Turn right at second set of lights onto North Harvard Street. Proceed approximately one mile. The Murr Center will be on your left. From the North Take I-93 south to Storrow Drive exit. Take Storrow Drive west for approximately five miles. Exit at Harvard Square/North Harvard Street. At top of exit, turn left onto North Harvard Street. You will see Blodgett Pool and then the Murr Center on your right. From the South Take I-95 north to I-93 north. Follow I-93 until Exit 20 (Massachusetts Turnpike). Take Mass. Pike west to Exit 20 (Allston/Cambridge). After paying toll, bear left at fork towards Allston. Turn right at second set of lights onto North Harvard Street. Proceed approximately one mile. The Murr Center will be on your left. Parking Limited parking is available within the athletic complex. Enter at Gate 8 on North Harvard Street and circle around behind the stadium to find metered spaces. Some parking is available on the street. You can also purchase a visitor’s parking pass to the Harvard Business School Lot which is located near by at 105 Western Avenue, Allston. Passes cost $5 after 5 pm and can be purchased at the guard booth in the lot or through the One-Day Online Permit Purchasing System. Check the Harvard University Parking Services website for more information: http://hvrd.me/visitorparking via M.B.T.A. The Red Line subway stops at Harvard Square. The Soldiers Field Complex is a 10-minute walk from the square, down JFK St. and over the Charles River. Several bus routes make stops at Harvard Square as well. Specifically, this study attempts to establish a logical expansion and adaptation of Bale’s Four-Stage Ideal-type on the Evolution of the Modern English Soccer Stadium appropriate for the history of professional baseball and football and that predicts future changes in American sport facilities. In essence, it is the author’s intention to provide a more coherent and comprehensive account of the evolving professional baseball and football sport facility and where it appears to be headed. This investigation concludes eight stages exist concerning the evolution of the professional baseball and football sport facility. Stages one through four primarily appeared before the beginning of the 20th century and existed as temporary structures which were small and cheaply built. Stages five and six materialize as the first permanent professional baseball and football facilities. Stage seven surfaces as a multi-purpose facility which attempted to accommodate both professional football and baseball equally.

A. Mostly Eastern Football and baseball developed gradually from European forebears in the 19th century; basketball, however, was invented in Springfield, MA in 1891. Baseball and football evolved along different paths. Many baseball rules were set by 1850, and recognizable baseball games were played in the 1840s and 50s. Entrepreneurs fenced in fields in order to charge admission to ball games, beginning in 1862. Overhand pitching wasn’t fully legal until 1884, a generation before a restricted version of the forward pass became legal in football. 1869 was a special year for both sports. The Cincinnati Red Stockings, with ten salaried players, compiled an amazing 58-0-1 record in 1869 and went on tour. They visited the White House, and came to California on the new transcontinental railroad to play six games in September and October 1869. Two thousand people welcomed them in San Francisco. They didn’t come to LA, which had no rail access until 1876. The team disbanded after the 1870 season. About half of them moved to Boston with manager Harry Wright in 1871, and became the Boston Red Stockings. They later became the Boston Braves, they were not the ancestors of the Boston Red Sox team, which formed in 1901 and took on the Red Sox name in 1908. The Atlanta Braves are their descendants today. Just to confuse you, the Cincinnati Reds also claim the Red Stockings as ancestors. You’d understand the 1869 game, although pitchers threw underhanded. The teams had nine positions, but note that right fielder Gerald Ellard also made the team’s baseballs.
