It’s a terrific occasion to recommit ourselves, inside and out, to the work of discipleship. As we reflect on why Jesus was born at Bethlehem, and why He was revealed as “light to the nations,” we all should reflect on our own resolve to witness to Him as we live our daily lives. Can we live in the light of the Lord? Can we be catalysts to share and pass on that light? The mystics report that at the very mention of the name of Jesus, a myriad of angels hover around the person who announces His name with faith and devotion. Important it is, then, to constantly say His name with reverence, to pray in His name, to share in the works that His name inspires and characterize our lives with everything that His name represents. The Baptism of the Lord has to do with His identity. It also has to do with our own identity, yes, we who have been baptized in His name. Baptism puts us into special community with Christ Jesus himself. Bringing us into the love of Father, Son and Spirit, it paves the way for us to receive grace, and to be oriented to encounter Christ in all the other Sacraments. Baptism launched Jesus into His public ministry. It also has a similar effect on us by the power of the Spirit. Our very identify, animated with baptismal grace, prompts us toward finding and living our holy vocations in the Lord’s service and in faith, hope and love in the context of life in the Church. Baptism also directs our lives with eternity in view, a reflection that should merit our daily thought and reflection. It is impressive to consider the many ministries that the Church provides. More impressive still are the manifold charitable works of the Church in our Archdiocese and the Church at large. Baptism propels us into more than just attending Church.
