For a number of years Reisswitz’s father has fought battles with friends using blocks on a sand-table. Reisswitz has come up with the innovative idea of translating his father’s game to large scale maps using small blocks with standard military symbols and a scientific set of rules that enable the movement and combat of formations to be reproduced with great precision. Reisswitz’ rules were written to enable a Blue Prussian Corps, Division or Brigade to pitched against a similar Red Prussian Corps or Division, on large scale maps, moderated by an umpire and assistants. -

PanzerBlitz was the first wargame I owned and I have great nostalgic feel for the game. At times it has sat on my shelf un- played for long but I come back to it now and then. The game has an elegant simplicity and is very good game of positioning and maneuver. But I have always been bothered that nuanced differences exist between PanzerBlitz and Panzer Leader; and I don’t like having to make the mental leap each time I change games. Also I have never really liked the lack of Indirect Fire ability in PB but don’t like the lethality and record keeping of those rules in PL. So I set about consolidating the two rule books into one, while integrating many of the excellent rule changes done by Mr. Byron Henderson. For a more detailed look at how I set about doing this consolidation and why I made certain decisions, please read the Consolidator’s notes at the end of the rules. This is my first endeavor at doing such a rules consolidation. I hope I have been successful. I ask the gaming community to take some time to play with these rules as written and to provide feedback to me. At some time down the road, I will take another look and see if your thoughts and suggestions should be incorporated. -

PLAYING THE GREAT WAR Giaime Alonge & Riccardo Fassone985 (University of Turin, Italy) World War One during analog wargame’s golden age Game scholar Stewart Woods divides board games in three main categories. 1) Classical games, such as Chess or Checkers -very old games, so old that they have no author, and therefore are not copyrighted. 2) Mass-market games such as Monopoly (1933) or Scrabble (1935). 3) Hobby games- niche games such as Dungeons & Dragons (1974) or Magic: The Gathering (1993), that are enjoyed by relatively small, but highly devoted groups of players986. Wargame is one of the thinnest niches in the universe of hobby games. A wargame is a «realistic» simulation of warfare. We will shortly address the question of what we mean by «realistic», but before that, we must make another premise. In this paper, by «wargame» we will only mean recreational simulations. We will not consider the professional simulations that staff officers of many armies and navies around the globe regularly hold in order to study possible scenarios of war.987 It is a practice that was introduced in the early nineteenth century, in Prussia, where generals started to prepare their future campaigns with a «game» called Kriegsspiel988. -

As such they present an 12 excellent case study for an analysis of war through non-military 13 narratives. This article examines a sample of sets and figures produced 14 during the ‘golden age’ of toy soldiers, so as to ascertain how these 15 16 artefacts related to military developments and what light they can shed 17 on societal responses to conflict in this period. The figures and sets under 18 discussion are drawn from the catalogues of the major British and 19 German manufacturers of the period and are contextualised by the 20 21 activities of the companies that produced them. This focus enables the 22 article to compare and contrast various approaches to these artefacts 23 and to conclude on how toy soldier production in this period became 24 embroiled in the wider political and military conflict between the British 25 and German empires. -
