    2018-19 WNBL Semi-final 1 v FRIDAY 25 JANUARY 6 PM DOORS OPEN 7 PM TIP-OFF AIS ARENA Round 15 Recap The final round of the regular season turned out to be more of a thriller than expected, with three out of the top four teams having to go to overtime. For the UC Capitals, a double overtime put the team’s winning streak at risk as Bendigo Spirit put everything on the line for the final game of WNBL19. But Marianna Tolo (27 points, 10 rebounds) and Kelsey Griffin (24 points, 20 rebounds stepped up to get the UC Capitals over the line. UC Capitals head coach, Paul Goriss, said that the close call was a great way to prepare the team for finals. “We haven’t been that behind in the last ten weeks, so having a game where we had to fight harder than what we’ve been used to was great. Having a double overtime game is something we hadn’t had either, so there were great learning outcomes for us heading into finals,” said Goriss. The match against Bendigo was significant in other ways for UC Capitals star, Kelly Wilson, who received her WNBL life membership. Wilson has made her mark in the 2018/19 WNBL season, climbing up to sixth on the all-time games played list and third for all-time assists. Third and fourth place was also determined after a thrilling match between the Perth Lynx and Adelaide Lightning. As the Lynx fell one point short of a win after going to overtime, they have fallen to fourth on the ladder and will therefore be the UC Capitals’ opponent for the semi-finals.

Every athlete and coach that is prepared to strive to achieve their best is valuable to our club’s success and we believe our club is ideally positioned to offer our athletes not only a pathway to top level basketball but also life long education and values. STARplex is home to “Central Districts Lions Basketball Club” The club looks to field a number of boys and girls teams/divisions in all age groups being: Juniors: Under 10 Under 12 Under 14 Under 16 Under 18 Under 20 Seniors: ABA DIV 2 DIV3 DIV 4 DIV 5 If a player wishes to join the club, contact in the first instance should be made with the Junior Coaching Director, Andrew Jantke, on 0410 759 280. All new players to the Club are required to complete a Intent to Play Form. If you are a member of another club, a clearance will need to be sought from that club. Please speak to the Club Secretary about a clearance if necessary. If a player is on a Required Players List of another club, you need to inform the Club Administration Officer or Club Secretary immediately.     Shawn Redhage

    Shawn Redhage Captain of the Perth Wildcats Born in Florida Shawn grew up in Nebraska USA and is now a naturalised Australian professional basketball player. He currently plays for Perth Wildcats in the Australian National Basketball League and has been captain of the team since 2009. He is one of the top players in the Australian NBL and was voted into the Top Five Most Valuable Players List in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. In the United States, Shawn received the Nebraska Player of the Year Award in 1998/99 after a stunning senior year with Nebraska State High School. After high school, Shawn began studying and playing for Arizona State University and helped lead the team to their 4th NCAA tournament appearance in the last 30 years and graduated with honors in Construction Management. Shawn became a professional basketball player in 2004 when he moved to Australia and played in the SEABL for the NW Tasmania Thunder. He was instrumental in SEABL’s championship and was awarded MVP (Most Valuable Player) honours in the League and Club. He began his NBL career in September 2004 with the New Zealand Breakers but was released mid-season after playing only 13 games, when the Breakers decided to sign veteran import Marcus Timmons. Shawn returned to SEABL to play for Bendigo Braves after his departure from the Breakers. In his time with the Braves he led them to the National Championship while claiming his second league MVP award averaging a league best average of 35 points per game. Shawn joined the Perth Wildcats in 2005, where he instantly made an impact and earned the nickname of The Scoring Machine on his way to finishing second for the league MVP award.

WE’VE LAUNCHED A NEW PUBLIC-FACING BRAND - SPORT AUSTRALIA – WITH A RENEWED VISION FOR AUSTRALIA TO BE THE WORLD’S MOST ACTIVE SPORTING NATION, KNOWN FOR ITS INTEGRITY, SPORTING SUCCESS AND WORLD-LEADING SPORTS INDUSTRY. This aligns with the Australian Government’s long-term vision for sport in this country, outlined in Sport 2030, released in August 2018 by Minister for Sport Bridget McKenzie. Sport Australia will be central to delivering the priorities outlined in this national sport plan. At the fundamental level, Sport Australia’s focus will be on getting Australians moving through sport and, more broadly, physical activity. We want to inspire and activating people across every age, race, gender, cultural background and physical ability. We will continue to build partnerships in the health and education sectors to ensure physical activity is a confidence in what our athletes stand for and how they carry national priority.
