H-Environment Roundtable Reviews, Vol. 10, No. 5 (2020) 2 Introduction by Kara Murphy Schlichting, Queens College CUNY n North America, winter is on the horizon. In my home of New York City, winter can be blustery and cold. This city is a fair weather metropolis, seasonally I embracing outdoor life in warm weather only. The coming winter of 2020-21, with the ongoing need for social distancing and outdoor congregations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will likely force a reconsideration of the typical retreat indoors at the arrival of cold. From this vantage point of changing seasons and the need to rethink winter practices, Thomas Wickman’s Snowshoe Country: An Environmental and Cultural History of Winter in the Early American Northeast is an reminder that the interiority of a New York winter is a construct of this community and era. -

Porter MAKING AND Chloe Porter UNMAKING IN EARLY MODERN ENGLISH DRAMA Why are early modern English dramatists preoccupied with unfinished processes of ‘making’ and ‘unmaking’? And what did ‘finished’ or ‘incomplete’ mean for spectators of plays and visual works in this period? Making and unmaking in early IN EARLY MODERN ENGLISH DRAMA IN EARLY UNMAKING AND MAKING modern English drama is about the prevalence and significance of visual things that are ‘under construction’ in early modern plays. Contributing to challenges to the well-worn narrative of ‘iconophobic’ early modern English culture, it explores the drama as a part of a lively post-Reformation visual world. Interrogating the centrality of concepts of ‘fragmentation’ and ‘wholeness’ in critical approaches to this period, it opens up new interpretations of the place of aesthetic form in early modern culture. An interdisciplinary study, this book argues that the idea of ‘finish’ had transgressive associations in the early modern imagination. It centres on the depiction of incomplete visual practices in works by playwrights including Shakespeare, John Lyly, and Robert Greene. The first book of its kind to connect dramatists’ attitudes to the visual with questions of materiality, Making and Unmaking in Early Modern English Drama draws on a rich range of illustrated examples. Plays are discussed alongside contexts and themes, including iconoclasm, painting, sculpture, clothing and jewellery, automata, and invisibility. Asking what it meant for Shakespeare and his contemporaries to ‘begin’ or ‘end’ a literary or visual work, this book is invaluable for scholars and students of early modern English literature, drama, visual culture, material culture, theatre history, history and aesthetics. -

An Elegant Solution Anne Atkins
** PRESS RELEASE FROM MALCOLM DOWN / RHODA HARDIE PR ** ** 24 December 2018 marks 100 years of Kings College’s Nine Lessons and Carols service, broadcast on Christmas Eve ** PUBLISHING 6 DECEMBER 2018 An Elegant Solution Anne Atkins Anne Atkins’ first novel in 20 years brings together a race against time, a terrorist threat and her personal insights into Asperger Syndrome ‘When someone mentions the City of Cambridge, you probably think of a particularly iconic building… its graceful face overlooking the sighing river, smiling enigmatically on the loves and ambitions, the hopes and dreams of all those who have ever travelled the lazy Cam in midsummer... and it’s a safe bet that the one thought which doesn’t occur to you is that the Chapel might not be there by Christmas.’ Described by Mishal Husain as ‘a story with a tremendous sense of place’, Anne Atkins’ first novel in 20 years follows the lives of autistic junior research fellow Theo and first year undergraduate Charlotte, thrown together in an unlikely friendship as they investigate a deadly threat to their beloved city. Along the way, we meet a host of colourful characters, including Charlotte’s friend Suki, traumatised by a sexual assault from a senior tutor; young chorister Hui, whose family’s cryptocurrency factory in China could have a vital role to play in averting disaster; academic Clare, wary of romance after having her heart broken; and master of the college Peter, juggling pressures from the BBC with the security demands of a high-profile Royal Visitor attending the famous Nine Lessons and Carols centenary service. -

