Inside! 2017 VARAC Drivers Challenge. IMPORTANT NOTE: VARAC Car Eligibility Forms MUST be submiSed prior to race events in order to be included in the Drivers Challenge. Hurry! Your club needs you right now! Calling on all members, we need volunteers for VARAC Vintage Grand Prix! Please help make the VGP a success! We are only a few short weeks away from this years Vintage Grand Prix and the =me has come to ask for "volunteers" to help out with the event. First and foremost, Aileen Ashman is working as the event Chief Registrar, but she needs two or three computer literate people to help her. This is not a job you can just show up and do - some advance training is required on the motorsportsreg registra=on system. These posi=ons are par=cularly well suited to family and friends of members. The workload is heaviest on Thursday a_ernoon, and Friday morning. Second, paddock marshals are required for Wed a_er 5 and Thursday all day. We need help at these =mes to ensure the paddock is set-up with reasonable traffic flows and that the correct cars are in the right places. The Chief Paddock Marshal for the event is Paul Einarson, but for set-up 3 or 4 assistants would be helpful. -

14 QUEENS GATE PLACE MEWS, LONDON, SW7 5BQ PHONE +44 (0)20 7584 3503 FAX +44 (0)20 7584 7403 E-MAIL [email protected] 1958 BRM TYPE 25 Chassis Number: 258 Described by Sir Stirling Moss as the ‘best-handling and most competitive front-engined Grand Prix car that I ever had the privilege of driving’, the BRM P25 nally gave the British Formula One cognoscenti a rst glimpse of British single seater victory with this very car. The fact that 258 remains at all as the sole surviving example of a P25 is something to be celebrated indeed. Like the ten other factory team cars that were to be dismantled to free up components for the new rear-engined Project 48s in the winter of 1959, 258 was only saved thanks to a directive from BRM head oce in Staordshire on the express wishes of long term patron and Chairman, Sir Alfred Owen who ordered, ‘ensure that you save the Dutch Grand Prix winner’. Founded in 1945, as an all-British industrial cooperative aimed at achieving global recognition through success in grand prix racing, BRM (British Racing Motors) unleashed its rst Project 15 cars in 1949. Although the company struggled with production and development issues, the BRMs showed huge potential and power, embarrassing the competition on occasion. The project was sold in 1952, when the technical regulations for the World Championship changed. Requiring a new 2.5 litre unsupercharged power unit, BRM - now owned by the Owen Organisation -developed a very simple, light, ingenious and potent 4-cylinder engine known as Project 25. -

The Ex - Piers Courage, John Coombs 1967 McLaren M4A Chassis Number: M4A/2 • One of two works cars run by McLaren in 1967 for the European Formula 2 season, long before customer M4As became available. Owned by John Coombs and driven by Piers Courage while he was also a works BRM Formula 1 driver, scoring 2nd place at Zandvoort and 3rd at Hockenheim. • Bought by Courage in time for the 1968 Tasman Series, where he scored a phenomenal victory by a huge margin in the final round, beating the likes of Jim Clark in a Lotus 49. Courage also took a 2nd and three 3rds to finish 3rd in the series. • Sold to Australia at the conclusion of the Tasman Series in 1968 and raced successfully there by subsequent owners before returning to Europe in 1991. • Recently maintained by Speedsport, with Michael O’Brien taking victory at Cadwell Park in HSCC Classic Racing Cars. Benefitting from limited use on the Geoff Richardson built Cosworth FVA engine, 2017 fuel bag tanks and 2018 FIA HTPs. • A significant and fabulous McLaren in which you can race at some of the best circuits in Europe with Historic Formula 2 and in England with HSCC Classic Racing Cars and Aurora XL, while also being the pride of any collection. Formed in 1963 by New Zealander Bruce McLaren, McLaren Motor Racing has become a household name thanks to the continued presence and success in Formula 1. Bruce had begun his Formula 1 career as a driver, competing for Cooper alongside Jack Brabham. McLaren took the first of three Grand Prix wins for Cooper in 1959, as the youngest victor to that point at just 22, and finished second in the 1960 World Championship. -

