Jewish Faith and Doubt on Screen Despite Judaism’s commandment against making graven images of God, films representing Jewish faith in God—or doubt in the face of collective and personal catastrophes and competing worldviews—have abounded from the advent of the movie industry. Since God cannot be visualized, movies must rely on depictions of an omnipotent historical and moral force, or a source of belief compelling Jews to endure martyrdom, persecution, and segregation, and to observe Jewish law and rituals. Motion pictures about how God informs modern Jewish lives have become more varied with the emergence of Jewish denominationalism and secular ideologies, like socialism or Zionism, often pitting factions within the Jewish community against each other. This area welcomes papers and panels that explore how Jewish belief and disbelief in God are constructed by filmmakers in documentaries and feature movies. The following themes are suggestions and should not be construed as the only topics that would fit in this area: The portrayal of Judaism in documentaries: Heritage: Civilization and the Jews (1984), A Life Apart (1997), and The Story of the Jews (2013). -

During this period, the national press reported on a variety of incidents involving Judaic1 exclusionary practices: for example, male Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers purposely leaving an official ceremony because it involved a female singing performance; ultra-Orthodox men spitting on a thirteen-year-old girl who was dressed “indecently”; and women being harassed on buses for not observing gender separation by moving to the back. These and other simi- lar occurrences were denounced by secular politicians and media, and even prominent figures within the observant community spoke against the spread of segregation. Concurrently, Israeli citizens took to the streets on more than one occasion in support of the victims of Judaic discrimination. The social uproar around these events signals a growing awareness within Israeli society of the patriarchal facets of Judaic practice and their control and oppression of women. This understanding recognizes that the Bible, as a text written by and for men, situates women as the quintessential Other, and thus acts as the condition for an institutional marginalization of womanhood that covers all spheres of Jewish religious life. -

Her debut feature, ‘Fill the Void,’ was highly acclaimed at the Venice Film Festival, snagged seven Israeli Oscars and is the country’s candidate for the Academy Award as best foreign film. What makes her story so special? She grew up secular and became ultra-Orthodox 20 years ago. There is something I have to ask: Did your husband see the movie? Yes. And your children? No. How was the movie received in your community? Will people see it? It was received very favorably. Most people saw it; some didn’t. It’s a problem, even at the level of how beautiful Hadas Yaron [the lead actress in the film] is. A genuinely religious man feels that his loyalty to his wife must be absolute. You don’t play with that. Why is looking at an actress in a movie “playing with that”? From his point of view, there is a girl in the movie whom he thinks is beautiful. He hasn’t looked at women for years; it excites him. It does something to him. But he doesn’t play with it; he has a wife to whom he is truly, but truly, committed. Maybe from the outside it looks like something unimportant, but it is actually something very genuine. -

Through the View Finder: Israeli Cinema and TV Dr. Miryam Sivan Course Number: 702.2690 Office Hours: Monday 12-13 Semester: Spring 2021 Location: 236, Student Building Class Time: Thursday 12:15-14:45 Phone: 04-824-2065 Class Location: TBA E-Mail: [email protected] Course Description: From mid-19th century daguerreotypes taken by Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey, to the first film taken by the brother Lumiere, from films sponsored by the Jewish Agency showing the early Eastern European Jewish pioneers, to the current explosion of Israeli cinema and television, dubbed the Golden Age of Israeli Television, by producers, stations, and film platforms around the world, in this class we will explore Israel in all its complexity through the camera view finder. Though the first feature films were only shot in the 1930s, and then just a few, since 1960 over 200 have been shot. Some, like Exodus, were Hollywood-based and established the sabra super- man image in the world's eye. But most were and are local productions filmed for a fraction of an American or European budget. A respectable number of Israeli films have been shortlisted in the Academic Award’s Foreign Film category, but up until recently, most of Israel’s films have been heard of or seen outside of the country though they represent a unique picture of a nation and a land in transition. We will watch movies and tv episodes (at home) and read critical articles on the development of Israel cinema to allow a more nuanced and multifaceted understanding of Israel's complex history of identity, place, community, and landscape -- and its continual metamorphosis through time. -