YOUR O.A.T. ADVENTURE TRAVEL PLANNING GUIDE® The Baltic Capitals & St. Petersburg 2022 Small Groups: 8-16 travelers—guaranteed! (average of 13) Overseas Adventure Travel ® The Leader in Personalized Small Group Adventures on the Road Less Traveled 1 Dear Traveler, At last, the world is opening up again for curious travel lovers like you and me. And the O.A.T. Enhanced! The Baltic Capitals & St. Petersburg itinerary you’ve expressed interest in will be a wonderful way to resume the discoveries that bring us so much joy. You might soon be enjoying standout moments like these: What I love about the little town of Harmi, Estonia, is that it has a lot of heart. Its residents came together to save their local school, and now it’s a thriving hub for community events. Harmi is a new partner of our Grand Circle Foundation, and you’ll live a Day in the Life here, visiting the school and a family farm, and sharing a farm-to-table lunch with our hosts. I love the outdoors and I love art, so my walk in the woods with O.A.T. Trip Experience Leader Inese turned into something extraordinary when she led me along the path called the “Witches Hill” in Lithuania. It’s populated by 80 wooden sculptures of witches, faeries, and spirits that derive from old pagan beliefs. You’ll go there, too (and I bet you’ll be as surprised as I was to learn how prevalent those pagan practices still are.) I was also surprised—and saddened—to learn how terribly the Baltic people were persecuted during the Soviet era. -

Resourcing Sustainable Church: a Time to Change - Together
RESOURCING SUSTAINABLE CHURCH: A TIME TO CHANGE - TOGETHER Transforming lives in Greater Lincolnshire 1 Foreword from The Bishop of Lincoln Returning to Lincoln after almost two years’ absence gives me the opportunity to see and evaluate the progress that has been made to address the issues we face as a diocese. Many of the possibilities that are placed before you in this report were already under discussion in 2019. What this report, and the work that lies behind it, does is to put flesh on the bones. It gives us a diocese the opportunity to own up to and address the issues we face at this time. I am happy strongly to recommend this report. It comes with my full support and gratitude to those who have contributed so far. What it shows is that everything is possible if we trust in God and each other. Of course, this is only a first step in a process of development and change. Much as some of us, including me at times, might like to look back nostalgically to the past – the good news is that God is calling us into something new and exciting. What lies ahead will not be easy – as some hard decisions will need to be taken. But my advice is that there will never be a better opportunity to work together to uncover and build the Kingdom of God in Greater Lincolnshire. I urge the people of God in this diocese to join us on this journey. +Christopher Lincoln: Bishop of Lincoln 2 Introduction Resourcing Sustainable Church: A Time to Change - Together sets a vision for a transformed church. -

6th February 2021 Dear all You may have heard the news that the Bishop of Lincoln, the Rt Revd Christopher Lowson, has finally had his suspension removed, and can return to his role as diocesan bishop. The Church Times reported that Bishop Lowson has accepted a formal rebuke for the mishandling of a safeguarding disclosure, and has apologised unreservedly for his “error of judgement”. The rebuke will stay on his file, and he has agreed to retrain in safeguarding matters. There has never been any suggestion that Bishop Lowson was responsible for any act of abuse. In a statement issued on Monday, he said: “I offer an unreserved apology for my error of judgement in the way I handled a disclosure about a member of clergy in the Lincoln diocese in early 2019. I regret the way I handled the matter, not least because I have always sought to take safeguarding matters extremely seriously.” What has been regretted by all involved is the length of time that it has taken to resolve the matter – 20 months. To put that in perspective, he was suspended before I took up my role here. I met with Bishop Christopher just after I was appointed, and was impressed by his commitment to good safeguarding practices. It is quite right that all clergy are expected to act professionally and appropriately, and that there should be some sanctions when they don’t. But it is generally accepted that the Clergy Discipline Measure (CDM) is not fit for purpose, being unwieldy, very time-consuming, and incredibly destructive in its process.
