New Suicide Policy and Training In June 2014, Act 71 (Youth Suicide Awareness and Prevention Act) was signed into law in Pennsylvania. This law specifically requires public schools to: (1) adopt a youth suicide awareness and prevention policy; and (2) provide ongoing professional development in youth suicide awareness and prevention for professional educators in all buildings serving students in grades six through twelve. In July of 2015, the Hempfield Area School District Board of Directors approved Policy #819: Suicide Awareness, Prevention, and Response. In August, all Hempfield Area School District professional staff in the three middle schools and high school participated in training with Dr. Paula McCommons , Director of the Student at Risk (STAR) Center at Western Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC). Dr. McCommons presented an overview of the law as well as a comprehensive examination of factors and circum - stances youth face leading to this unfortunate decision choice. She also discussed best practices for responses to student verbalization/ behavior and follow-up referrals to outside agencies for professional support. Administrative regulations and procedures have also been developed by a committee of personnel and are being shared with staff at building-level faculty meetings.

Student Delegate Program The Pennsylvania School Board Association (PSBA) Student Delegate Program is a unique statewide, hands-on, civics-based educational confer - ence that two Hempfield Area Student Council members attend annually in October. Students learn about local governance and experience the democratic process involved in operating a school board meeting. They spend time debating “hot topics” with other students from across the state. This year’s topics included School Safety, Grading, Drug & Alcohol, and Social Media. Hempfield Area attendees, Salvatore Gummo and Tate Yawitz, stated, “We thought the program created an environment where students could debate and discuss issues and topics involved with schools with students from all over the state in a respectful, yet open way. All in all, it was a great conference with great people.”

Maxwell Students Volunteer at Maxwell Elementary has a NEW Playground “Westmoreland Walks” Fourth grade students at Maxwell Elementary School packed bags filled with pens, hand sanitizers, ear buds, sunglasses, magnets, and pamphlets to hand out to the walkers at the fourteenth annual Westmoreland Walks event, held at Twin Lakes Park in October. A portion of the money raised from the walk goes to benefit Westmoreland County breast cancer survivors where they are treated to spa services, education, lunch, and more, at no cost to them. A portion of the proceeds is also donated to the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition. The students really enjoyed packing the bags and supporting the survivors of breast cancer.

Maxwell Elementary students have been enjoying a new playground thanks to an $11,115 grant from Park and Play Structures and a donation of $20,000 from the Maxwell Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO). The oldest portion of the play - ground was cracked and the wooden structure was rotting beneath the surface level, which was the incentive for the PTO to start raising funds. A ceremony took place on October 29, 2015, to dedicate the new playground. Each homeroom teacher selected three or four students who had demonstrated excellent behavior to have their picture taken on the new equipment. Thank you to Park and Play Structures and the Maxwell PTO for making the new playground possible. 22 Hempfield Area School District Elementary School
