    En 1898, Jean Dupuis fonde à Marcinelle une imprimerie. Celle-ci ne cessera de croître durant un quart de siècle. En 1922, les éditions Dupuis lancent l'hebdomadaire "Les Bonnes Soirées", magazine contenant des romans et destinés aux femmes au foyer. En 1924 paraît "Le Moustique" plutôt destiné à un lectorat masculin et contenant des articles d'actualité ainsi que les programmes radio. Fort du succès de ces deux publications, l'éditeur décide de s'adresser aux jeunes en créant l'hebdomadaire "Spirou" dont le n°1 paraît le 21 avril 1938 (tirage 80.000 exemplaires). Le titre du journal signifie "écureuil" en dialecte wallon de Charleroi, par extension il désigne également un garçon vif et espiègle. La série Spirou est dessinée par Rob-Vel, de son vrai nom Robert Velter (1909 – 1991) qui dessinait déjà le personnage de Toto dans la publication française du même nom. Robert Velter sera engagé très jeune comme steward sur les bateaux faisant les traversées transatlantiques. Il consacre son temps libre aux croquis et caricatures, entre autres des petits grooms débrouillards au service des passagers. Lorsque Dupuis le contacte en 1937 pour créer le personnage de Spirou, c'est tout naturellement qu'il pense à un groom qu'il placera dans le "Moustic Hôtel", clin d'œil à l'hebdomadaire de la même maison d'éditions. Les premières aventures de Spirou sont fraîches et naïves. Rob-Vel dessinera plus d'une centaine de planches en deux ans. Toutefois, en 1940 il sera mobilisé et il ne pourra plus fournir ses dessins aux Editions Dupuis.

    Jean-Claude FOURNIER Né le 21 mai 1943, Jean-Claude FOURNIER est originaire de Saint-Quay Portrieux où il a vécu son enfance et où il a réinstallé son studio depuis 1987. En même temps que des études supérieures à Paris en vue d'obtenir le professorat de dessin, il suit les cours de l'École d'Art Dramatique Ch. Dullin. La bande dessinée lui apparaît comme la synthèse de ses deux passions, le dessin et le théâtre. En 1967, il crée le personnage de BIZU pour le journal de SPIROU. Il se voit très vite confier par l'éditeur DUPUIS le scénario et le dessin des aventures de "Spirou et Fantasio" qu'il animera de 1968 à 1981 et dont il réalisera neuf albums (n° 20 à 29, sauf le 24), dont L'Ankou qui se déroule entièrement dans les Monts d'Arrée. Il est à noter que cette aventure de Spirou a été éditée en breton. Parallèlement, de la même façon que son maître Franquin l'a reçu chez lui et lui a offert des heures et des heures de son temps pour l'aider à devenir auteur, il reçoit dans son atelier de Rennes de nombreux jeunes passionnés de bande dessinée qui deviendront à leur tour des professionnels, et qui ont pour nom Blesteau, Hiettre, Gégé, Malo Louarn, Emmanuel Lepage, Lucien Rollin, Michel Plessix, lesquels passeront le flambeau à d'autre jeunes, alimentant ainsi la belle histoire de la florissante BD bretonne dont on dit qu'elle est née dans l'atelier de Fournier. L'album des aventures de Spirou, « Le Gri-gri du Niokolo-Koba », remporte un vif succès singulièrement au Sénégal où Fournier est convié à trois reprises pour venir animer des stages de BD pour les enseignants, les étudiants et les formateurs en pédagogie.

    240 Lambeens And Pint Chapter 12 The Interaction of Image and Text In Modern Comics Tom Lambeens and Kris PintLambeens and Pint Introduction The combination of image and text is undoubtedly one of the most typical features of the comic strip genre. This combination in itself is, of course, far from new. Sequential images were already combined with textual elements in Egyptian hieroglyphs or medieval manuscripts and paintings.1 The comic strip as such evolved in the first half of the nineteenth century, with artists like Rodolphe Töpffer (influenced by William Hogarth), Wilhelm Busch and Pehr Nord quist, all of whom created stories that were easy to reproduce and com­ bined words and images, albeit still strictly separated from each other. Inspired by the American newspaper comics of the early twentieth century, like Frede­ rik Burr Opper’s Happy Hooligan (1900) and Alphonse and Gaston (1901), the European comic strip started to integrate speech balloons into the image itself, with Hergé’s Les Aventures de Tintin as its most prominent and best­known ex­ ponent.2 Initially conceived for the youth supplement of a Belgian newspaper, Tintin proved so successful that his adventures were soon published in book form as well. The emergence of real comic books meant an important evolu­ tion of comics, a move away from the rather transitory medium of the newspa­ per. Yet for a long time, comic books were mostly seen as children’s entertain­ ment. In the seventies, this view began to change with the emergence of the so­called “graphic novel,” which featured more mature content and, at times, a more experimental style of drawing as well.

In the first title story, drawn by Jean -Emmanuel Vermot-Desroches, his first graphic novel, Horus the Sorcerer is seen in earlier years in school wheeling and dealing his way to power already but set up by someone out to embarrass him pub licly. A hex has been cast that makes women all declare their baby is his. The agile maneuvering in this story is something to behold. In the second, “Ruckus at the Brewers”, the goofiest since the Parade sub -series, dimwitted Gro- Gro is entrusted with a mission to bring back a special beer brewed by a village of curmudgeonly rabbits. This is the first time Gro -Gro must m ake decisions on his own, at times instinctively, at times randomly, just never after much thought. He runs into a swashbuckling poet wh o variously saves his large butt or gets it fried. The only saving grace for both of them is how stupid the rest of the world is as well. The artist on this, Yoann, is noted for having been given the large assignment of being the newest artist to continue one of Europe’s biggest series for children: the adventures of Spirou & Fantasio. The most notable artist for this series was the genius André Franquin. DUNGEON combines suspenseful adventure with a spoof of heroic fantasy in telling the tales of a castle filled with monsters.
