FASIG-TIPTON OCTOBER AT 252 MARES BRED, JUSTIFY, MENDELSSOHN LEAD THE WAY FINISHES STRONG by T.D. Thornton Two sons of Scat Daddy--Justify and Mendelssohn--each covered 252 mares while standing their first seasons at Coolmore America=s Ashford Stud this year, knocking Spendthrift Farm=s Into Mischief (Harlan=s Holiday), who bred 241 mares, off his two-year reign as North America=s top-covering stallion. Coolmore=s (Indian Charlie) also covered 241 mares. Back in 2016, Uncle Mo led the continent with 253 mares bred. These statistics are based on 2019 reports of mares bred in North America (RMB) that were released Thursday by The Jockey Club (TJC). Cont. p12

Over the four-day auction, 1008 transactions were recorded for gross receipts of $38,258,900. The cumulative average was $37,955, bettering the previous record of $36,507 set in 2017 and besting last year=s mark of $35,576 by 6.7%. The median was $13,000, a dip of 13.3% from 12 months ago. The RNA rate was 24.5%--it was 22.7% last year. The gross was also a record, but to be expected given this was the largest catalogue in October sale history. AIt was an outstanding week with solid, consistent trade from beginning to end,@ said Fasig-Tipton President and CEO Boyd Browning, Jr. AIt=s kind of a testament to our industry that we=ve been selling yearlings for over three months and still, there=s quite a bit of demand for many of the horses, but not all the horses, as we know and understand. Coming into the sale, realistically, we would=ve said, >We hope we can be similar to last year=s levels.= To exceed those levels is, frankly, really encouraging and I think it=s an indication of an increase in the quality of horses being brought to this sale by the consignors. Fasig-Tipton October cont. from p1 Browning continued, AThis creates a good feeling heading into the Breeders= Cup and there=s a little sale on Nov. 5 (the Fasig- Tipton November sale) that we=re looking forward to, as well. At the end of the day, we were well supported by consignors with more horses than we=ve ever had, and I think the best quality we=ve ever had. @ Thursday=s fourth and final session saw 268 head change hands for $10,681,700 at an average of $39,857--the highest it had been all week. The median was $13,500. The RNA rate was 19.3% as sellers looked to move along what they could and buyers tried to fill their quotas last minute. The sale and session topper was hip 1503, a $560,000 Candy Ride (Arg) colt consigned by Reiley McDonald=s Eaton Sales and purchased by Carlo Vaccarezza with the intention to resell him at next year=s Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale. AWe=re actually having the best day today that we=ve had the whole week,@ Taylor Made Sales Agency=s Mark Taylor said mid- session Thursday. AThe thing about this sale is that it=s not catalogued by quality [like Keeneland September]... Here, it=s a total wildcard where you might get all the better horses landing on the fourth day of the sale--you don=t know what=s going to happen. I think the market is just like it has been. In this sale, you=re always going to get a higher percentage of horses who don=t vet because sometimes that=s why they=re here. They didn=t get sold at a previous sale because they didn=t vet, and now they=re here and they still don=t vet. Now, whether that=s going to have any effect on them running, probably not, but in the veterinary community=s mind, there=s something wrong with them. So, you=re always going to get a little higher percentage of horses that you=re just up against it with right from the beginning because the vet sheet looks bad. However, it=s the last stop on the calendar, so sellers usually get a little more realistic with their reserves unless they don=t mind going to the races or the 2-year-old sales. It=s a hard sale to handicap, but I think the market=s just the same--quality=s selling, but with everything else, you have to be very careful.@ Action returns to Fasig-Tipton=s Newtown Paddocks Nov. 5 for the star-studded November sale of breeding stock.

Good End Result for Candy Ride Colt

Carlo Vaccarezza | Fasig-Tipton Thursday=s sale and session-topping Candy Ride (Arg) colt (hip 1503) has had an eventful few months. He appeared to be seriously injured in a paddock accident on breeder Gail Peyton=s Forging Oaks Farm in Lexington, but his superficial wounds healed up and he went on to bring $560,000 from Carlo Vaccarezza. He was originally slated to be sold at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale. AA week before Saratoga, 2:30 a.m. in the morning, the neighbor=s five cattle got loose and ran through the farm,@ explained consignor Reiley McDonald of Eaton Sales. A[The cattle] ran this colt and another one through their paddock fences, this colt hit a pole. He had a really nasty cut, but it didn=t involve the muscle or any nerves. It=s just a very bad blemish. It goes to prove how many good horsemen are here that are willing to look past a blemish and kick on and buy a horse. They think, >Who cares? If he runs, I don=t care.=@ The Feb. 18 foal was purchased in utero for $475,000 at the 2017 Keeneland November sale. Out of the winning dam Vanquished (Empire Maker), he is a half-brother to MGSW Takeover Target (Harlan=s Holiday). The topper is out of a half- sister to MGISW Critical Eye (Dynaformer). AIt was a nice sale,@ McDonald said. AMrs. Peyton has a nice broodmare band of 15 mares. I=m just very happy for her. We thought he would be unsellable for awhile when he first did it. To look at it, those injuries looked so awful, and then they somehow cleaned up. From her to go from, >Wow, we have nothing here= to >Yes, he=s still a top horse and we still own the mare and the value=s still there.= It=s a very good thing for a woman who=s put so much into the game.@ He added, ANeedless to say, the cattle have been moved.@ Vanquished produced an Into Mischief filly Mar. 2 and was

