This led them to an absorption with the Jewish creation myths in Genesis, which they obsessively reinterpreted to formulate allegorical explanations of how humans ended up trapped in the world of matter. The basic Gnostic story, which varied in details from teacher to teacher, was this: In the beginning there was an unknowable, immaterial, and invisible God, sometimes called the Father of All and sometimes by other names. “He” was neither male nor female, and was composed of an implicitly finite amount of a living nonphysical substance. Surrounding this God was a great empty region called the Pleroma (the fullness). Beyond the Pleroma lay empty space. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas. -

METAPHYSICS IN KÖNIGSBERG PRIOR TO KANT (1703-1770) Marco SGARBI* ABSTRACT: The present contribute aims to reconstruct, using the methodology of intellectual history, the broad spectrum of metaphysical doctrines that Kant could know during the years of the formation of his philosophy. The first part deals with the teaching of metaphysics in Königsberg from 1703 to 1770. The second part examines the main characteristics of the metaphysics in the various handbooks, which were taught at the Albertina, in order to have an exhaustive overview of all metaphysical positions. Quellengeschichte. 1 Introduction The Kant-Forschung has never paid a lot of attention to the reconstruction of the Kantian philosophy beginning from the cultural background of Königsberg’s university. (1) Joss Whedon has often stated that each year of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was planned to end in such a way that, were the show not renewed, the finale would act as an apt summation of the series so far. This was obviously truer of some years than others – generally speaking, the odd-numbered years were far more clearly possible endings than the even ones, offering definitive closure of a phase in Buffy’s career rather than a slingshot into another phase. Both Season Five and Season Seven were particularly planned as artistically satisfying conclusions, albeit with very different messages – Season Five arguing that Buffy’s situation can only be relieved by her heroic death, Season Seven allowing her to share, and thus entirely alleviate, slayerhood. Being the Chosen One is a fatal burden; being one of the Chosen Several Thousand is something a young woman might live with. (2) It has never been the case that endings in Angel were so clear-cut and each year culminated in a slingshot ending, an attention-grabber that kept viewers interested by allowing them to speculate on where things were going. Season One ended with the revelation that Angel might, at some stage, expect redemption and rehumanization – the Shanshu of the souled vampire – as the reward for his labours, and with the resurrection of his vampiric sire and lover, Darla, by the law firm of Wolfram & Hart and its demonic masters (‘To Shanshu in LA’, 1022). -

Logical Normativity and Rational Agency—Reassessing Locke’s Relation to Logic HUAPING LU-ADLER* abstract A substantive body of literature has been dedicated to explaining Locke’s crucial role in the development of a new logic in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, commonly referred to as the “logic of ideas” or “facultative logic.” I examine Locke’s relation to logic from a different angle. I focus on two philosophical issues that permeate his remarks about logic in various texts. One is about what grounds the alleged authority of putative logical rules. The other concerns the relation between logic and the psychology of reasoning. These issues are not only historically signifi- cant but also continuous with an ongoing modern discourse in philosophy of logic. key words agency, Locke, logic, normativity, syllogism 1 . introduction There is an exegetical quandary when it comes to interpreting Locke’s relation to logic. On the one hand, over the last few decades a substantive amount of literature has been dedicated to explaining Locke’s crucial role in the development of a new logic in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This "Sage of Konigsberg" spent his entire life within the confines of East Prussia, but his thoughts traveled freely across Europe and, in time, to America, where their effects are still apparent. No Proxies on Judgment Day: Revelation 20 By Charles Feinberg Is specifically no proxies on Judgment Day? Now I know how we use the word proxies today. We use that of people to dye their hair by using peroxide. But that's not what I mean by proxies. Proxy is a word that means a substitute. One who as a substitute is allowed to vote in a certain organization when a regular member of the organization is not there or is absent, detained for some reason. No substitutes then, no proxies on Judgment Day. I'm going to ask you to turn to a portion of Scripture, though it is brief. I know of no comparable portion anywhere in the Word of God and certainly not outside of it. Fifteen verses that are so remarkable in their disclosure of a piling up of events in the future. I'm speaking of the 20th chapter of the revelation. This chapter is intensely important and intensely significant because in a sense it marks a continental divide in the Bible. You may take all commentaries on the Revelation and all theological works. Theologies as we call them and they divide right down the line. Clean cut mark of demarcation, a line of demarcation between those who treat this 20th chapter of the Revelation one way and those who treat it another way. It is a dividing line. It is a chapter where if you have been interpreting the Bible incorrectly from Genesis on to this is pay day you come to a dead end.
