Smith (1945) made a partial attempt to straighten .the tangle, but writers seem still to adhere to earlier systems of classification, partly on account of Smith's work not being accessible as ready reference. Since 1945 some more literature has come out on the taxonomy of these fishes, and the present revision is therefore undertaken in order to help to avoid continuance of improper usage and to give an up-to-date classification of the fishes belonging to Hamilton's division Chela, which is now recognised as a distinct genus of the subfamily Abramidinae of the family Cyprinidae. HISTORICAL REsUME Under the division Chela of the genns Cyprinus, Hamilton described a heterogenons assemblage of seven species. Armbruster1 Abstract Background: Cypriniformes (minnows, carps, loaches, and suckers) is the largest group of freshwater fishes in the world (~4300 described species). Despite much attention, previous attempts to elucidate relationships using molecular and morphological characters have been incongruent. In this study we present the first phylogenomic analysis using anchored hybrid enrichment for 172 taxa to represent the order (plus three out-group taxa), which is the largest dataset for the order to date (219 loci, 315,288 bp, average locus length of 1011 bp). Results: Concatenation analysis establishes a robust tree with 97 % of nodes at 100 % bootstrap support. Species tree analysis was highly congruent with the concatenation analysis with only two major differences: monophyly of Cobitoidei and placement of Danionidae. Conclusions: Most major clades obtained in prior molecular studies were validated as monophyletic, and we provide robust resolution for the relationships among these clades for the first time. These relationships can be used as a framework for addressing a variety of evolutionary questions (e.g. phylogeography, polyploidization, diversification, trait evolution, comparative genomics) for which Cypriniformes is ideally suited. ALLEN Australian Museum, Sydney, Australia Currently over 4000 species of fishes are known from Australia. An analysis ofdistribution patterns of 3800 species is presented. Over 20% of the species are endemic to Australia, with endemic species occuiring primarily in southern Australia. There is also a small component of the fauna which is found only in the southwestern Pacific (New Caledonia, Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island and New Zealand). The majority of the other species are widely distributed in the western Pacific Ocean. South Pacific Commission, Nouméa, New Caledonia The Oceanic Fisheries Programme of the South Pacific Commission is currently pursuing a research project on age and growth of two tropical tuna species, yellowfm tuna (Thunnus albacares) and bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus). The daily periodicity of microincrements forrned with the sagittal otoliths of these two spceies has been validated by oxytetracycline marking in previous studies. These validation studies have come from fishes within three regions of the Pacific (eastem, central and western tropical Pacific). Otolith microincrements are counted along transverse section with a light microscope. -

Six distinct species are recognized. Keys, descriptions and illustrations of the species are presented. Morphological differences between and within all six species are clarified. Twenty-two morphometric characters and ten meristic characters were examined, and 14 morphometric and nine meristic characters were found to differ amongst the six species. Anal-fin ray numbers of O. cellebensis, O. javanicus, O. dancena, O. minutillus, O. latipes and O. mekongensis were 22, 23, 24, 19, 18 and 15, respectively. These differences suggest that the six species may be reproductively isolated from each other. Stiphodon sapphirinus, a new species of freshwater goby from New Caledonia (Gobioidei: Sicydiinae) by Ronald E. WATSON (1), Philippe KEITH (2) & Gérard MARQUET (3) ABSTRACT. - Stiphodon sapphirinus, new species, is described on the basis of material collected from New Caledonia. It is distinguished from all other congeners in having nine segmented rays in the second dorsal fin, an elongate and filamen- tous fourth dorsal spine that lacks membranous tissue, usually 14 pectoral rays, 31-51 fine tricuspid premaxillary teeth, and sexual differences related to symphyseal teeth (0-2 small teeth in females vs 1-4 stout teeth in males), predorsal midline (usually absent in males and conspicuous in females), scales in transverse forward series, distribution of belly scales (absent in males and cycloid scales present in females) and colour pattern (males with a blue head and cobalt blue sides). RÉSUMÉ. - Stiphodon sapphirinus, une espèce nouvelle de gobie d’eau douce de Nouvelle-Calédonie (Gobioidei: Sicy- diinae). Stiphodon sapphirinus, espèce nouvelle, est décrite à partir de matériel collecté en Nouvelle-Calédonie. Il se distingue des autres espèces du genre en ayant neuf rayons segmentés dans la seconde nageoire dorsale, une première dorsale avec un quatrième rayon long, filamenteux et sans membrane, 14 rayons à la nageoire pectorale, 31 à 51 dents prémaxillaires tricuspides, 0 à 2 petites dents symphyséales chez les femelles et 1 à 4 chez les mâles, des écailles cycloïdes dans la région prédorsale (0-6 pour les mâles et 0-12 pour les femelles) et plus d’écailles en série transverse postérieure. La répartition des écailles sur le ventre présente un dimorphisme sexuel : les mâles sont souvent sans écailles tandis que les femelles possè- dent des écailles cycloïdes. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A new cyprinid fish, Metzia bounthobi, is described on the basis of 18 specimens (including 10 specimens in type series) from the Mekong River basin in Phongsaly and Luang Prabang Provinces, northern Laos. The species is distinguished from congeners by having the following diagnostic traits: 18–20 branched anal-fin rays (vs. 10–18 in the others); 49–55 lateral-line scale rows (vs. 35–48); 33–36 predorsal scale rows (vs. 15–20); 20–22 circumpeduncular scale rows (vs. 14–18); 8–10 gill rakers on outer surface of first gill arch (vs. 12–18). The new species also resembles species of Hemic- ulterella, Ischikauia and at least some species of Anabarilius, in sharing a sharp keel developed only between the base of the pelvic fin and anus, soft last unbranched dorsal-fin ray, and air bladder composed of two chambers; however, M. -

This is the first record of this species of goby from Japan; it was for- merly regarded as endemic to southern China (Hainan and Guangdong Provinces). Stiphodon multisquamus is very rare on Okinawa Island and may have arrived as a result of transport of pelagic larvae by ocean currents.
