Tree of Life, The Centrality of Torah Study, Class 10: Our Deepest Struggles, by Dina Weiss

Internationally renowned as a gifted lecturer and an outstanding scholar of Jewish Studies, Rebbetzin Heller has been a full-time faculty member of College in since 1980. Her areas of expertise include textual analysis of Torah, Biblical literature, and with an emphasis on the teachings of and Maharal. She is also particularly well known for her classes on the role of and analysis of the lives of women in the Torah. Rebbetzin Heller is distinguished by her unique teaching style. Based on classical sources, her insights flow in a seemingly effortless stream. While leading her listeners along creative new lines of thoughts, she resorts to a disarmingly keen sense of humor to provide practical examples that illustrate and draw personal relevance from even the most abstract concepts. Torah study lies at the core of Jewish observance. However, many people do not understand it's true value and importance. Rebbetzin Tzipora Heller delves into the beauty of Torah study, and its impact on the world. She also takes a close look at a woman’s specific relationship to Torah, the wisdom of the Torah, and its power to transform a person. In the latest Tree of Life class, Rebbetzin Heller discusses how our evil inclination seeks to attack the most vulnerable areas of the human psyche and how the clarity of Torah helps us battle these existential struggles and emerge victorious. The two areas in which the evil inclination is particularly active are the covenant of speech and the covenant of desire. This is so because the body is not open to holiness except in these two places, and impurity draws its power from kedusha. These two openings are interconnected and we see that evil speech leads to evil behavior. Therefore the way to conquer our evil inclination is to fill our inner selves with Torah. If we are satisfied with spiritual goodness we will not sense any desire to fill ourselves with sin and evil speech. The letter Mem is sometimes open and sometimes closed because it stems from the word “maamar”-speech, to tell us that our mouths should be opened and closed selectively and wisely. When Hashem commanded Avraham to perform the mitzvah of brit milah he added the letter “Heh” to his name. “Heh” symbolizes the five books of the Torah, and also parallels the five parts of the mouth-the tongue, the teeth, the lips, the larynx, and the palate. This teaches us that our inner and outer speech should be wholly dedicated and sanctified for Torah and avodat Hashem.
