SAMUEL LOUDON (1727-1813) {Merchant, Printer and Patriot) WITH SOME OF HIS LETTERS Samuel Loudon, said to have been born in Scotland in 1727, lived the greater part of his life in New York. To antiquarians he is best known as a printer, for he established and printed one of New York's important newspapers, The New York Packet and the American Advertiser, which he began on January 4, 1776, and in 1784 changed to Loudon's New York Packet. Upon the occupa tion of the City by the British in September, 1776, he removed to Fishkill, where he continued its publication. Through the courtesy of Dr. Austin Baxter Keep, the Library secured photostat copies of thirteen letters written by Samuel Loudon between the years 1767 and 1795, the originals of which are in the pdssession of the Peck Library of the Norwich Free Academy, Norwich, Conn. -
Dyckman House Stands As the Last Typical Dutch Colonial Farmhouse Left on Manhattan Island
Landmarks Preservation Commission July 12, 1967, Number 3 LP-0309 DYC~~ HOUSE, Broadway between West 204th Street and West 207th Street, Borough of Manhattan. Built about 1783. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 2241, Lvt 35. On June 14, 1966, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Dyclonan House and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site. (Item No. 41). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Two witnesses spoke in favor of designation. There were no speakers in opposition to designation. DESCRIPTION JJ[D ANALYSIS Today the Dyckman House stands as the last typical Dutch Colonial farmhouse left on Manhattan Island. Built of fieldstone, brick and wood, this Eighteenth Century house replaced one of 1748 which was destroyed by the British in the Revolutionary War. Descendants of the Dyclonan family purchased and restored the house with period furnishings, presenting it to the City in 1915 which now manages it as a museum and park. It is a modest dwelling with an unpretentious charm and warmth. Architecturally, it is a country farmhouse of the period, at its best. Perched on a small landscaped hillock, with a sturdy fieldstone wall enclosing the property, it is a valued treasure of our architectural legacy. Built in 1783, tho structure has a few features and details su~gesting earlier construction. It is believed that some of the materials salvaged from the 1748 house were used in erecting this farmhouse. The one and one-half story dwelling with high basement, has a sweeping low-pitched gambrel roof, curved out over a full porch. -

The redesigned map should be practical and able to be used in the real world. My choice on the New York State Park is the Central Park in Manhatten New York. I Chose Central Park because of my own experience. As a first time visitor in New York last year, I visited Central Park with my cousin who has been living in NewYork for seven years. While I was doing my research, I did not find any map for first-time visitors from the central park official website. If I were on my own while I first visited Central Park, I would not be able to know where to begin my visit. I am sure that the other first-time visitors would have the same problem. These are the reasons that my map is designed for first-time visitors who have a limited amount of time. In my map, I featured several top attractions in and around the park. I also included some top-rated restaurants around and inside the park since Knowing where to consume good food is essential during visiting. -

The application for an ainendment of the Zoning Map was filed by Department of Housing Preservation and Development, Edison Schools, Inc. and the Museum for African Art on March 21, 2001, to rezone a site within the Special Park Improvement District, bounded by Fifth Avenue, East 109th Street, East 110th Street and a line 150 feet east of Fifth Avenue, from an R9 district to a C4-6 district. The proposed action would facilitate the construction of the Edison Schools/ Museum for African Art project, a mixed-use development to be located on the northern portion of Fifth Avenue's Museum Mile in East Harlem, Manhattan Community District 11. RELATED ACTIONS In addition to the application for the zoning map amendment which is the subject of this report (C 010511 ZMM), implementation of the proposed development also requires action by the City Planning Commission on the following applications which are being considered concurrently with this application: N 010510 ZRM: Zoning Text Amendment to the Special Park Improvement District regulations (Section 92-00 of the Zoning Resolution) related to bulk and use. -

George Pearse Ennis Born: 1884, St. Louis, Mo. Died: 28 August 1936, Utica, New York George Pearse Ennis, a prominent early-twentieth century American artist, was known for his landscapes, marines, mural decorations, and achieved an international reputation for his watercolors. After turning down an appointment at West Point to become an artist, Ennis studied in St. Louis at the Art School of Washington University, the St. Louis Art Museum, the Holmes Art School of Chicago, and under William Merritt Chase at his school in New York. Among the many awards Ennis received for his work were prizes at the Salmagundi Club, including the Shaw Prize, in 1922, 1923 and 1925; the Kramer Prize of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1922; the Isador Prizes in Watercolor and Pencil Drawing in 1924; the William Church Osborn Prize in 1926; the Gallatin Prize for landscape in 1927; the Dana gold medal from the Philadelphia Water Color Club in 1931; a prize at the Wilmington Watercolor Club in 1931; a prize at the New York Watercolor Club in 1932; and the Zabriskie Prize of the American Water Color Society in 1934. Ennis founded the Eastport School of Art in Maine in 1922, and was a founder of and taught at the Grand Central Painters and Sculptors Gallery and School of Art in New York. In 1929 he was appointed Head of the John and Mable Ringling Art Museum at Sarasota, Florida. In October 1932, Ennis opened the George Pearse Ennis School of Painting in New York City. He was a member of the Allied Artists of America, the American Watercolor Society, the Aquarelists, the Artists Aid Society, the Artists Fund Society, the Boston Art Club, the Florida Fine Arts Association, the Guild of American Painters, the New York Architectural League, the New York Watercolor Club, of which he was elected president in 1933, the New York Society of Painters, and the Salmagundi Club. -

MONOPSONY IN MANPOWER: ORGANIZED BASEBALL MEETS THE ANTITRUST LAWS* FOR over sixty years professional baseball clubs have disregarded with im- punity the mandate of the Sherman Act I that "competition, not combination should be the law of trade.' 2 By agreeing not to compete for players' ;ervices and by blacklisting those players who turn to higher bidders, a combinatio,, of 335 clubs, known as "organized baseball," has attained a monopsony, or "buyer's monopoly," 3 over the market for skilled baseball talent. Use of this monopsony leverage has enabled the combination to regulate player salaries, exclude *The scope of this Comment is limited to restraints on competition in the purchase of baseball players' services and the selling of professional baseball exhibitions. Because of space limitations, the industry's antitrust problems regarding radio and television will not here be discussed.
