1968 Monte Carlo Rally – first victory in the 911 The Porsche 911 took three consecutive wins in the Monte Carlo Rally, with Vic Elford and David Stone delivering the first of these victories in 1968. In an ideal development for Porsche, the 1968 Monte Carlo Rally was the first to be subject to new rules that removed restrictions relating to cubic capacity classes and the use of professional and amateur drivers. The system applied as of that year boiled down to a single maxim: fastest car wins! Another factor that was markedly different to previous years was the weather. The 37th Monte Carlo Rally was held in almost spring-like temperatures, with these mild conditions extending up into the mountains. The teams demanded racing tyres, but the available stocks proved insufficient. This led to additional tyres featuring a soft mixture, little tread and no spikes being flown in by the tyre manufacturers via Nice and transported to the special tests. While the French driver Gérard Larrousse dominated the early stages of this edition of the Monte Carlo Rally in his Renault Alpine 1300, Vic Elford and David Stone bided their time in the 911 S 2.0 and waited for an opening. The ‘night of the long knives’, which was open to the sixty fastest teams, initially saw Larrousse further extend his lead before Elford hit back. Completing the special test at the Col de la Couillole nearly a minute faster than the Alpine, he duly raced into the lead. The final tests then saw the top drivers take even greater risks. -

NEW Press Information Coburg, December 10th, 2010 NEW 2 The legend returns. The NEW STRATOS will be officially presented on 29./30.11.2010, at the Paul Ricard Circuit in Le Castellet. The legendary Lancia Stratos HF was without a doubt the most spectacular and successful rally car of the 70s. With its thrilling lines and uncompro- mising design tailored to rally use, the Stratos not only single-handedly rewrote the history of rallying, it won a permanent place in the hearts of its countless fans with its dramatic performance on the world’s asphalt and gravel tracks – a performance which included three successive world championship titles. For Michael Stoschek, a collector and driver of historic racing cars, as well as a successful entrepreneur in the automotive supply industry, the development and construction of a modern version of the Stratos represents the fulfillment of a long-held dream. Back in 2003, the dream had already begun to take on a concrete form; now, at last, it has become a reality: In November 2010, forty years after the Stratos’ presentation at the Turin Motor Show, the New Stratos will be publicly presented for the first time at the Paul Ricard Circuit. The legend returns. NEW 3 A retrospective. It all began in 1970, at the Turin exhibition stand of the automobile designer, Bertone. The extreme Stratos study on display there – a stylistic masterpiece by the designer Marcello Gandini – didn’t just excite visitors, but caught the attention of Cesare Fiorio, Lancia’s team manager at the time… and refused to let go. -

Editorial I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed Julian Porters talk at Bishop Auckland Golf Club last Wednesday (12th December) I don’t think there is anyone who has as much knowledge of the Championship as Julian and we as a club are extremely fortunate that he was able to give us some of his valuable time to provide a fantastic insight into the WRC. It was also great to see so many club members and visitors from other clubs attend. I was also quite taken with the venue, and I understand that the catering was also of a very high standard (damn diet!!!) For special events such as this and the Dinner Dance, providing the costs are not too prohibitive, I would say that it is an ideal venue. -

ENACIOUS Londoner Vic Elford and his navigator, David Stone, got their revenge on the BMC Minis by winning this year's Monte TCarlo Rally in their Porsche 911 T. Another Porsche, driven by Finns Pauli Toivonen and Martti Tiukkanen, came second. The Porsches triumphed despite the incantations of BMC com petitions manager Peter Browning, who prayed for snow, ice, and all that slip pery stuff just before the final speed trials. Last year the weather man heeded Browning's prayers and the Minis swept home to victory over Elford's Porsche, thanks to their superior slip and-slide handling. This time, however, the tables were reversed. The weather stayed dry, so did the roads - and the Porsches were able to make full use of their power advan tage to topple the Minis. This was how Ford's advertising campaign announced the Escort RS1600 to the world in early 1970. A combination of Escort Twin Cam chassis and running gear allied with Ford's newly developed Cosworth sixteen-valve twin cam BDA (Belt Drive Type A) engine unit. The announcement heralded the birth of what was to become, along with its Mk11 descendant the RS1800, arguably the most successful rally car of the 1970's. The RS1600 amassed an impressive tally of victories from the forests of the RAC, with a 1972- 74 hat-trick, to the 1000 Lakes with ve wins, the Arctic stages of Finland, the Heatwave in New Zealand and possibly the toughest car test on earth in East Africa, the Safari which the Escort won in 1972. XPU 216L, the Ex-Works Ford Escort RS1600 rst driven by Roger Clark on the 1973 East African Safari was prepared by the Ford Boreham Competition Department in April 1973. XPU was also driven by Tony Pond (1973 Scottish), Russell Brookes (1973 RAC), and Andrew Cowan (1974 World Cup). A previous owner who acquired the Escort in 1991 carried out a complete restoration to full works specication, reconditioning virtually every part and only completing the work in 1998. Upon completion the owner won the HRCR Championship in 2001 and was 4th overall in the MSA British Historic Series.
