Kashmiri Herath In Kashmiri Shivratri is known as Har- ratri or Herath meaning ‘Shiva’s night’. It marks the night of Lord Shiva’s wedding to Goddess Parvati. Preparations for the special occasion get underway 23 days before the actual day. It includes: dusting the house, washing and cleaning the kitchen, bringing out ‘herath- special’ utensils, purchasing puja items, giving gifts to married daughters and also buying new clothes. Vatuk puja When Kashmiri Pandits were driven out of the valley in the first half of the 15th century, a few families in the remote villages stayed back. It is speculated that these families must have started worshiping the Vatuka for their protection. The custom having been continued by others when they returned to the valley in the later part of that century. Kashmiri Pandits worship Bhairwa Vtknath and hence the worship is called Vtk puja. Bhairwa as per Kashmir Shaivism is a being who through his saddhna has risen to a status just next to Lord Shiva As per Kashmir Shaivism philosophy the highest state a being can achieve through his saddhna is that of a Bhirwa. Eight Bhirwas have achieved that status so far, for whom we have eight dedicated temples in Kashmir mostly around Srinagar city. Vtknath Bhairwa is one of them who receives extensive worship on Shivratri eve . Before the start of the puja, two large vessels representing Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are embellished with flower garlands and filled with walnuts to the top. Then a definite number of small earthen pots are filled with water and nut symbolizing the Ghanas and other deities. These pitchers and pots, collectively are called Vatuk. A red thread is tied around the mouths of these utensils and a symbol of ‘Om’ is drawn on them. The ritual worship continues till late into the night and concludes with the singing of devotional hymns in praise of Lord Shiva and finally aarti. Herath Feast After a day of fasting dinner is definitely the highlight on this particular day. Everyone enjoys delectable Kashmiri dishes. In most households, multiple vegetarian and non- vegetarian dishes are prepared as part of a grand dinner spread. Some of the dishes cooked are Haak, Nadur, Mong Dal, Rogan Josh, Match, Gaad etc Salaam! The day after Maha Shivaratri Puja is called salaam, a Persian word for greeting. It is a day of fun and feasting, a sort of Thanksgiving Day when relations, friends and colleagues would exchange greetings. The singing bards and the poor would visit Hindu homes and take their share of Shivaratri presents in cash or kind. Herath Kharach It is another much-awaited and fun-loving custom of Herath. Just a day after the puja, the head of the family offers money to children, younger ones in the family. The excitement around this traditional practice is immense, where children sometimes wake up early to wish everyone ‘Herath Poshte’, and ask them for their ‘Shivaratri earning’. The Mahabharata of Krishna-Dwaipayana Vyasa SALYA PARVA translated by Kesari Mohan Ganguli In parentheses Publications Sanskrit Series Cambridge, Ontario 2002 Salya Parva Section I Om! Having bowed down unto Narayana and Nara, the most exalted of male beings, and the goddess Saraswati, must the word Jaya be uttered. Janamejaya said, “After Karna had thus been slain in battle by Savyasachin, what did the small (unslaughtered) remnant of the Kauravas do, O regenerate one? Beholding the army of the Pandavas swelling with might and energy, what behaviour did the Kuru prince Suyodhana adopt towards the Pandavas, thinking it suitable to the hour? I desire to hear all this. Tell me, O foremost of regenerate ones, I am never satiated with listening to the grand feats of my ancestors.” Vaisampayana said, “After the fall of Karna, O king, Dhritarashtra’s son Suyodhana was plunged deep into an ocean of grief and saw despair on every side. Indulging in incessant lamentations, saying, ‘Alas, oh Karna! Alas, oh Karna!’ he proceeded with great difficulty to his camp, accompanied by the unslaughtered remnant of the kings on his side. Thinking of the slaughter of the Suta’s son, he could not obtain peace of mind, though comforted by those kings with excellent reasons inculcated by the scriptures. Regarding destiny and necessity to be all- powerful, the Kuru king firmly resolved on battle. Having duly made Salya the generalissimo of his forces, that bull among kings, O monarch, proceeded for battle, accompanied by that unslaughtered remnant of his forces. Then, O chief of Bharata’s race, a terrible battle took place between the troops of the Kurus and those of the Pandavas, resembling that between the gods and the Asuras.

  • Kali, Untamed Goddess Power and Unleashed Sexuality: A
Journal of Asian Research Vol. 1, No. 1, 2017 www.scholink.org/ojs/index.php/jar Kali, Untamed Goddess Power and Unleashed Sexuality: A Study of the ‘Kalika Purana’ of Bengal Saumitra Chakravarty1* 1 Post-Graduate Studies in English, National College, Bangalore, India * Saumitra Chakravarty, E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This paper attempts to analyse the paradox inherent in the myth of Kali, both in her iconic delineation and the rituals associated with her worship as depicted in the twelfth century Kalika Purana. The black goddess Kali breaks conventional stereotypes of feminine beauty and sexuality in Hindu goddess mythology. She is the dominant sexual partner straddling the prone Siva and the wild warrior goddess drinking demon blood. She is originally depicted as a symbol of uncontrolled fury emerging from the fair, beautiful goddess Ambika in the battle with the demons in older goddess texts. Thereafter she gains independent existence both as the dark, mysterious and sexually demanding version of the more benign and auspicious Parvati and the Primordial Goddess Power pre-dating the Hindu trinity of male gods, the Universal Mother Force which embraces both good and evil, gods and demons in the Kalika Purana. Unlike other goddess texts which emphasize Kali’s role in the battle against the demons, the Kalika Purana’s focus is on her sexuality and her darkly sensual beauty. Equally it is on the heterodoxical rituals associated with her worship involving blood and flesh offerings, wine and the use of sexual intercourse as opposed to Vedic rituals. Keywords kali, female, sexuality, primordial, goddess, paradox 1.

Every living being has some of such "magic powers" - a special ability, or strength, or beauty - but not everyone has the same powers, or a power to an absolute degree. Among the materially embodied beings, such powers are always conditioned by circumstances and exhausted when they are used. Through the correct practice of yoga, a sadhaka can develop special vibhutis up to the level of siddhi ("perfection"), usually listed as being able to become extremely small (anima siddhi), extremely large (mahima siddhi), extremely light (laghima siddhi), reconfiguring the patterns of material atoms (vasitva siddhi), materializing things by attracting atoms from other places (prapti siddhi), controlling the minds of others (isitva siddhi), assuming any shape or form (kamavasayita siddhi), and manifesting all kinds of wonders (prakamya siddhi). Another of such powers consists in entering and controlling the body of another, living or dead (parakaya pravesa). Also, the knowledge of genuine yoga enables the serious sadhaka to control the material elements (such as fire, water, air etc), control the weather (call or dispel storms and lightning, bring or withhold rain, etc), travel in different dimensions and planets without any vehicle, call the dead back into their old body (usually temporarily), and so on.
