• Launched his career in March 1990 under the guidance of retired Hall of Fame jockey Angel Cordero Jr., who was his longtime agent before Velazquez made the move to Ron Anderson in February 2020.

• Began his riding career when he entered jockey school in Puerto Rico in June 1988 and was riding in his native country a year and a half later. His first winner was Rodas at El Comandante in 1990.
