The lake is surrounded by the dramatic high fells of , , Scarf Gap and and to the south the summer pastures of Warnscale, Haystacks and .

Buttermere Lake itself is one of the smaller lakes thus making it one of the quieter areas of the Lake District. The scenery is stunning and it is the perfect place to come and relax or for the more energetic there is lots of exploring to do around the lake, where there are picnic spots and refreshments available en-route, and further afield in the fells, farmland and woodland. The lake and surrounding area is managed by the National Trust, who offer boating and fishing permits to visitors.

The village of Buttermere is about half a mile north-west of the lake, the main facilities of which are accommodation providers but also it has The Fish Inn, which is a 5 minute walk from the centre of the village and the family run Bridge Hotel and restaurant. Also of interest is Buttermere Church which dates back to 1841.

The two market towns of Keswick (13 miles over the ) and Cockermouth (13 miles) are within easy reach of Buttermere, and offer a variety of shops, supermarkets, service stations, restaurants, and amenities to visitors. There are also many interesting attractions in the area including the Keswick Pencil Museum, the National Trust owned birthplace of William Wordsworth, and Jennings Brewery both in Cockermouth. The Lake District also has strong links with Beatrix Potter with ‘The World of Beatrix Potter Museum’ in Bowness-On-.

All in all “it is a truly magnificent place”.

HISTORY Dalegarth is believed to have been built in the late 1920s on the site of the original Hassness House. At the time the estate belonged to Victorian Manchester mill owner, George Benson, who built his house in a sheltered spot with a view down over terraced lawns to the lake. Mystery surrounds the cause but the house was completely destroyed by fire in the early 1900’s. Benson chose to rebuild the house in a different location and the Art Nouveau style Hassness now has a commanding position over the lake to the west of Dalegarth.

Dalegarth sits on the site of the old house and is built in a Swiss Chalet style thought to have been for the estate workers and at some point following the Second World War it was used as a convalescence home for soldiers. Immediately adjacent to the house a row of estate buildings provided further accommodation for staff and vehicles as well as workshops and stores.

The Hassness Estate has been used for over 50 years as an accommodation base for the growing number of visitors to the area. Dalegarth House was run as an independent Bed & Breakfast with associated camping from 2009 until May 2015.

DESCRIPTION Dalegarth House is of simple timber construction with a pitched and felt covered roof. It was purpose built as a guest/staff house over two floors with bedroom areas linking back to a shared dining and sitting area. There is a kitchen to the rear of the property and the bedrooms are a range of en-suite and standard double rooms but there is considerable scope for reconfiguration of the space to suit.

Adjacent to the house is a range of single storey estate garages and buildings which have been partially converted to provide a two bedroom Caretaker’s Flat, a pair of one bedroom staff apartments, a male and female toilet and shower facility to support the former campsite and four traditional garages each with their own track door and one with an inspection pit.

THE GARDEN & GROUNDS The approach to Dalegarth is over a shared access drive with Hassness House. There is a useful turning/parking area at the front whilst at the back the original terraced lawns remain.
