La poésie d'Elizabeth Bishop... Ma mère, la productrice Lucy Barreto, avait acheté les droits du livre RARE AND COMMONPLACE FLOWERS , le premier ouvrage consacré à la relation d'Elizabeth et Lota, en 1995. Elle est donc venue me proposer le projet, en espérant que je le réalise. Presque 10 ans plus tard, mon ex-femme, l'actrice Amy Irving, a décidé de monter un monologue autour d'Elizabeth Bishop intitulé A SAFE HARBOR FOR ELIZABETH , tiré d'une pièce brésilienne de Marta Goes. C'est à ce moment que ça a commencé à titiller mon intérêt. Alors j'ai lu le livre pour lequel ma mère avait acheté les droits. Aussitôt après l'avoir refermé, je me suis précipité à la découverte des poèmes d'Elizabeth. Tout cela était très intéressant, mais je devais trouver un angle. Pourquoi raconter cette histoire ? Le fait qu'Elizabeth ait vécu au Brésil n'était pas suffisant. Qui était-elle vraiment ? Qu'est-ce qui faisait l'essence de sa relation avec Lota ? C'est à ce moment que j'ai décidé de raconter une histoire sur la perte, et sur la façon dont elle tenait une place cruciale dans la vie de chacun... La rencontre avec Elizabeth et Lota... La productrice Lucy Barreto a eu la chance de rencontrer Elisabeth et Lota vers 1957/58, lors d'un diner organisé à l'hôtel Samambaia qui réunissait plusieurs artistes. Elle m’a raconté avoir observé Elizabeth et Lota à distance. Elles ne cessaient de se jeter des regards, Lota à Elizabeth, Elizabeth à Lota. Même quand elles étaient à l'opposé de la pièce, elles se regardaient et se souriaient. Le film a cette ambiance. C'est un film sur les émotions, sur les sentiments, c'est un film d'atmosphères. L'histoire... C'est une histoire d'amour. Une histoire d'amour entre deux femmes. Deux femmes complètements différentes, puisque l'une est une perdante dysfonctionnelle, faible, alcoolique, et que l'autre est une gagnante, elle est forte, c'est une faiseuse. Mais lorsqu'elles se rencontrent, elles tombent aussitôt amoureuses. Elles sont différentes, mais la plus faible des deux sera celle qui deviendra de plus en plus forte au fur et à mesure qu'elle sera confrontée à la perte. La perte de son père alors qu'elle n'avait que 8 mois. La perte de sa mère alors qu'elle n'avait que 5 ans. Elle a vu sa mère être emmenée et internée dans un asile psychiatrique. Mais bien qu'elle fût une alcoolique à la dérive, et sans véritable domicile, elle deviendra de plus en plus forte et finira par gagner le Pulitzer. Lota, issue d'une famille riche et puissante, deviendra au contraire de plus en plus faible parce qu'elle n'a jamais appris à gérer la perte, et quand elle perdra le grand amour de sa vie, et son grand projet, qui était le Parc Flamengo, son monde s'écroulera. Une histoire universelle... La découverte et la lecture du poème ONE ART ont été déterminantes. J'ai cherché ce qu'il y avait d'universel dans cette histoire, ce qui pourrait résonner chez chacun d'entre nous. « L'art de perdre n'est pas difficile à maîtriser. Perds quelque chose chaque jour... » Ça a été le déclic. La perte est le dénominateur commun. Je n'ai pas décidé de faire un biopic sur Elizabeth et Lota. J'ai décidé de faire un film sur la perte, et Elizabeth et Lota en seraient les personnages. Une histoire intemporelle... Le film couvre 15 ans. Tourner dans des endroits si différents en termes de décors et d'époques a été très compliqué. En ce qui concerne les costumes et le maquillage, je voulais que le spectateur se rende compte du temps qui passe, mais qu'il ne sache pas précisément en quelle année l'action se déroulait. Si au début du film, il est clairement établi que nous sommes en 1951, après cela je ne mentionne plus de dates, parce que je pense que c'est une histoire intemporelle, et je voulais faire ressortir cet aspect. Inspiration... Je dirais qu'Edward Hopper a été une de mes sources d'inspiration principales. Parce que son œuvre a beaucoup à voir avec "chiaro" et "scura", clair et obscur, et que c'est ce dont parle le film. Sur les choses qu'on choisit de voir, celles qui sont devant nous et qu'on ne voit pas. Et quand on les voit enfin, il est trop tard. Un point de vue étranger.... C'est clairement une histoire dans laquelle le Brésil est regardé à travers les yeux d'une étrangère. Un regard pointu, aiguisé, pertinent, pas du tout condescendant. C'est un des aspects de l'histoire que j'aime beaucoup. Elizabeth Bishop ne prenait pas de gants, et pourtant elle aimait le Brésil, mais d'une façon très précise et assez restreinte. Qu'est ce qui vous a poussé à incarner Elizabeth Bishop ? Son intelligence, son talent, sa vision, son ambigüité et ses nombreuses failles. J'ai lu le scénario et je suis tout de suite tombée amoureuse d'Elizabeth et Lota. C'était très intéressant de lire un scénario où les trois rôles