguished by its status as an enemy of heroes and also by its power to fly (before Superman who could only do superbonds at the beginning) which is a bit strange for someone who lives underwater, but never mind. He meets the Torch (first version, not those of the Fantastic 4) then . An enemy of the surface dwellers, he eventually rallied the camp of the heroes to fight against Nazism. Stan Lee takes the character back and gives him a more imposing stature and associates him with the Fantastic 4 before turning against the Avengers. From there he will alternate alliances with the biggest heroes and the biggest villains throughout his career. So how do we find our way below the surface? ? 2 tips and a disappointment to attack: Namor doesn't really have a title, you have to pick from the Fantastic 4, Captain America, X-men, New Avengers,... A nice exception however with Namor : Voyage au fond des mers which is a success both in terms of the script and the drawing and which could have been a good start but which has been out of print for several years without any planned re-release... In the available and recent episodes, we can read New Avengers which presents Namor among the illuminati (secret group of the most intelligent and powerful beings in the world) alongside Black Panther, Iron Man, Dr Strange, ... but is quite far from the original character. The best is to reread the year-by-year anthologies of the 4 Fantastiques. 4 - CAPTAIN AMERICA The first great hero of the Marvel team (which is not yet called like that) landed in 1940 in the middle of World War II under the pencils of Jack Kirby and Joe Simon who hit hard since the cover of this first issue shows Captain America nailing Aldolf Hitler to the ground with a punch. The super-soldier, a cheeky child who absorbs a serum that makes him almost invulnerable, was popular and then fell into oblivion rather quickly. It's only in the 60's that Stan Lee reintegrates the character in the Avengers, Cap' is found in a state of hibernation and will become the pillar of the Avengers and one of the most popular heroes. In 2006 his popularity explodes as he becomes the rebel hero and martyr of Civil War, he is not only one of the most powerful heroes, but he, symbol of America, rebels against Ironman, the government and goes underground in a fight for freedom. So how do you become a super soldier? ? 4 tips for attacking: To discover the original character, you can attack by the first of the chronological integrals (Captain America - L 'Intégrale, 1964-1966) even if the hero doesn't look like the one you may know in the movies. You can also read also Captain America: The Living Legend (and the sequels Captain America: Winter Murderer and Captain America: The Dream is Dead )by screenwriter Ed Brubaker who really modernized the character in a darker universe and worked on the character of Bucky who will become the Soldier of Winter. Captain America: The Sentinel of Liberty introduces the character after the events of September 11th and the title offers a more political and grounded in reality vision than the character's usual adventures. And of course Civil War, which presents a lot of characters and nods to the Marvel universe, but is well enough written to read independently. 5 - The guardian of the Earth, , took office in 1940 thanks to Bill Finger and his ring and lantern, , which allowed him to materialize almost everything with the strength of his mind. He will soon give way to , the most popular Green Lantern, as he receives his power from a dying alien who tells him about the and Jordan becomes the guardian of the Earth within this corporation. The Lantern universe is quite complicated with its different corporations, galactic codes and entities and the title has been known by many reboots and is not well known in France. So how do you recharge your lantern? ? 3 tips to attack: is the writer who had the most influence on the character and he reorganized his universe from top to bottom. Also starting with the integrals Geoff Johns presents Green Lantern (T1 to T3) remains a very good introduction. You can continue with Green lantern T1: from the same writer, closer to us Hal Jordan is no longer the Green Lantern, but the ring has been entrusted to his worst enemy. And my favourite, coming from the pre-Geoff Johns period, when Dennis O'Neil and sent Green Lantern and Green Arrow on the roads of deep America to meet the locals. With a realistic tone, the two heroes tackle the problems of drugs, racism or ecology in the mid-70s. The run detonates in the universe of the emerald hero, but it is probably one of the most successful comics in that it is connected to its time and it is rare that heroes care about what happens here and now. 6 - The Several characters have occupied or are occupying the costume of the Flash, some recognizable by their costumes, others wearing the costume of the previous one. We're not