Roux Pretoria 2009 S T R E L I T Z I A This series has replaced Memoirs of the Botanical Survey of South Africa and Annals of the Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens which SANBI inherited from its predecessor organisations. The plant genus Strelitzia occurs naturally in the eastern parts of southern Africa. It comprises three arborescent species, known as wild bananas, and two acaulescent species, known as crane flowers or bird-of-paradise flowers. The logo of the South African National Biodiversity Institute is based on the striking inflorescence of Strelitzia reginae, a native of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal that has become a garden favourite worldwide. It sym- bolises the commitment of the Institute to champion the exploration, conservation, sustain- able use, appreciation and enjoyment of South Africa’s exceptionally rich biodiversity for all people. The fossils are with well-preserved leaf pinnae and in situ spores, and are represented by pinnatifid fronds and crenate pinna margins, with oval sori almost covering 3/5 area of areolae on each side of the main costa. In situ spores have verrucate outer ornamentation, and are elliptical in polar view and bean-shaped in equatorial view. The venation is characterized by anastomosing veins with simple included veinlets forming 2–3 order pentagonal areolae. -

Asplenium petrarchae (Guérin) DC. is an aggregate species comprising a rare di ploid and a more common tetraploid cytotype.A. trichomanes L. is also a complex of which two diploid, two tetraploid cytotypes as well as a rare hexaploid one were reported for Europe (see review inR e ic h s t e in 1981 and addenda 1982). These cytotypes are usually treated as subspecies. The first hybrid between members of the two complexes was collected by G. Lu s i n a , 27 August 1935 in the Island of Lussino (= Losinj, now Yugoslavia, Archipelago Quarnero, Adriatic Sea), described asAsple nium helii Lusina (1943) and correctly interpreted as hybrids, glandulosum Loisel. (= A. petrarchae) x A. trichomanes, quoted by P ic h i S e r m o l l i et al. Ind. Fil. suppl. IV: 28 (1965). This name has obviously been overlooked by other workers and also in the review by R e ic h s t e in (1981). -

Authors has collected two species of genus Pteris viz; Pteris dactylina Hook, P. quadriaurita (Retz.) and one species of Coniogramme viz; Coniogramme intermedia Hieron. Authors has studied their structural details, epidermal details like stomatal structures, frequency and sinuosity of upper and lower epidermis in great details. Spores sporangial and venation details are also studied in details. The zone extends between 1200 to 1850 m amsl representing the amalgamation of both sub-tropical and temperate vegetation. -

Email: [email protected] INTISARI Kelapa sawit (Elaeis guineensis) merupakan salah satu komoditas utama di Provinsi Riau. Secara morfologi, batang kelapa sawit mempunyai lingkungan yang sesuai bagi pertumbuhan paku-pakuan epifit, karena bagian pangkal tangkai daun yang melebar sehingga dapat menampung serasah organik dan materi anorganik lainnya. Tujuan dari kajian ini adalah untuk mengetahui keanekaragaman jenis paku epifit yang tumbuh pada batang kelapa sawit. Sebanyak 125 individu kelapa sawit dari tujuh area kajian di Pekanbaru, Riau telah diteliti. Jumlah jenis paku epifit yang diidentifikasi pada penelitian ini adalah 16 jenis yang tergolong enam famili. Kata kunci : paku epifit, kelapa sawit, Pekanbaru ABSTRACT Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) is one main commodity in Riau Province. Morphologically, the trunk of oil palm has suitable environment to the growth of epiphytic fern, due to its broaden base of petiole that may accumulate organic and inorganic debris. The objective of this study was to investigate the diversity of epiphytic fern on the oil palm tree. A total of 125 oil palm trees from seven study sites in Pekanbaru, Riau were observed. The number of epiphytic ferns identified in this study was 16 species belongs to six families. Keyword: epiphytic fern, oil palm tree, Pekanbaru INTRODUCTION flowers.
