At our junior grassroots level, the highlight was the establishment of our Saturday mini-ball competition with 26 teams and 200 participants ranging from under 8’s to under 12’s. These were by far and away, new players to basketball and sourced from local schools through the hard work of Daniel Fisher, Darlene Saxby and other volunteers who gave so much of their time. It was an exceptional effort by all of those involved. The challenge for our Association now, is to retain these new players, transition them through our development programs such as Aussie Hoops , Learn to Play, Pink Ball, Dolphin League and Future Sharks, into our domestic competitions and then into our representative program. We have recognised that to be successful, we need to sustain this effort and build upon this in the years to come. In 2018 our Association also had increased success with both our Junior and Senior representative programs. With our juniors, we had 7 of our 16 teams make semi-finals, 3 teams made the grand final and our 18M4 won their competition. Our 12B1 team played at the NSW State Championships and ending up in 2nd place. With our senior representative program, our Championship women made the grand final only to lose to a superb Norths squad. Chelsea Schweers was named the MVP and Maddie Norris Youth Players of the Year with both named in the All Star 5. Also, our Division 1 Men made the Grand Final only to lose to a quality St George team in a tightly fought game. Our Head Coach Simon Gleeson was named Coach of the Year and our own Reece Cragie MVP along with All Star 5 Forward. It was an exceptional result for both teams. In terms of outstanding individual achievements of our players, there were many but I mention in particular the following: Shyla Heal played for Australia at the under 17 World Cup coming away with the Bronze medal. Shyla was selected in the All Star 5; Maddie Norris was selected by the Sydney Uni Flames development squad and also won the 3-point shootout at the Uni Hustle Lachlan Hutchinson was selected in the Sydney Kings development squad; Mia Bruce, Jordyn Dewhurst, Emily Garland, Tyrese Proctor, Izac Taylor were all selected in the State Performance Program (SPP); and Gabriella Nancarrow, Jackson Ezbery, Mark Tennant, Oliver Smith, Aislinn Walker, Neve Bruce, Jesse Edwards and Jesse Garabedian were selected in the Developing Athletes Program (DAP); an Brendan Winstanley and Ethan Laudato were selected as reserves in the NSW under 20’s state team. I wish to thank all of our sponsors and especially our major sponsor, The Tradies for their continuing support. In 2019, our aim is to develop other partnerships with businesses and use the income to effect improvements to our facility. Thank you to all our Sharks Families , our many volunteers, stadium staff and my fellow Board members for your support in 2018. Tony Laarakkers President Page 6 2018 ASSOCIATION MANAGERS REPORT 2018 was an energy filled year for the Association . The focus for the year was again on building our grass roots numbers, in particular female participation. The “I Am a Girl “committee was formed under the leadership of our highly motivated volunteer Representative coach, Darlene Saxby. The first event for the year was a very successful ,Girls Only 3x3 Gala day which introduced at least 50 girls to the sport, several of which continued in our basketball programs throughout the year. In support of the goals to lift the profile of female participation in our sport and to improve the competitiveness of our Representative teams, the Board appointed Shane Heal as Head Coach of the Women’s program. The Board also supported having a female import in our Championship Women’s team. As part of his agreement, Shane ran Coach the Coach training sessions for all of our representative coaches and established his Elite Training Academy for our junior players. With the support of Shane, who provided employment for our import, Chelsie Schweers, an experienced and talented American player was brought in to complement the talents of our young Sharks team. The investment in the import paid off and the young team progressed to the Grand finals of the Waratah League under Chelsea’s leadership. With extra support from uniform sponsors, Soul Sports and an additional grant over three years from our major sponsor, Tradies we were able to introduce a new playing uniform for all of our Representative Teams in 2018 In May, the Board engaged the consultancy services of Daniel Fischer from Step Up Basketball. Daniel came to us with a solid reputation for club building and player development and his role here was to help the Development Manager build numbers in our development programs and at the same time improve the quality of the programs offered. Daniel’s first task was to reach out to the basketball community to establish a Club Building Committee and the “I am a Girl “Committee members, quickly became the backbone of this committee. Very quickly ,4 new school based clubs were formed and these clubs entered teams in to our first ever Saturday Miniball competition. Daniel also introduced Rep Ready Camps for aspiring representative players to prepare them for trials and also introduced the Focus groups program. This program identifies and runs activities for potential talented players for the future. In keeping with our goals to improve and maintain the facility the Association secured two government grants . The first grant provided a state of the art sound system to replace our crackly, antiquated system and the second grant provided for the continued replacement of our seating and scoreboards. A new scoreboard for court 2 and additional bench seating were purchased in 2018 with the remaining grandstands and Court 3 scoreboard ordered for 2019. Page 7 Following several years of persistence from our sponsor, Bubba Gump Pest Control ,the stadium finally became free of its ongoing possum problem.
