As Samuel Fielden was concluding his speech, Chicago Police Officers arrived and ordered the anarchists to end the meeting. As Fielden stepped down from the speakers stand a bomb was hurled into the ranks of officers and a riot ensued in which several police officers and civilians were killed. Although the bombthrower was never identified, eight anarchists were put on trial and found guilty of the murder of Chicago Police Officer Mathias J. Degan. Given their political views it would have been difficult for them to receive a fair trial anywhere in the United States. The media convicted them in print long before the trial began and inflamed the passions and prejudices of the public.

    Introduction a work-in-progress / compiled by Steven L. Isoardi This timeline records appearances, primarily musical, but not exclusively, by Horace Tapscott, and is a work-in-progress. It has been compiled using public records, such as newspaper ads, articles, leaflets, etc., but most importantly the tape and ephemera collection in the Horace Tapscott Archive. Over the years, the diligent preservation work by the brothers and sisters of UGMA/UGMAA, resulted in tape recordings of hundreds of performances and rehearsals from 1960 to Horace’s passing on 27 February 1999. In 2002, with the assistance of Michael Dett Wilcots, UGMAA archivist and Horace’s son-in-law, I catalogued that collection, then housed in Horace’s garage/studio. Until the early 1980s, recordings were made on reel-to-reel tapes. On many of those, the UGMA/UGMAA personnel responsible penned notes on the tape boxes, usually location, date, personnel, and compositions performed. Occasionally, other commentary was added. When relevant, these are included under the tag “Note”. This collection provides the main source in documenting the musical history of the movement in those years, including such items as the various name changes the organization went through until finally settling on the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra (PAPA) and the Union of God’s Musicians and Artists Ascension (UGMAA) in the early 1970s. While this information is invaluable, it is far from complete. Not all musicians and compositions are listed in some instances, but what information exists, is provided. With the shift to cassette tapes in the early 1980s, much of the space for written commentary on the reel-to-reel boxes was lost, and consequently information on the cassettte tape containers is minimal or non-existent.

As we conclude the 2016-2017 year for the California Copyright Conference we are proud to finish with “An Evening With” interview featuring two members of one of the most dynamic and spectacular bands of all time Earth, Wind & Fire. Founded in the early ‘70’s and still performing and creating today, Ralph Johnson and Verdine White have an amazing story to share! The legacy of the band’s performances are matched only by their timeless and inspiring songs! The music of Earth, Wind & Fire has been the soundtrack for so many, and their continued musical excellence continues to satisfy through their wonderful songs of love, hope and inspiration. I’d like to thank my co-moderator Ronny Schiff (who you will find out, worked with the band) for lending her expertise and insights to what I believe you will find to be a wonderful evening with two truly amazing musical legends!
