September 13, 7:30pm Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival presents Canned Heat Iconic blues-rockers Canned Heat are widely viewed as one of the most influential blues bands of the last 40 years for their unique mix of electric blues, country rock and boogie. Formed by blues aficionados and accomplished musicians Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson and Bob “The Bear” Hite, Canned Heat skyrocketed to international fame in the mid-1960’s with performances at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival and a headline gig at Woodstock ‘69. Their 1968 album Boogie With Canned Heat, which includes the hit “On The Road Again,” earned the band a reputation as the “Kings of Boogie.” September 14, 2pm Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival presents True Blues – A History Three musicians renowned for their dedication to the preservation of traditional acoustic blues —Corey Harris, Guy Davis and Alvin Youngblood Hart—are coming together on a Harvest stage for a special show dubbed True Blues, a presentation of the remarkable living culture of the blues through an afternoon of music and conversation. True Blues is hosted by Harris September 14, 7:30pm Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival presents Holly Cole Iconic Canadian jazz songstress Holly Cole is beloved across this country and beyond for her adventurous repertoire and ability to take a song, deconstruct it, and artfully redefine its composition into something never heard before. Raised right here in Fredericton, Cole’s illustrious career began more than 20 years ago with the Holly Cole Trio – who performed at the very first Harvest back in 1991. Cole released her first solo album in 1995, Temptation, and she continues to create theme-oriented albums rooted in jazz and pop, with samplings of everything from show tunes to folk and rock. Cinema Politica presents Acadia Acadia Sept 13 Acadia Acadia was originally produced as a motion picture in 1971 and directed by Michel Brault & Pierre Perrault. It shows on-the-spot filming of the Université de Moncton students' protest in support of greater recognition of the French presence in New Brunswick. The film records not only the demonstrative parts of the 1968-69 campaign – street marches, petitions, a sit-in – but also the self-searching and the discussion and analysis of their cause that went on among the students themselves in their efforts to re-establish an Acadian identity. The film will screen Friday, September 13 at 7pm at Conserver House, 180 Saint John St., Fredericton. Films are free but donations are encouraged. Join us for discussion after the film with Dr. Chantal Richard from the Department of French Studies at the University of New Brunswick, co-host of the event. UNB Art Centre fall exhibitions Sept 16 – Oct 11 Jean Rooney—HEYDAY and Paul Mathieson—Notes from a Visual Song and Dance Man The UNB Art Centre is pleased to announce the opening of its 2013 fall exhibition lineup on Thursday, September 19 starting at 5pm. Two exhibitions Jean Rooney—HEYDAY and Paul Mathieson—Notes from a Visual Song and Dance Man features the work of two of New Brunswick’s most exciting visual artists. The artists will also give a walking tour of their exhibits on Wednesday, October 2 at 6pm. 3 In her most recent exhibition, HEYDAY, multi-media artist and printmaker Jean Rooney assumes a playful attitude as she explores the possibilities of photography, digital painting and inkjet giclée printing on aluminum. In production since 2012, this series of landscapes exhibit Rooney’s signature palette of dazzling supersaturated colour. Jean Rooney was born in Dublin, Ireland. She holds a degree in printmaking from The National College of Art and Design in Dublin and a Masters Degree in Multimedia Systems from Trinity College, Dublin University. Paul Mathieson’s Notes from a Visual Song and Dance Man is an exhibition of acrylic on canvas paintings inspired by contemporary culture that portray the human condition with wit and precision. Although primarily depictions of the city of Saint John, they have a distinctly cosmopolitan character presenting the artist’s take on the urban landscape. Whether interior or exterior, they act as theatrical sets for scenes filled with the frenetic life of the highly stylized and urbane city dweller. Paul Mathieson was born in England where he received both his BFA and his MFA in Art Education. Paul moved to Saint John New Brunswick in 1975 and maintained dual careers as an artist and art educator. Jean Rooney—HEYDAY and Paul Mathieson—Notes from a Visual Song and Dance Man run from September 16 through October 11, 2013. 5. Directed by Joachim Roenning and Espen Sandberg, the team behind the World War II epic Max Manus, the film chronicles, with breathtaking visuals, Heyerdahl’s bold journey from Peru to Polynesia. A risk-taker since childhood, Heyerdahl (Pål Sverre Hagen; Max Manus) is one of the last examples of the scientist as adventurer. Unable to find a publisher to print his thesis that the settlers of Polynesia could have arrived from South America rather than from Asia as commonly believed, he hatches a plan to cross the Pacific on raft, just like the ancient Incas before him. Undeterred by the obstacles he encounters—ridicule at his outlandish hypothesis, dire financial straits, and strained family relationships—Heyerdahl assembles an authentic replica of a balsa wood raft along with a motley crew to join him on his journey. The challenges involved in launching the voyage pale in comparison to the harsh conditions they face at sea— violent storms, encounters with sharks and mounting tensions among the crew. 6. Music on the Hill Concert 1: Marsh-Boy Music Premiere Sept 22 Classic singing in English: Fredericton’s new group of all-star musicians will premiere Michael Miller’s latest vocal chamber music piece—Marsh-Boy Music—in the first concert of Music on the Hill performance series on Sunday, September 22 at 3pm in Memorial Hall, UNB. “Anyone who likes Schubert’s songs will like Marsh-Boy Music, which is about a love story, a dramatic emotion shift, a expressive diary style, and a life changing journey,” Michael Miller said.
