Talking Up Our Products With the weekly influx of new roleplaying titles, it’s almost impossible to keep track of every product in every RPG line in the adventure games industry. To help you organize our titles and to aid customers in finding information about their favorite products, we’ve designed a set of point-of-purchase dividers. These hard-plastic cards are much like the category dividers often used in music stores, but they’re specially designed as a marketing tool for hobby stores. Each card features the name of one of our RPG lines printed prominently at the top, and goes on to give basic information on the mechanics and setting of the game, special features that distinguish it from other RPGs, and the most popular and useful supplements available. The dividers promote the sale of backlist items as well as new products, since they help customers identify the titles they need most and remind buyers to keep them in stock. Our dividers can be placed in many ways. These are just a few of the ideas we’ve come up with: •A divider can be placed inside the front cover or behind the newest release in a line if the book is displayed full-face on a tilted backboard or book prop. Since the cards 1 are 11 /2 inches tall, the line’s title will be visible within or in back of the book. When a customer picks the RPG up to page through it, the informational text is uncovered. The card also works as a restocking reminder when the book sells. -

PLAYING THE GREAT WAR Giaime Alonge & Riccardo Fassone985 (University of Turin, Italy) World War One during analog wargame’s golden age Game scholar Stewart Woods divides board games in three main categories. 1) Classical games, such as Chess or Checkers -very old games, so old that they have no author, and therefore are not copyrighted. 2) Mass-market games such as Monopoly (1933) or Scrabble (1935). 3) Hobby games- niche games such as Dungeons & Dragons (1974) or Magic: The Gathering (1993), that are enjoyed by relatively small, but highly devoted groups of players986. Wargame is one of the thinnest niches in the universe of hobby games. A wargame is a «realistic» simulation of warfare. We will shortly address the question of what we mean by «realistic», but before that, we must make another premise. In this paper, by «wargame» we will only mean recreational simulations. We will not consider the professional simulations that staff officers of many armies and navies around the globe regularly hold in order to study possible scenarios of war.987 It is a practice that was introduced in the early nineteenth century, in Prussia, where generals started to prepare their future campaigns with a «game» called Kriegsspiel988. -

Frank Chadwick, Ran the Illinois State University Strategic Games Club
Rich Banner Rich Banner, with his friend (and later my friend) Frank Chadwick, ran the Illinois State University Strategic Games Club. They shared an interest in wargames, which at the time meant Avalon Hill boxed games and Simulations Publications Inc. esoteric military history games. I had plenty of time and I spent a lot of it playing games with these newfound friends in the Student Union. Rich wrangled a grant from student club funding for a custom print run of blank hex sheets. That requires some explaining: the hexagon pattern is like the square grid for a chess board, but more adapted to the movement of simulated military units over terrain. They are the foundation of modern wargames. That grant enabled about eight of us to design our own games with markers and pens. My very first game design was initially drawn on one of those custom sheets. I would not be a game designer if Rich hadn’t gotten that grant. Later, Rich (and Frank) proposed a university innovation project: SIMRaD Simulations Research and Design, dedicated to designing and placing educational games in the classroom. When it was funded, they managed the project, found sympathetic professors, and began the process of making the effort successful. It lasted for almost two years. As that project ended, Rich and Frank proposed creating a company to publish games, specifically their own monster board wargame of World War II, and they invited me to join them. Rich’s role was Art Director. His knowledge of the graphic arts, and his talents at getting things done were substantial contributions to the success of this newly formed Game Designers’ Workshop. -

The hobby known as “wargaming” has many facets to it- some of us play to recreate a historical battle or futuristic narrative. Others enjoy painting, building, and collecting terrain along with the process taking that from start to finish. And then there are those who enjoy wargaming from the competitive standpoint of winning in a tournament or gaming event such as a convention. For many the idea of playing competitively vs. enjoying a narrative game seems to be at odds, when really they are an extension of the hobby that is there to enjoy if you are ready for it. Participating in a competitive event EX. a tournament WILL make you a better play for the experience, it will expose you to a new gaming environment and open up new hobby opportunities even if it is not your main reason for wargaming. We are going to talk a little about this in this PDF, as I believe it is an important experience to have in the hobby, but primarily we are going to focus on how to WIN in a competitive setting. Some of us are competitive by nature, and truly it is an exhilarating experience to play a number of games in a tournament- hard fought, well won, to then be called up to the front and be acknowledged by your peers for your tactical winnings. There is a kind of validation in that- all the time spent building, playing, and learning. As the reader I don’t know what has called you to glory, or why you are now looking to compete, but I do know that you want to win and in this 2 | P a g e www.wargamerfritz.com guide we are going to explore the strategies and training outlines to learn to give you the greatest chance of winning. -