principaux étaient féminins. Trois personnages riches et complexes, et parfois totalement imprévisibles. Votre approche du personnage... J'ai commencé par lire REMEMBERING ELIZABETH BISHOP : AN ORAL HISTORY , un livre de témoignages de personnes l’ayant côtoyée à différents moments de sa vie. Le livre revient sur son enfance, l'école, le lycée, puis Vassar, New York, Key West et enfin de nouveau New York. Tous ces gens avaient un point de vue très différent sur elle, et racontaient des histoires qui n'avaient absolument rien à voir. Ce qui souligne à quel point c'était une personnalité complexe. Elle était très secrète et n'était pas du genre à laver son linge sale en public. Lire sa poésie m'a énormément aidé à comprendre sa personnalité, parce qu'elle y mettait beaucoup d'elle-même, mais d'une façon très subtile. J'ai également lu sa correspondance avec Robert Lowell, et j'ai écouté des enregistrements de ses lectures publiques. Enfin, voir des photos de ses manuscrits et de ses notes m'a aidée à imaginer son processus créatif... Bishop et la sexualité... Je pense qu'Elizabeth était très moderne dans la façon qu'elle avait de vivre sa vie. Sa réticence du début avec Lota ne vient pas du fait qu'elle était mal à l'aise avec le fait d'être lesbienne. Elle a eu de longues relations avec des femmes, avant et après Lota. Cela venait plus du fait qu'elle avait peur d'être de nouveau abandonnée, et de souffrir. Et aussi parce que Lota était déjà dans une relation avec son amie de l'université. Quand vous tombez amoureux, il y a toujours un moment où vous êtes comme au bord d'une falaise, vous vous battez contre ce sentiment parce que vous savez qu'une fois que vous aurez cédé, plus rien ne pourra l'arrêter.

    THESIS ABSTRACT THE SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF: HYPERREALITY, FANTASY, AND THE WANING REALITY PRINCIPLE IVY R. ROBERTS JUNE 2009 The twentieth century brought technologies, such as film, video, and the Internet, that fundamentally altered the way human kind interacts and perceives the world. Investigating trends in popular culture, youth culture, the media, the Internet, and film and video technologies, these chapters pull together facets of contemporary thought in order to make sense of the digital age, a time where we take for granted the speed and magnitude of information. Deconstructing our way of seeing, it becomes clear how we take for granted the images flung at us through the media: images that bear little relevance to the everyday world as we naturally perceive it. In movies, advertisements, newspapers, and web pages, constructed images hail us to view the world in a specific way. This constructed gaze becomes manufactured to a simulated degree as we travel further into an age of hyperreality. The chapters herein raise a number of questions: how do we perceive the media; do we take our way of seeing for granted; how do we understand the power mechanisms behind the media; how do the media play upon our personal desires; how do the media construct beliefs? What’s particularly interesting in this digital information age is the effect it has on adolescents. Issues such as coming of age, historical perspective, memory, and addiction inform a broad study of how the very term “teen” infects our constraining age-consciousness. It’s critical at this juncture to look to the young people who will herald the future.

Yu♮ Abstract We have reviewed several state-of-the-art machine learning approaches to different types of link based clustering in this chapter. Specifically, we have pre- sented the spectral clustering for heterogeneous relational data, the symmetric con- vex coding for homogeneous relational data, the citation model for clustering the special but popular homogeneous relational data – the textual documents with ci- tations, the probabilistic clustering framework on mixed membership for general relational data, and the statistical graphical model for dynamic relational cluster- ing. We have demonstrated the effectiveness of these machine learning approaches through empirical evaluations. 1 Introduction Link information plays an important role in discovering knowledge from data. For link-based clustering, machine learning approaches provide pivotal strengths to de- velop effective solutions. In this chapter, we review several specific machine learn- ing approachesto link-based clustering. We by no means mean that these approaches are exhaustive. Instead, our intention is to use these exemplar approaches to show- case the power of machine learning techniques to solve the general link-based clus- tering problem. When we say link-based clustering, we mean the clustering of relational data. In other words, links are the relations among the data items or objects.
