POETS OF THE FALL John Dee | Søndag 17. mars Helsinki-bandet Poets of the Fall har i 15 år gledet fansen med sin miks av post-grunge, indie og symfonisk rock – og er straks aktuelle med sitt nye album «Ultraviolet» og påfølgende turné. Marko, Olli, Captain Jaska, Jani og Jari startet på sitt musikalske eventyr i 2003. Huhtikuu 2017 Tutkielma käsittelee digitaalisen pelin Alan Wake (2010) sisältämien kertovien tekstien tapaa hyödyntää erilaisia lajiperinteitä ja luoda niiden kautta intermediaalisia illuusioita. Päämää- ränäni on kartoittaa, millaisia kirjallisuudelle, elokuvalle ja peleille ominaisia lajiperinteitä nämä tekstit yhdistelevät. Selvitän myös, kuinka useiden eri mediumien lajiperinteet toimi- vat limittäin ja vaikuttavat tekstien tulkintaan. Tarkastelen lopuksi myös digitaalisen pelin kertovien tekstien luonnetta peilaamalla niitä kirjallisuuden lajiteoriaan. Signed ____________________ (Keith Hennigan) Date ____________________ (July 2018) Summary The aim of this thesis is to research and propose possible methods and models for the creation and dissemination of what shall be defined as liquid music recordings. This will result in the establishment of a sound theoretical basis for the creation of such works, with practical demonstrations provided to showcase the proposed approach and methodology. It was initially intended that this thesis would focus on the creation of one liquid music authoring system or standard. However, after researching the field, it is apparent that the creation of a single liquid system or format is of little import or benefit. A number of previous efforts have been made, each offering only one viewpoint on the compositional paradigm of liquid music and necessarily limited in some way. What is needed for the field is a broader overview. For example, the proposition of the BRONZE format (see Chapter Three) as a new format for music, though laudable, falls short due to the nature of the work: offering only a single inherent style of generative music, this programming imparts a limited aesthetic onto any musical work written for it.

Music within Finland’s Computer and Video Game Industry: Global Opportunities for Local Musicians This paper explores the current Finnish computer and video games industry, and in particular its musical component, highlighting key facts and suggesting possible future research as to creative and business opportunities for musicians. In the past decade, the Finnish game industry has grown significantly, largely, though not exclusively due to the global success of Remedy Entertainment, producer of the internationally acclaimed Max Payne and Alan Wake series’, and Rovio Entertainment, creator of the Angry Birds series, three of whose games figure amongt the top ten best-selling iPhone apps of all time¹. This statistic does not cover games alone, but includes all applications. These companies’sales are measured in the millions: the original Max Payne sold over four million copies worldwide². While Max Payne and Alan Wake franchises range in price from 10 to 100 € for select special editions, Rovio’s Angry Birds applications are generally priced at 0.99 US $. Rovio’s 2011 annual report is impressive: Rovio’s game offerings in 2011 consisted of three games, all based on the Angry Birds characters: Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons, and Angry Birds Rio. The games are available as both free and paid versions on all popular mobile and connected devices. The total number of game downloads reached 648 million by the end of year 2011 and the total number of active monthly users, across all platforms, reached 200 million. The number of employees grew from 28 to 224 during the year 2011.³ Both of these companies collaborate internationally: Max Payne was made into a Hollywood film, and Angry Birds is integrated into Lucas Films’ Star Wars franchise and 20th Century Fox’s animated film Rio.

Finnish rockers Poets of the Fall - singer Marko, guitarist Olli and keyboardist Captain - started out their musical adventure from scratch in 2003. Marko sold everything he had to invest in pursuing the love of his life, music, with his buddies Olli and Captain. He moved into his parents’ basement, when he couldn't keep a place of his own any longer. The guys then built a little studio of their own in Captain's living room for the recording and producing sessions, and kept an office in Olli's beat up old car. The result of the recording sessions was a blend of pop, rock, metal and industrial sounds. Later the guys were joined by guitarist Jaska, bassist Jani and drummer Jari. The band's first single was Late Goodbye, written for the acclaimed computer game Max Payne 2. Reaching millions of people through the game, the song earned the guys international recognition and the first prize at the G.A.N.G. Awards in 2004. Their debut album Signs of Life went straight to #1 on the Finnish album chart in January 2005, and stayed on the chart for over a year. The next album Carnival of Rust, released in April 2006, also hit the number one spot on its first week, with the debut album still on the official Top 40 chart. To date, both albums have sold platinum in Finland. The third album Revolution Roulette was released in March 2008. It also took the first place on the album chart, and broke the gold record limit in just a couple of weeks after its release.
