C'est dans cette perspective que nous avons eu le désir de proposer le film THX 1138 de George Lucas (1971) en tant qu'objet de recherche. Notre analyse a été réalisée à partir de la version Blu-Ray (2010) du film. À notre connaissance, cette version correspond au montage définitif du film (la « Director's eut ») , plus en phase avec la vision de George Lucas et constituée de courtes séquences ajoutées et/ou retravaillées numériquement (il est cependant possible de comparer la version de 2010 à celle de 1971 sur le site Internet movie­ censorship.com). Lorsqu'il s'agira de faire référence à des plans ou à des séquences précis dans notre étude, le time-code du Blu-Ray sera présenté de la manière suivante : [Heure:Minutes:Secondes].     CHAPTER 1 Organisms and Human Bodies as Contagions in the Post-Apocalyptic State Robert A. Booth n this chapter, I show how discourses of contagion and pollution not only imbue many post-apocalyptic cinema and television narratives but also mirror public discourse about immigration. Further, I examine the often- I 1 racialized immigrant in post-apocalyptic film and television that is, in essence, a discourse on insider–outsider social divisions and relationships of power. Finally, I elucidate the argument that post-apocalyptic film and television rein- force the primacy of centralized political authority, namely the State, and post- 9/11 post-apocalyptic film in particular reinforces the hegemony of the State. The post-apocalyptic subgenre of science fiction and/or horror has become popular fodder for cinema and television. As Susan Sontag notes, “the science fiction film . is concerned with the aesthetics of destruction, with the pecu- liar beauties to be found in wreaking havoc, making a mess. And it is in the imagery of destruction that the core of a good science fiction film lies.”2 Portrayals of the post-apocalypse often index or echo visual memories of terrible societal traumatic events of the past.3 With the experience of the social, political, economic, and emotional trauma of the 9/11 attacks, one might reasonably assume that Americans would acquire a distaste for graphic destructive violence. Certainly, after the attacks, filmmakers occasionally felt pressured to remove images of the Twin Towers or to change content that might evoke the tragedy, such as planes crashing into skyscrapers. However, post-apocalyptic genres remain ever popular in American television and cinema.

    Born in 1943 to Canadian parents in New York City, Murch graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Johns Hopkins University with a B.A. in Liberal Arts; and subsequently the Graduate Program of USC’s School of Cinema-Television. His 50-year career in cinema stretches back to 1969 (Francis Coppola’s The Rain People) and includes work on THX-1138, The Godfather I, II, and III, American Graffiti, The Conversation, Apocalypse Now, The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Cold Mountain, and many other films with directors such as George Lucas, Fred Zinnemann, Philip Kaufman, Anthony Minghella, Kathryn Bigelow, Sam Mendes and Brad Bird. Murch's pioneering achievements in sound were acknowledged by Coppola in his 1979 Palme d'Or winner Apocalypse Now, for which Murch was granted, in a film-history first, the screen credit of Sound Designer. Murch has been nominated for nine Academy Awards (six for editing and three for sound) and has won three Oscars: for best sound on Apocalypse Now (for which he and his collaborators devised the now-standard 5.1 sound format), and for Best Film Editing and Best Sound for his work on The English Patient. Although this double win in 1997 was unprecedented in the history of Oscars, Murch had previously won a double BAFTA for best sound and best picture editing for The Conversation in 1974. The English Patient was, co-incidentally, the first digitally-edited film to win an editing Oscar. Murch has also edited documentaries: Particle Fever (2013) on the search for the Higgs Boson (winner of the Grierson Award, and the Steven Hawking Medal for Science Communication) and his most recent work is the recently-completed Coup 53 (2019) an independently-financed feature-length documentary on western interference in the politics of Iran which had its world premiere at the 2019 Telluride Film Festival.

His movies changed our modern society and the way we look at aspects of life. George Walton Lucas Jr. was born May 14 1944, in Modesto, California. In his youth he attended the Southern California University for film. He was the Screenwriter and director of his school project and first major film, THX 1138 4EB, which was his first step on the path to becoming a great director. Although George Lucas was mostly known for being the director of movies such as ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Indiana Jones’, he also made many other films, such as ‘Twice Upon A Time’, ‘The Land Before Time’, ‘Willow’, ‘Strange Magic’, ect. Even though we now think of Star Wars as a great movie series, when it was in the making it was very hard to picture it would turn into such an incredible saga. Ever since George Lucas was in High School, he was obsessed with Car Racing, and would often try to repair or create a new engine for his car, until one day when he was racing he got into a really bad accident and was nearly killed, if it wasn't for his seat which ejected him after his seat belt broke.

    Silent Running (Dir. Douglas Trumbull, 1972) Lesson by Kitty Chapman, English teacher, Greenwich Free School English Key Stages 3/4 This lesson uses the film Silent Running as a stimulus for debate, supporting writing to argue. The principal character, Freeman Lowell (Bruce Dern), is alone on a large spacecraft for much of the film, opting to protect a forest he has cultivated on the ship after forests on Earth have become extinct. Students will analyse the ethics of Freeman’s actions, after he kills crewmates in order to preserve the last samples of Earth vegetation and animal life (other than humans) ever to exist. Media Literacy links: Mise-en-scène, symbolism, soundtrack, message. Lesson Objective You will need… • To write to argue the ethics of Freeman Lowell’s DVD of Silent actions in Silent Running. Half the class come up with group responses to a statement justifying killing in some circumstances. The other come up with responses to a statement arguing that humanity has a responsibility to protect nature at all costs. Share responses. Groups allocated one area to look at whilst watching the film, and are given the fertile question above to consider (check for understanding).
