1 Message from Mrs Margaret Leung, JP, Campaign Committee Chairman
As the Chest enters its 42nd year of operations, I am delighted to report that we raised a record- breaking HK$278 million in donations last year, thanks to the generosity and support of the Hong Kong community.
Every year, the Chest hosts over 40 events that target a broad range of corporate and individual donors. During the past year, we were very encouraged to achieve new records in participation and donations at many of our regular events, such as the Corporate Challenge and Half Marathon, and through our Corporate and Employee Contribution Programme.
We must also express our special thanks to Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd for its “Stock Code Balloting for Charity Scheme”, which raised over HK$57 million during the year under review – an impressive 160 per cent increase compared to the 2008/2009 campaign year.
We regularly introduce new elements into our flagship programmes to ensure that our events remain highly attractive to donors:
• The New Territories Walk for Millions was held on the new Stonecutters Bridge before its official opening to the public. The event attracted over 30,000 participants;
• We updated our “Community for the Chest” TV Show, staging a “Renowned Chefs for the Chest” segment – treating donors to gourmet Chinese and Japanese dinners thanks to the support of Hang Seng Bank and the Consulate-General of Japan in Hong Kong. We also added a ballroom dancing segment, and invited three young stars from the Oscar Award-winning film “Slumdog Millionaire” to perform at the show.
We introduced several new events with the support of our charity partners, including Wine for Millions on Stonecutters Bridge, the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce charity walk in celebration of the PRC’s 60th Anniversary, and the Police Tactical Unit Headquarters Charity Open Day, in which the Police Tactical Unit opened its Fanling Headquarters to the public for the first time in support of the Chest.
These are just a few of the many successful events that led to our record-breaking results in the previous fund-raising year.
Finally, I must thank all our donors, sponsors, partner organisations and Committee members for their contributions – which include donations, logistical support and participation. One of the Chest’s major objectives is to encourage community-wide participation in giving and we are always grateful for the enthusiastic response shown by Hong Kong’s generous citizens.
As we look ahead, the Chest hopes to draw strength from all sectors of society – encouraging everyone to join together to help those in need in Hong Kong.

“The greatest happiness in life comes from sharing”. Since its inception in 2001, “Celebrations for the Chest” has received tremendous support from the Hong Kong community. By donating to the Chest in lieu of their gifts for birthdays, opening of new offices or businesses, wedding celebrations, anniversaries, and other special occasions, donors can share the joy of life and warm blessing with the needy in Hong Kong.

“Community for the Chest” Television Show, jointly presented by The Community Chest and Television Broadcasts Limited, was held on 6 June 2009 at Tseung Kwan O TVB City. The brilliant performances of celebrities and artists not only presented an amazing night to the audience, through a series of entertaining programmes, they also rallied support from the general public to raise funds for the worthy causes supported by the Chest.

“Dance for the Chest” – one of the highlights of “Community for the Chest” Television Show, featured nine celebrities, namely Mrs Sabrina Choi, Ms Yumi Honda, Mrs Lau Ng Mui-chu, Mr Raymond Leung, Mr Ng Sau-kei, Wilfred, MH, JP; Mr Peter H Pang, Mr Mingo Tang, Mr Michael Tien, JP; and Ms Margaret Zee, whose dancing talent received significant support.

The Community Chest invited the three young stars from the Oscar Award-winning film, “Slumdog Millionaire”, including Ayush Mahesh Khedekar ĩfeaturing young JamalĪ, Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail ĩfeaturing young SalimĪ and Rubina Ali ĩfeaturing young LatikaĪ, together with eight Bollywood dancers to perform at the Television Show. Joined by Mr Leon Lai, BBS, MH; and Mr David Harilela, Board Members of the Chest, their performance attracted strong public support.

The Community Chest and Police Tactical Unit ĩPTUĪ jointly organised the first charity open day on 9 May 2009 at the PTU headquarters. During the open day, PTU equipments, uniforms and vehicles were displayed, while PTU history showreel, police dog show, PTU Platoon Tactics and Special Duties Unit ĩSDUĪ demonstrations were also presented to visitors. In addition to acquiring a better understanding of the PTU, visitors also helped the Chest improve the quality of local social welfare services.

The Community Chest continued to stage the “Renowned Chefs for the Chest” series of Charity Dinners. The “Chinese Episode” was held at Hang Seng Bank Headquarters Penthouse on 29 May 2009. Attending guests not only enjoyed delicious signature dishes prepared by renowned chefs, several collectors’ items were donated for a charity auction to raise funds for the Chest.
Mr Shigekazu Sato, The Consul-General of Japan in Hong Kong and Dr Dennis T L Sun, BBS, JP, Campaign Committee Co-Chairman of The Community Chest, co-hosted the “Japanese Episode” at the Residence of the Consul-General on 22 May 2009, inviting the Chest’s supporters to indulge in a dinner with the highly sought-after “Hida Beef” from Gifu Prefecture, Japan as the main course. Mrs Nina Lam, MH, Board Member of the Chest, graciously opened her home on 15 May 2009 to share her culinary masterpieces with friends and guests while raising funds for those in need.

