    Velazquez, John R. (HOF 2012): Born: November 24, 1971. From: Carolina, Puerto Rico. Began his riding career when he entered jockey school in Puerto Rico in June 1988 and was riding in his native country a year and a half later. His first winner came at El Comandante in 1990. Launched his New York career in March 1990 under the guidance of retired Hall of Fame jockey Angel Cordero Jr., who works as his agent to this day. First U.S. win was on My Brother Jay, March 12, 1990 at Aqueduct. Earned the Eclipse Award as Outstanding jockey in 2004-05. Has 4 Triple Crown races: In 2007, won the Belmont Stakes (and his first Triple Crown race) on Rags to Riches. In 2011, won his first Kentucky Derby-G1, riding Animal Kingdom; he picked up the mount the day before the race when early Derby favorite Uncle Mo was scratched because of illness. Uncle Mo was Velazquez’ third Derby mount to scratch close to the race; he was the regular rider for Quality Road and Eskendereya, who were both scratched a week before the Kentucky Derby, in 2009 and 2010, respectively. For the past Wfew years at this time Blood-Horse has asked prominent breeders to share their philosophies of choosing stallions for their mares, and this time around we travel out to California to talk with John Liviakis who, when not running his Liviakis Financial Com- munications, one of the leading financial public relations firms in the world, keeps busy reading pedigree analyses and checking in on his broodmares in Kentucky and Florida. Liviakis, a former Standardbred trainer, has bred grade I winner Gomo, multiple graded stakes winners Handsome Mike and Reneesgotzip, grad- ed stakes winners Tommy Macho, Mighty Caroline, and Renee’s Titan, and stakes winner Renee’s Queen. Although all of the above won added-money events within the last five years, Liviakis no longer owns any of their dams. Because Liviakis invests heavily in the young companies he helps to devel- op, his disposable income ebbs and flows, affecting whether he holds or sells bloodstock. “When you’re a breeder and have all these foals every year, your numbers go up geometrically,” Liviakis said from his Mill Valley, Calif., headquarters. “Unless you’re extremely wealthy, you can’t handle the numbers. So I’ve had to sell, and you can only sell the ones people want. Thomas This year’s Kentucky Derby report was in jeopardy. Not because of all that has been going on in the world, but because the uncertainty and overwhelming emotional stress in my personal life had me close to pulling out the white flag. My dearly beloved life-partner Tonia, who had been battling cancer since the summer of 2018, passed away in March. Breast cancer had traveled to her brain, (my father died of brain cancer, also at home, in 2002) and two days after my birthday on October 22, 2020, we were told Tonia had 6 months to live. She passed on March 6th, 2021. Two days after Tonia left us, my mother, who I also am caregiver for, fell and fractured her hip. At the writing of this very sentence my mother is yet in a rehab facility struggling to recover. It goes without saying that as March churned into April, doing our 11th derby report wasn’t high on my list of things to do. But there was something that wasn’t right about not doing our analysis of the contenders. It was a quiet nudge I was unable to ignore. I just couldn’t let the horses run away from me. I began to realize that not doing the report wasn’t an option, I needed the distraction. Horses are my passion and racing is the sport I love.

BROODMARE ANALYSIS REPORT TrueNicks: An Explanation Nicks in History Compatibilities between stallions from one sire line with mares of another sire line has helped shape the breed since the Eclipse/Herod cross of the late 18th century. These successful crosses, called nicks, have impacted Thoroughbred development through such examples as Hermit/Stockwell, Lexington/Glencoe, Bend Or/Macaroni, and Phalaris/Chaucer. In the modern era, the prolific Mr. Prospector/Northern Dancer cross has produced outstanding racehorses and sires such as Kingmambo, Distorted Humor, and Elusive Quality. Fast-Forward to the 21st Century Computer databases have made it possible to measure and rate nicks, giving rise to a commercial market for such statistics. The first nick ratings offered to the public, though popular, were compromised by incomplete data and yielded results based on hypothetical rather than actual opportunity. This statistical gap was the impetus behind the development of TrueNicks.
