Biography Captain S.L ALLI ED MARITIM E COMMAND Biography Captain S.L. (Sim) Schot Royal Netherlands Navy Commander Task Force (CTG) Sim Schot was born in 1963 in Rotterdam in the Netherlands. He started his naval career as a midshipman at the Royal Netherlands Naval College in 1982. He was promoted to the rank of sub-lieutenant in 1985. He spent his internship on board the frigates HNLMS Callenburgh and HNLMS Abraham Crijnssen. From 1987 to 1988 he studied at the University of Delft (Information Technology) and onwards became a watch keeping officer on the frigate HNLMS De Ruyter until the end of 1989. In this period De Ruyter participated in several major Nato Exercises. In January 1991 he graduated from the Principle Warfare Officers course as a specialist in gunnery and air defence. He subsequently served as an Air Defence Officer on board the frigate HNLMS De Ruyter until July 1993. In this period HNLMS De Ruyter participated in STANAVFORLANT and during Operation Sharp Guard in the Adriatic. In December 1995 he was appointed Head of Operations of the air defence frigate HNLMS Jacob van Heemskerck. He assumed command of the mine hunter HNLMS Schiedam in June 1996. From July 1997 until July 2000 he was appointed to the Royal Navy School of Operations at HMS Dryad. As an instructor of the PWO Course he was responsible for the Surface Warfare training. During these three years he lived with his family in Southwick, Hampshire. Following his appointment in the UK he worked as staff officer operations within the Netherlands Task Group staff for two years. He was deployed for 3 months as liaison officer on board USS Theodore Roosevelt and USS John C Stennis in the Indian Ocean during Operation Enduring Freedom. He completed the Advanced Command & Staff Course in 2003 and subsequently served in the Navy Staff in The Hague. In April 2004 he took command of the multi-purpose frigate HNLMS Van Amstel until Feb 2006. During his command HNLMS Van Amstel completed a work-up period, deployed to the Mediterranean Sea for 4 months, deployed to the Caribbean for 4 months and was involved in the disaster relief operation near New Orleans in the aftermath of the hurricane Katrina. From 2006 to 2010 he served as Programming Officer and Senior Policy Adviser for the Commander-in-Chief RNLN in Den Helder. From Nov 2009 until Mar 2010 he was deployed as Chief of Staff at the EU Force Head Quarter under Italian command on board ITS Etna during Operation Atalanta. From 2010 until 2013 he was director of the joint Advanced Command & Staff Course at the Netherlands Defence College. From Nov 2013 until Mar 2014 he was again deployed as Chief of Staff at the EU Force Head Quarter, this time under French command on board FS Siroco. Following this tour he was appointed as director Navy Command Headquarters in Den Helder. He took command of Joint Support Ship HNLMS Karel Doorman in February 2016. Sim lives in Alkmaar in The Netherlands and has a daughter and a son. His hobbies include fitness and scuba diving. .

    PART THREE PORTSMOUTH DOCKYARD IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY1 3.1 INTRODUCTION The twentieth century topography of Portsmouth Dockyard can be related first to the geology and geography of Portsea Island and secondly to the technological development of warships and their need for appropriately sized and furnished docks and basins. In 2013, Portsmouth Naval Base covered 300 acres of land, with 62 acres of basin, 17 dry docks and locks, 900 buildings and 3 miles of waterfront (Bannister, 10 June 2013a). The Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust (Heritage Area) footprint is 11.25 acres (4.56 hectares) which equates to 4.23% of the land area of the Naval Base or 3.5% of the total Naval Base footprint including the Basins (Duncan, 2013). From 8 or 9 acres in 1520–40 (Oppenheim, 1988, pp. 88-9), the dockyard was increased to 10 acres in 1658, to 95 acres in 1790, and gained 20 acres in 1843 for the steam basin and 180 acres by 1865 for the 1867 extension (Colson, 1881, p. 118). Surveyor Sir Baldwin Wake Walker warned the Admiralty in 1855 and again in 1858 that the harbour mouth needed dredging, as those [ships] of the largest Class could not in the present state of its Channel go out of Harbour, even in the event of a Blockade, in a condition to meet the Enemy, inasmuch as the insufficiency of Water renders it impossible for them to go out of Harbour with all their Guns, Coals, Ammunition and Stores on board. He noted further in 1858 that the harbour itself “is so blocked up by mud that there is barely sufficient space to moor the comparatively small Force at present there,” urging annual dredging to allow the larger current ships to moor there.

