  • The Government Inspector by Nikolai Gogol
The Government Inspector (or The Inspector General) By Nikolai Gogol (c.1836) Translated here by Arthur A Sykes 1892. Arthur Sykes died in 1939. All Gogol’s staging instructions have been left in this edition. The names and naming tradition (use of first and family names) have been left as in the original Russian, as have some of the colloquiums and an expected understanding of the intricacies of Russian society and instruments of Government. There are footnotes at the end of each Act. Modern translations tend to use the job titles of the officials, and have updated references to the civil service, dropping all Russian words and replacing them with English equivalents. This script has been provided to demonstrate the play’s structure and flesh out the characters. This is not the final script that will be used in Oxford Theatre Guild’s production in October 2012. Rather than projecting today’s political borders into the past and proceeding from the claim that the Cossacks are either Russian or Ukrainian, this comparative project analyzes the nineteenth-century narratives that transform pre- national Cossack history into national patrimony. Following the Romantic era debates about national identity in the Russian empire, during which the Cossacks become part of both Ukrainian and Russian national self-definition, this dissertation focuses on the role of historical narrative in these burgeoning political projects.

The Drama in Disguise: Dramatic Modes of Narration and Textual Structure in the Mid-Nineteenth-Century Russian Novel by Kathleen Cameron Wiggins A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Slavic Languages and Literatures in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Irina Paperno Professor Luba Golburt Lecturer Anna Muza Professor Peter Glazer Fall 2011 The Drama in Disguise: Dramatic Modes of Narration and Textual Structure in the Mid-Nineteenth-Century Russian Novel Copyright 2011 by Kathleen Cameron Wiggins 1 Abstract The Drama in Disguise: Dramatic Modes of Narration and Textual Structure in the Mid- Nineteenth-Century Russian Novel By Kathleen Cameron Wiggins Doctor of Philosophy in Slavic Languages and Literatures University of California, Berkeley Professor Irina Paperno, Chair My dissertation investigates the generic interplay between the textual forms of drama and the novel during the 1850s, a fertile “middle ground” for the Russian novel, positioned between the works of Pushkin, Lermontov, and Gogol and the psychological realist novel of the 1860s and 70s. My study begins with Turgenev’s Rudin (1856) and then considers Goncharov’s Oblomov (1859) and Dostoevsky’s Siberian novellas (1859), concluding with an examination of how the use of drama evolved in one of the “great novels” of the 1860s, Tolstoy’s Voina i mir ( War and Peace , 1865-69). Drawing upon both novel and drama theory, my dissertation seeks to identify the specific elements of the dramatic form employed by these nineteenth-century novelists, including dramatic dialogue and gesture, construction of enclosed stage-like spaces, patterns of movement and stasis, expository strategies, and character and plot construction.

  • A Comparative Study of the Literary Output of Nikolai Gogol
The Aesthetics of Effacement: A Comparative Study of the Literary Output of Nikolai Gogol and Oscar Wilde PhD Thesis 2019 Brigit Katharine McCone Student no. 09129731 1 I declare that this thesis has not been submitted as an exercise for a degree at this or any other university and it is entirely my own work. I agree to deposit this thesis in the University’s open access institutional repository or allow the Library to do so on my behalf, subject to Irish Copyright Legislation and Trinity College Library conditions of use and acknowledgement. Signed ___________________________________________________ 2 SUMMARY This thesis marks the first comprehensive comparative study of the literary output of Nikolai Gogol and Oscar Wilde, from an intersectional perspective blending genre theory, queer theory, postcolonial theory and Jungian psychoanalysis, to examine the authors as sexually and ethnically closeted while estimating the impact of this closeting on their fiction. The thesis concludes that Nikolai Gogol and Oscar Wilde have significant parallels in their conception of the artistic process, explicable by a shared exposure anxiety, significant stylistic parallels, explicable by a shared imperative to generate interpretative suspense and facilitate plausibly deniable self-expression, and significant thematic parallels in their treatment of sexuality, ethnicity and identity, explicable by a shared experience of sexual and ethnic closeting. By establishing that all major sexual themes in the fiction of Nikolai Gogol have direct parallels in the fiction of Oscar Wilde, this thesis contributes to the contextualization of Gogol as a closeted writer, while proposing new aesthetic frameworks for the evaluation of Oscar Wilde. 3 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I am grateful for the advice and encouragement of my supervisor, Dr Sarah Smyth, of the Department of Russian and Slavonic Studies of Trinity College Dublin, and my co-supervisor, Dr Paul Delaney of the School of English, and my two examiners Jarlath Killeen and Claire Whitehead.

Yet at the beginning of the First World War, no one could have imagined that this would ever be the case, least of all the composer himself. In the first half of 1913, it had become obvious that his Osud (Fate) would not be performed in Prague, and he had 1 ‘Andriy takzhe pogruzilsya ves’ v ocharovatel’nuyu muzyku mechey i pul’, potomu chto nigde volya, zabvenie, smert’, naslazhdenie ne soedinyayutsya v takoy obol’stitel’noy, strashnoy prelesti, kak v bitve’ (Nikolay Vasil‘evich Gogol, Mirgorod, povesti, sluzhashchiya prodolzheniem Vecherov na khutore bliz Dikan’ki [Mirgorod: Tales Serving as a Sequel to “Evenings on a Farm near Dikan‘ka“], St Petersburg, 1835, ‘Taras Bulba’, chap. 4; the second half of this sentence was suppressed in the corresponding passage in chap. 5 of the 1842 version known to Janáček). 1 abandoned work on Mr Brouček’s Excursion to the Moon; he did not work on Brouček or any other opera until after the success of his Jenůfa (Její pastorkyňa) in Prague in 1916.2 Indeed prospects for performances of any large-scale works must have seemed bleak after the outbreak of war in 1914.
