TWO RAINMAKERS PAUL THE FEARLESS LEADER 196 ven back then, I was taking on far too many jobs,” Def Jam Chairman Paul Rosenberg recalls of his early career. As the longtime man- Eager of Eminem, Rosenberg has been a substantial player in the unfolding of the ‘‘ modern era and the dominance of hip-hop in the last two decades. His work in that capacity naturally positioned him to seize the reins at the major label that brought rap to the mainstream. Before he began managing the best- selling rapper of all time, Rosenberg was an attorney, hustling in Detroit and New York but always intimately connected with the Detroit rap scene. Later on, he was a boutique-label owner, film producer and, finally, major-label boss. The success he’s had thus far required savvy and finesse, no question. But it’s been Rosenberg’s fearlessness and commitment to breaking barriers that have secured him this high perch. Eminem quickly gained popularity in 1999 with his major-label debut album, The Slim Shady LP, which won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. The following album, The Marshall Mathers LP, became the fastest-selling solo album in United States history.[2] It brought Eminem increased popularity, including his own record label, Shady Records, and brought his group project, D12, to mainstream recognition. The Marshall Mathers LP and his third album, The Eminem Show, also won Grammy Awards, making Eminem the first artist to win Best Rap Album for three consecutive LPs. He then won the award again in 2010 for his album Relapse and in 2011 for his album Recovery, giving him a total of 13 Grammys in his career. In 2003, he won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Lose Yourself" from the film, 8 Mile, in which he also played the lead. "Lose Yourself" would go on to become the longest running No. 1 hip hop single.[3] Eminem then went on hiatus after touring in 2005.

  • Depictions of Numeracy and Mathematics Within Hip Hop Music
Journal of Mathematics Education © Education for All December 2016, Vol. 9, No. 2, pp. 53-71 Learning from The College Dropout: Depictions of Numeracy and Mathematics within Hip Hop Music Daniel A. Tillman The University of Texas at El Paso, U.S.A. This study analyzed popular Hip Hop music albums (n=6) presenting narratives about Hip Hop musicians achieving success, so as to determine if the messages disseminated in the albums supported or refuted the heuristic notion that teachers and parents tell children: “You need math skills to get a good job.” Selected albums were analyzed, and each was coded for references to mathematics (including numeracy, numbers, or statistics); then coded data was tabulated to determine any patterns in support or refutation of the importance of mathematical skills and abilities to succeed in a Hip Hop career according to the narratives presented within these albums. The discussion and conclusions sections of this paper then examines the consequences of these findings in terms of developing programs and pedagogy that positively impacts minority adolescents’ perceptions of mathematics, and their attitudes toward mathematics-related careers such as the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields. Key Words: Minorities and mathematics, Hip Hop music and culture, language of schooling, E-E (entertainment-education, edutainment). The Process Standards created by NCTM (2000) specify the need for maintaining high-quality communication and representation of mathematical ideas in order for students to learn mathematics. Establishing healthy lines of communication often involves the deliberate coordination of multiple representations, showing and demonstrating the same mathematical concepts from different perspectives (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics [NCTM], 2000).

The soci- olinguistics and psycholinguistics behind Marshall Mathers and his music, though, are deserving of a PBS documentary. Eminem capitalizes on his lin- guistic genie with as much savvy as he does on his alter egos. He “flips the linguistics,” as he boasts in “Fast Lane” from Bad Meets Evil’s 2011 album Hell: The Sequel. As its title suggests, this essay focuses initially on the fact that rap is deeply rooted in black English, relating this to Eminem in the context of much information on the language of (Detroit) blacks. This linguistic excur- sion may not endear me to readers who hate grammar (or to impatient fans), but it ultimately helps to understand how Eminem and hip hop managed to adopt each other.

  • Assessing the Future Ip Landscape of Music’S Cash Cow: What Happens When the Live Concert Goes Virtual
\\jciprod01\productn\N\NYU\91-2\NYU205.txt unknown Seq: 1 11-MAY-16 12:42 ASSESSING THE FUTURE IP LANDSCAPE OF MUSIC’S CASH COW: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE LIVE CONCERT GOES VIRTUAL CHARLES H. LOW* If piracy has been the bane of the music industry, and live performances are a financial buoy, what happens when live performances are ported to a virtual medium that all of a sudden may be subject to piracy again? This Note examines the various intellectual property frameworks through which one can look at the protectable elements of a live show or concert and what happens to the pro- tectability of those elements once the show is ported to virtual reality. Given that technology to date has had a much larger impact on recorded music than on live performances, the introduction of virtual reality technology has serious disruptive potential. This Note argues that one can use existing intellectual property law to weave a complex web of protected elements around less traditional targets of IP like stage, set, and lighting design, background visuals, live performers, and props. This web of intellectual property protection will encourage strong contracting and yield more avenues for resisting piracy in the virtual reality world.