    Admiral Rob BAUER Chairman of the NATO Military Committee Netherlands Admiral Rob Bauer (Royal Netherlands Navy) is the 33rd Chair of the Military Committee of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). As the Military Adviser to the Secretary General and the North Atlantic Council, Admiral Bauer is NATO’s most senior military officer. He is the conduit through which advice from NATO’s 30 Chiefs of Defence is presented to the political decision-making bodies; and guidance and directives are issued to the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Supreme Allied Commander Transformation and the Director General of the International Military Staff. ‘Expect the unexpected’ is for Admiral Bauer a personal mantra, as well as a sacred principle for every military force. In this time of political power shifts and increasingly complex security threats, he firmly believes that the strength of the North Atlantic Alliance lies in its cohesion. Admiral Bauer strives to be a catalyst between NATO’s military leaders, and unifying north, south, east and west, large and small. Rob Bauer (Amsterdam, 1962) was commissioned as an officer in the Royal Netherlands Navy in 1984. From 2005 until 2007, Bauer commanded the Air Defence and Command Frigate HNLMS De Ruyter. His command included a deployment in the Mediterranean with the Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 as part of the NATO Response Force (Operation Active Endeavour). Late 2006, Bauer was deployed to Bahrain as Deputy Commander of Task Force 150 (Operation Enduring Freedom). In 2010 and 2011, he held command of the Landing Platform Dock HNLMS Johan de Witt. As Director of Plans (2012-2015), Bauer was responsible for directing strategies relating to the future of Defence, operational policy and innovation, and the organization and structure of the armed forces as a whole, including the creation of the new Defence Cyber Command.

John Poulton Williams, RN (1784-1810) The life and career of a Naval Officer John Poulton Williams a Naval Officer, who fought at the Battle of Trafalgar, was from HM Royal Docks in Plymouth, Devon. Born on 8 April 1784 to John Hoyle Williams, Master Shipwright, and his wife Elizabeth. The eldest of their three sons, all of whom served HM Royal Navy as officers. John was just eight years old when he first joined HMS Cumberland as a Captain’s servant. Through the records we will follow his career and the lives of his family. FAMILY BACKGROUND John grew up in the ancient manor of Stoke Damerel which incorporated HM Dockyard. Devonport began with a single stone dock in 1691 to receive His Majesty's ships of war. The workmen tired of their daily trek from Plymouth demanded houses be built within walking distance of the Dockyard and this is how the township evolved and became known as Plymouth Dock. By 1820, with the addition of army barracks and surrounded with defensive fortifications the residents demanded their own identity. On 1st January 1824, with Royal approval, the town was renamed Devonport, the port of Devon. In 1914 it was incorporated into the City of Plymouth. John’s father, John Hoyle Williams (1733 - 1816) of Plymouth Dock, is described in apprenticeship records as a Master Shipwright. By the second half of 18th century some 60% or more of all craftsman shipwrights in Great Britain were Crown employees in the Royal Dockyards of Deptford, Woolwich, Sheerness, Chatham, Portsmouth, and Plymouth.

    1 You Engage and Then You See Willem G. J. Remmelink Leiden, 24 September 2018 Much has been said and written about the Battle of the Java Sea. For foreign readers, however, a comprehensive account from the Japanese side has been lacking until now. As we all know, the battle was a major victory for the Imperial Japanese Navy. Nevertheless, the official communiqué from Imperial General Headquarters was remarkably terse. The lack of any detail, except for the explicit mention of the length of the battle, shows that the high command of the Navy was non-plussed, if not dismayed, by the length of this almost eight- hour long battle. Decisive battles were not supposed to last that long. It is something that also struck Samuel Morison, the first western historian of the battle.1 “That [the battle] lasted so long was,” in his eyes, “due to Admiral Doorman’s stubborn determination and the admirable manner in which men of the three Allied Navies under his command fought and fought until they could fight no more.” Without taking anything away from the valor and determination of Doorman and his men, we now know that there were other factors that crucially determined the length of this battle. Like all navies in the interbellum years, the Japanese Navy was obsessed with the idea of a decisive battle that would be decided in a matter of minutes because of the great progress made in gun and torpedo fire. This led to a basic naval doctrine that was wedded to big guns and capital ships.