talking about one hero, we're talking about several superheroes who have crossed paths several times. Originally, created in 1940 by Gardner Fox and Harry Lampert, Jay Garrick was the Flash with the Steel Helmet. In 1956, Barry Allen became Flash after an accident and embodied the most famous version of the yellow lightning hero. The two versions will meet in a special Flash of Two Worlds story. Wally West and then Bart Allen will succeed each other in costume over the decades, but Barry Allen who returns to the forefront in Flash rebirth in 2009 and we learn that he is the origin of all Flash powers. The character's power is closely linked to time travel and the modification of matter, which explains so many round trips and modifications. Moreover this feature will be used several times in arcs mixing all the DC characters from Crisis on Infinite Earths to Flashpoint. So how do you start over super-fast? ? 4 tips to attack : As for the DC characters mentioned above, we always recommend the Flash Anthology anthology which gathers about fifteen stories in chronological order, from several eras, several Flashes to get an idea of its evolution and who's who. Then you can test Geoff Johns Presents Flash which regroups Johns' stories around Wally West following the disappearance of Barry Allen. A good transition before Allen's return. Flashpoint by Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert. A crossover featuring the entire DC universe where Flash (Barry Allen) changes the course of history by going back in time. This event opens the New 52 period. For those who wish to go back to their roots, Flash, the Legend of and Carmine Infantino takes up the origins of Barry Allen, with the slightly old shool side of the bad guys/intrigues of the 50s. 7 - In 1941 the writer and psychologist William Moulton Marston created the most famous superheroine under the pseudonym Charles Moulton and insisted on making her a feminist character at a time when female characters had little latitude. The Amazon soon joined the Justice Society of America, whose members included The Flash and Green Lantern, and then the Justice League alongside Batman and Superman. The title goes through several great periods, some of which are disconnected from the heroic universe, oscillating between espionage and mythology for the different personalities endorsed by Princess Diana (beware, no jokes about the possible bridges that could be made between the two princesses). DC comics initiated a wave of rewriting of these characters in the mid-80's and this title is relaunched and taken in hand by Greg Potter and George Pérez who lay the foundations of the current character. So which Diana do you dedicate yourself to? ? 4 tips to attack: As for all the characters published by Urban comics in France, there is a Wonder Woman Anthology. About fifteen stories in chronological order, from several eras and authors to get an idea of its evolution. Or maybe attack with the latest and most successful version of Wonder Woman Rebirth T1 where Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott rewrite the whole Amazon legend, keeping only the best sides of the last decades. Still by the same screenwriter the anthology Greg Rucka presents Wonder Woman contains some of the best stories of the character and is a very good gateway to this universe. For readers who want to go a little further, Wonder Woman: Gods and Mortals by George Perez and who is interested in the mythological counterpart of the character where the Amazon fights the god Ares. Also noteworthy is one of the main characters in Kingdom come with Superman, mentioned above. 8 - FANTASTIC FOUR The Fantastic Four, Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the and the Thing, emerge as the first group of superheroes to react to the success of the Batman-led Justice League at DC comics. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1961, they hold the longest running title and are one of the most important series in the history of Marvel. Under the impulse of Jack King of comics Kirby, it is in this series that many of the characters who are still among the most striking today will appear: Namor joins the team, Doom quickly imposes himself as one of the great villains Marvel, the Silver Surfer and Galactus the Devourer of Worlds appear, the Inhumans, the Black Panther, ... So how do we bend over backwards to advise you? ? 3 tips for attacking: The chronological anthologies (from Q1: Fantastic Four - L 'Intégrale, 1961-1962) are perfect to approach the FF universe. Contrary to other series that had different authors, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby were able to work for a very long time on this one, giving the first episodes a real coherence and a real interest to read them in continuity. The only drawback is that they are regularly sold out at the publisher's, and new editions have to be awaited.