The 2010 Community Chest Corporate Challenge was successfully held on 17 January at Sai Kung Pak Tam Chung Country Park. More than 1,400 runners from 39 corporations and organisations formed 179 teams took part in the 10 Km Run and 21 Km Half Marathon which set a new record for the event. All participants demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and ardently raised funds for the “Community Support Services for the Elderly” subvented by the Chest.

”ϛΙ The “Corporate and Employee Contribution Programmeڏȶ୦ཾЅჍষ༓ਖॎგȷϴઉߜ এкौᝰҬȄᇄᐠᄺЅჍষџആႆ is a major fund-raising programme providing simple and ᙏՄӻϯϽޟࣀଢ଼Ȃѓࢂϴઉᆦȶᜋȷ direct channels, namely “Green Day”, “Love Teeth Day”, РȃϴઉདྷбРȃϴઉȶȷॵРȃ “Skip Lunch Day”, “Stock Code Balloting for Charity ȶӋфဴཏܪᡆԊ௶ॎგȷȃᐠᄺޢ Scheme”, corporate direct donations and monthly ਖȃჍষТᖠۡਖ้Лࡻ၎ payroll contributions for corporations and employees to ҬȄԪѴȂᐠᄺһџՌᖞᒲшᅖഺཎޟ invest in the community. Corporations can also organise ೩Ԥዩᓾ their own fund-raising events to support thisᝰࣀଢ଼ਖօϴઉߜȄϴઉߜ ॎგȂоߒපᐠᄺᄇޥོޟᄙਖօȄ Programme. Participating corporations would be recognised through a joint award scheme.

ϴઉᆦȶᜋȷРܻўԑϲТΜРЅΤРȂ The Community Chest Green Day was held on 7 and ЈᖞȄϬԑ࡙Ȃϴઉߜоȶٖߖ 8 June 2009 consecutively. Themed “Think Green andڍΙ Ride Green”, the event encouraged the general public ڳᆦՓҡࣀȂҥΙаᐙဨۖȷ࣏кᚠȂ Ȃӵಠ to take a greener form of transport, appreciate theڎᢱӒ෫ѿҕॸསᕗ߳ϴӓҺώ greeneries in Hong Kong and, at the same time, raise ོޥཎݠ፬ҏ෫ӨୢᆦՓශमϞᎷȂһ࣏ Ռ funds for the local needy. Dress Special Day, held on 30 September 2009, received tremendous support from more than 430,000 participants from over 1,200 corporations, government departments and educational institutions. All participants showed their care by dressing in their favourite and special wear to work or to school.
The Chest invited Mr John Chan, Animator of Postgal Workshop and his team to help rejuvenate this event by designing and producing a brand new TV commercial and other promotional materials. All funds raised through Dress Special Day were allocated to develop and enhance the “Family & Child Welfare Services”, “Employment Support Services”, “Counselling Services” and “Services for Street Sleepers and Cage Residents” supported by the Chest.

The Community Chest “Flag Day” received long-term staunch support from students and volunteers. Young participants of Flag Day could take this opportunity to serve the community and help the people in need.
On 14 November 2009, 13,000 students and volunteers from over 220 primary and secondary schools, kindergartens, the Chest’s member agencies, as well as other voluntary organisations participated in “Street Flag Sale”. Together with the generous contributions from 40 schools participating in “Gold Flag Sale”, the event channeled much needed resources to enhance “Services for the Physically Disabled” the Chest supports.

Jointly organised by The Community Chest and Education Bureau, “Greening for the Chest” aims at promoting environmental protection among the youth, and at the same time, raise funds for the needy in Hong Kong.
With the support of 18 districts Community Youth Clubs, students have been encouraged to involve in “Clean for Charity”, “Hiking for Charity”, “Creative Greening Fund-raising Activitity” and “Charity Plant Sale” which brought a significant amount of donation into the Chest’s coffers. With tremendous support rendered by all CYC Districts Committees, principals, teachers and parents, the event was a great success.
This year, all funds raised through “Greening for the Chest” will be allocated to the Chest’s member social welfare agencies which provide “Rehabilitation and Aftercare Services”.

Over 300 participants from local organisations and individual runners charged up the 2,500 staircases of Two ifc to raise funds for “Services for the Mentally & Multiple Handicapped” supported by the Chest.

The Community Chest “New Territories Walk” and “Hong Kong and Kowloon Walk” were successfully held on 15 November 2009 and 10 January 2010 respectively. The “New Territories Walk” adopted a brand new route – Stonecutters Bridge which brought a delightful experience to the walkers. More than 45,000 individuals and participants from companies and organisations formed over 350 walking teams to support these two significant events to raise funds for the “Children and Youth Services” and “Elderly Services” respectively.

The Community Chest “Wine for Millions” was held on 12 December 2009. The event was supported by over one hundred donors to help the Chest enhance social welfare services for the needy.
Donors were invited to drive through the then-to-be-opened Stonecutters Bridge. Against the scenic sunset at the Bridge, cocktails and refreshments sponsored by The Mira Hong Kong were served. Charity Dinner was held at the WHISK of the newly renovated The Mira Hong Kong. Attending guests were offered a chance to experience the wonderful dinner menu paired with a selection of the world’s finest wines prepared by the world renowned Singaporean chef, Mr Justin Quek.