JAGUAR RACING CARS A MONTHLY SERIES - Part 6 By Neville Barlow Jaguar Mark 2 The Mark II arrived in 1959 and it was very obvious from the Mark I. It had a wider rear window and more glass all around because of the slimmer door pillars. The rear track was widened by 3.5 inches, which gave the car more all- round stability. There were three new engine op$ons. The 2.4 litre was increased in ower to 120bh , the 3.4 litre to 210bh and the 3.8 litre had 220bh . The Mark II saloon was received with ra turous su ort because it eliminated many of the minor shortcomings of the earlier models. Many road tests were 1959 Mk 11 2.4 undertaken by Motoring ublica$ons. The A)TOCA, led the way with an introduc$on test in -ebruary 1960, by saying ./ery few cars indeed set out to o0er so much as the 3.8 litre Mark II 1aguar and none can match it in terms of value for money. In one com act car, an owner has 2ran Turismo erformance, town carriage manners and lu3urious family a ointments. The changes made for 1960, without doubt, re resent the greatest im rovements so far achieved between a 1aguar model and its redecessor, short of a whole new design4. And Grand Prix racing for Formula 1 single-seater cars is the RIX GREATS toughest of them all. The ultimate ambition of every racing driver since 1950, when the com petition was first introduced, has been to be crowned as 'World Cham pion'. In this, his fourth book, author Peter Miller looks into the back ground of just one of the annual qualifying rounds-the British Grand Prix-which go to make up the elusive title. Although by no means the oldest motor race on the English sporting calendar, the British Grand Prix has become recognised as an epic and invariably dramatic event, since its inception at Silverstone, Northants, on October 2nd, 1948. Tony Robinson, Alf’s assistant is on the right. After Hawthorn was 2nd to Harry Schell in a Vanwall in practice, Francis improved the 250F by dropping the axle ratio and taking a leaf out of the rear spring (DASO 147). Hawthorn then won the race from Schell. This was just after Hawthorn had left Vandervell’s team, dissatisfied with their reliability, and returned to Ferrari for the classic GPs. The port fuel injection engine of the 1955 Vanwall. The Bosch pump was driven from the front of the inlet camshaft and the fuel flow was controlled mechanically. The airflow was controlled by otherwise- empty Amal carburetter bodies close to the ports. This system can be contrasted with the unsuccessful SU system on Moss’ Maserati at Easter Goodwood. 1956 Practice for Easter Goodwood The new BRM P25 (IL4 2½ litre naturally- aspirated). This was its 3rd event after a non- start at Aintree and a DNF at Oulton Park in 1955. Hawthorn drove it but after transmission failure in the race which resulted in the car overturning was lucky to escape serious injury. P.2 of 9 The works Maserat 250F of Moss was fitted with port fuel injection by a Bosch pump. -

1959 Cooper T51 F2-23-59 Coventry Climax FPF 2.5 F2-23-59 started life in 1959 as a works car for the Cooper Grand Prix team when they won the World Constructors Championship and lead driver Jack Brabham became the World Drivers Champion. F2-23-59 was fitted with a 4 cylinder Coventry-Climax FPF and raced by Bruce McLaren throughout the year finishing 3rd in the British GP at Silverstone and then taking his maiden Grand Prix victory in the US Grand Prix at Sebring. Originally fitted with a 2.2 litre Coventry Climax FPF engine, even in period 2.5 litre units were at a premium, McLaren was finally issued with a full-house 2.5 litre FPF for the French GP and in the next Grand Prix, the British at Aintree, used it to good effect to finish 3rd and set equal fastest lap with Stirling Moss. McLaren had originally had a taste of 2.5 litre FPF power in practice at Monaco where he described the difference between the 2.2 and the 2.5 as “Startling”. And then in a fitting end to the 1959 GP season in the final race, the US Grand Prix at Sebring, Bruce McLaren won his first GP in F2-26-59’s last works outing. For 1960 F2-23-59 was sold to Fred Tuck & Horace Gould. Tuck privately entered the car in numerous Grand Prix with various drivers taking the wheel including Roy Salvadori and Lucien Bianchi who scored an excellent privateer’s result of 6th at Monaco.
