  • Hansen Is Back, Wins Gotham Stakes
THE WOODFORD SUN, Versailles, Ky. March 8, 2012 11 Hansen is back, wins Gotham Stakes BY RICK CAPONE WOODFORD SUN SPORTS EDITOR After suffering the only de- feat of his career to Algorithms this past January at Gulfstream Park in the Holy Bull Stakes (G3), some “experts” won- dered if Hansen would still be strong enough in his three- year-old campaign this year to be a top contender for the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on Saturday, May 4. Well, Hansen, who won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) at Churchill this past November to end his undefeated juvenile season, gave notice to all those doubters on Saturday, March 3, that he is still a horse to contend with on the 2012 Derby Trail. In a strong performance, in which he rated behind horses for the fi rst time in his career, Hansen took charge of the race on the fi nal turn, then charged down the stretch to win the 60th running of the $400,000 Gotham Stakes (G3) at Aq- ueduct by three lengths over My Adonis. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 30, 2021 TAKING STOCK: UNIFIED, PA RAIDS THAT YIELDED >SIGNIFICANT CONTRABAND' NOW TERMED AS MOHAYMEN, GORMLEY >NOTHING OF SUBSTANCE' by T.D. Thornton One month after initially stating at a Pennsylvania Horse ARE ONES TO WATCH Racing Commission (PHRC) meeting that May backstretch raids at Parx yielded a "significant amount of contraband" and "items that have no business on the backside," Tom Chuckas, the director of Thoroughbred horse racing for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, gave a Tuesday update that now describes the yield from those searches in markedly less sensationalistic terms. "In the last months, enforcement action was taken both at Penn National and at Parx," Chuckas told commissioners at the June 29 PHRC meeting during his monthly briefing. AThat enforcement action consisted ofYvehicle searches, barn searches, vet trailer searches. In addition, we did out-of-competition testing both at Penn National and at Parx, and the preliminary results from these investigative enforcement actions is very, very minor infractions. • How John Liviakis Selects Mares and Plans Matings
PHOTO CREDIT How John Liviakis selects mares and plans matings 22 / BloodHorse.com / FEBRUARY 13, 2016 / TheBloodHorse / BloodHorse BEHIND THE BREEDINGS BY LENNY SHULMAN hen the first blanket of snow covers the Bluegrass, we know that breeding season is about to commence. For the past Wfew years at this time Blood-Horse has asked prominent breeders to share their philosophies of choosing stallions for their mares, and this time around we travel out to California to talk with John Liviakis who, when not running his Liviakis Financial Com- munications, one of the leading financial public relations firms in the world, keeps busy reading pedigree analyses and checking in on his broodmares in Kentucky and Florida. Liviakis, a former Standardbred trainer, has bred grade I winner Gomo, multiple graded stakes winners Handsome Mike and Reneesgotzip, grad- ed stakes winners Tommy Macho, Mighty Caroline, and Renee’s Titan, and stakes winner Renee’s Queen. Although all of the above won added-money events within the last five years, Liviakis no longer owns any of their dams. Because Liviakis invests heavily in the young companies he helps to devel- op, his disposable income ebbs and flows, affecting whether he holds or sells bloodstock. “When you’re a breeder and have all these foals every year, your numbers go up geometrically,” Liviakis said from his Mill Valley, Calif., headquarters. “Unless you’re extremely wealthy, you can’t handle the numbers. So I’ve had to sell, and you can only sell the ones people want. But besides the financial rea- sons, I’m also a big believer in the fact that mares regress in their productivity as they get older and have more foals.

Because of his late start and huge jump from a maiden sprint to his Holy Bull score, Zito is handling him very carefully. He is even keeping him at the quieter Palm Meadows until Derby week, feeling the colt trained at Churchill for a month last fall and broke his maiden there, so there is no rush to get there. There is always a risk having such a lightly raced horse as the top- ranked Derby horse, but he has certainly accomplished a lot in his four starts.
