5 Director’s Message March 2020

Liz Yager March in New Orleans is always a wonderful time of the year. It’s not too hot or too cold and no hurricanes on the horizon. We can breathe easy and enjoy the Spring air. March at Temple Sinai is busy with the Roaring Twenties Gala (Have you bought your tickets yet?), Purim and two B’nai Mitzvah in addition to the regular educational and worship programming. Lots to celebrate and experience. And before you know it, April brings Passover Seders with the Young Adult Seder on April 8th, our Annual Second Seder on April 9th, and the LGBTQ Interfaith Community Seder on April 13th. Mark your calendars and be prepared to once again celebrate the Passover Story. As I was preparing for the Roaring Twenties 150th Birthday Gala, I have had the privilege of interviewing the past presidents and listening to their stories. We have been so fortunate to have had these dedicated and passionate members lead Temple Sinai through some challenging and exciting times. I have also been going through old photos and memorabilia with Cantor Colman and Cliff Kern as they share with me the back stories of each picture. As a result, I have learned so much about our history and impact. Many members have called Sinai “My Temple” or “My Home.” Many are proud of the leadership role Temple Sinai has taken to help the New Orleans community through feeding the needy, building homes, advocating for justice and providing scholarships. It is my hope that all of our congregants feel welcomed and grow to regard Temple Sinai as “Their Home” a home where they can be assured to have a safe, warm, inviting, enlightening, stimulating, educational and nourishing place to all.

Happy 150th Birthday!! Mazel Tov!

-Liz

This is a great Kimat Todah, Almost Time to Say Thanks event for kids who can have a turn with the Temple’s fancy bingo machine. Look out for our mailers on As I write this I am packing to go to Israel as one of your the event. We hope everyone will join us for this elected representatives to the World Zionist Congress and great event. Jewish Agency for Israel Board of Governors meetings. I have held this position for many years and it is due directly to -Keith Kornman the votes American Reform have cast in past Zionist Congress elections. So, I hope you have already voted in this year’s elections and if not, please put this bulletin down right now and send your smartphone to www.arza.org and vote. It is quick, easy, costs $7.50 to administer the elections and your individual vote has larger, telling consequences. The good news is that all the fuss and noise the 15 slates have been making in competing for votes has significantly increased voter participation. That is excellent. I hope the biggest increase is from our Reform community. Why is this column titled as it is? Because if you HAVE VOTED, todah rabah, thank you very much. But, if you HAVE NOT YET VOTED, there is still time, until mid March, to get your vote in. That is the kimat part. It is Hebrew for “almost” as the time to vote has ALMOST past. Thank you for your support in the past and I look forward to welcoming a new and larger ARZA contingent to the Congress in October. -Bill Hess [email protected]

At 6:15pm we will parade into the chapel for our special Purim Service. We will celebrate Purim with special songs and, of course, the reading of the Megillah – the Scroll of Esther. We will hand out groggers (or bring your own noise-makers) to drown out the name of evil Haman! Join us as we cheer on Esther and Mordechai and celebrate the survival of our Jewish people.

This Purim celebration is for all ages, from young to not-as-young-as-we-once-were! Everyone is encouraged to come in masks and costumes and get ready for a great time at Temple.

Chag Purim Sameach – Happy Purim! LGBTQ+LGBTQ+ Purim Event I am so thrilled to invite you to the latest installment in Temple Sinai’s Year of LGBTQ+ Jewish Holiday Celebrations! We begin with a discussion on women’s agency and consent in the Megillat Esther led by Prof. Jason Gaines of Tulane University, after which we’ll do what we Jews do best: eat, drink, and schmooze! Help yourself to snacks and drinks as we sit down to watch the classic piece of 90’s gay Jewish cinema, The Birdcage. It’s sure to be as loud as any grogger and as sweet as chocolate hamantaschen. And that these bags cannot be recycled through the city’s curbside recycling program? For her mitzvah project, Eden is collecting plastic bags to bring to a recycling center, where they will be sent to turn into things like fences, playground equipment, and backyard decking. 12 Cantor’s Message Music & more

One cannot help but take a moment to reflect that this month of March 2020 we are honoring Cantor Joel Colman 150 years of Temple Sinai. That length of time only becomes more real when we realize that our country was only 94 years old in 1870 and that we had congregants at that time whose parents were alive during the Revolutionary War. While I have been at Temple Sinai since 1999, that only accounts for 14% of the 150 years of Temple Sinai. I myself grew up in Detroit and my only connection with the city of New Orleans was when Tom Dempsey of some team called the Saints, hit that 63 yard field goal to beat my Detroit Lions. Well by now, having lived in New Orleans longer than my hometown, I certainly feel a strong connection to our community and synagogue. It is an honor to be a part of our history at Temple Sinai and I look forward to celebrating 150 years at our upcoming Gala on March 7. While this year’s Gala might not have an Indian motorcycle parked in the lobby (well I suppose I could, but it would not fit in with this year’s theme), I am sure our celebration will be most memorable.

The month of March is going to be book-ended by two marvelous music events. First off, on Sunday evening March 1, the New Orleans Opera and Temple Sinai will present a concert titled, Music to Lift the Spirit: American Opera and Song. Singing in this concert will be soprano Betsy Uschkrat and tenor Tyler Smith. The program begins at 7:00 p.m. and admission is $10. Then at the end of month on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., the New Orleans Symphony Chorus, along with the choirs of Dillard University and UNO, plus a 21 piece orchestra will present the oratorio, The Creation by Haydn. Ticket prices are $25 at the door and for more information please visit symphonychorus.org. I will be singing in both programs, and I hope you will take advantage of the opportunity to hear some top-notch music in our beautiful and acoustically vibrant sanctuary. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

13 The Installation of Rabbi Daniel Sherman

What a wonderful and meaningful Installation Shabbat that we shared together as a congregation on January 24-25, 2020. We accomplished two purposes: We officially welcomed Rabbi Daniel Sherman and his family to Temple Sinai, as we marked the beginning of the celebration of 150 years of Temple Sinai history. From dinner on Friday evening to lunch following morning services, it was a truly special Shabbat. On behalf of the entire congregation we want to thank everyone who helped to make this weekend happen and all who participated. A special thank you goes to our chairpeople, Tamie Bressler and Judy Gainsburgh, for all of their hard work and efforts. Thank you to all of our volunteers, our bakers, and our sponsors – Installation Shabbat would not have been possible without your help. We also want to thank both Touro Synagogue and Congregation Gates of Prayer for being here with us for this memorable Shabbat, as well as the many other leaders and members of the greater Jewish and interfaith communities. Todah Rabbah – many thanks – to Max Cohen, our official photographer for the weekend.