Horse Breeders Association, pointed to several reasons for the positive trend. AWe have a real good program, probably one of the best in the country,@ Sanfratello told TDN. AA few years back [potential horse owners] were a little leery about money that was being [diverted by the state] from the Race Horse Development Fund. And a couple of years ago, the legislature put that money in a trust, so it basically can=t be touched [by other entities]. So now people have more faith that the money will be there, and are making a commitment to Pennsylvania. AWe also raised the breeder awards to PA-sired horses to 40% at the beginning of 2017,@ Sanfratello continued. AWhat that did was [assure] people that if they breed to a PA sire, they can recoup a good portion of their money in breeder awards, so it makes it a better business model for them. We also moved the maiden breeder award for PA-sired horses to 50%. And we didn=t forget about the non-PA sired horses either. We raised that maiden breeder award to 25%. So what all that did was [cause] a big influx of new stallions. Last year we had probably 10 or 12 new stallions come into Pennsylvania.@ Among the top 10 breeding jurisdictions, California reported the largest 2019 RMB drop, declining 18.7%. Two other significant breeding states continue to post RMB declines, but not as sharply as in recent seasons: New York was down 5.1% in 2019 (on the heels of a 15.9% dip in 2018 and a 12.1% decline in 2017). Florida was down 2.8% (after falling 7.5% in 2018 and plummeting 24.8% in 2017). BIG CHANGES AT BARN 4 by Diana Pikulski

Debby Thomas photo The State Farm Work Center in Goochland County, Virginia, is located in the middle of beautiful hunt country and surrounded by a very tight community of successful horse people. When the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) established the Second Chances program, commonly referred to as Barn 4, at the State Farm Work Center (which was then known as the James River Correctional Facility) 12 years ago, the locals formed a volunteer oversight committee and took the reins. The self-motivated and inspired group continuously put their heads together to innovate and expand upon the program. Improving the lives of the horses and the men at Barn 4 became their collective goal and they never looked back. The committee members' personal commitment to that goal was evident in how involved in the daily workings of the program they became and how they went to new depths of understanding the plight of offenders in trying to reenter the community and the workforce. The committee approached fundraising with the same vigor resulting in a multifaceted development platform including unique and fun events connecting the surrounding community to the program and its horses. In terms of Timeform ratings, he=s the very best among PIERRO, THE SIRE Lonhro=s impressive list of major winners with a mark of 128. Pierro hails from an excellent European family tracing back to FLYING HIGH Cambretta (USA), a mare bought for US$1 million by Sheikh Mohammed at Keeneland November in 1982. That fact alone tells us just how special Pierro=s family is and it is also indicative of how good Pierro was as a racehorse that, aside from the 130-rated miler Mark of Distinction (GB), Pierro is the best in the family in nearly 30 years. It=s clearly a female line packed with stamina. Pierro=s dam is inbred to the Derby winner Mill Reef (USA) and the first three sires in her pedigree are Daylami (Ire), Sadler=s Wells (USA) and Shirley Heights (GB) who were all effective over 2400 metres as racehorses and whose mature stock had an average winning distance of at least 2000 metres. So, there should be no surprise that Pierro could win a Champagne over 1600 metres at 2-years-old and run so well in a Cox Plate over 2040 metres at 3-years-old. In fact, given his background, it=s all the more remarkable that he was fast Pierro | Coolmore Stud enough and precocious enough to win a Slipper. by John Boyce Group 1 winners With all the chatter about speed and stamina, it=s always In his first four seasons with runners, Pierro has already sired heartening to unearth a stallion that can sire top-class five Group 1 winners. Clearly his best in terms of outright class is racehorses at both ends of the distance spectrum. In fact, you the Timeform 126-rated Pierata, who won the G1 All Aged S. could say that Danehill (USA) set the standard: his stock won over 1400 metres last autumn and looks capable of scoring a Group 1s from 1000 metres to 3200 metres. Group 1 victory over 1200 metres at some point. In Pierro, Australia has found another such sire. Even though Contrast him to his sire=s other Group 1 winners, Arcadia it's near impossible to match Danehill=s exploits, the fact that his Queen in the 1800 metre Kingstown Town Classic, Shadow Hero stock are showing a similar versatility will stand him in good in the recent Spring Champion over 2000 metres, Levendi in the stead. The son of Lonhro has made an excellent start to the 2400 metre Australian Derby and Pinot in the 2500 metre VRC current season, siring five Group winners so far B more than any Oaks. other sire.
