  • The Suspension of Disbelief: Hyperreality, Fantasy, and the Waning Reality Principle
THESIS ABSTRACT THE SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF: HYPERREALITY, FANTASY, AND THE WANING REALITY PRINCIPLE IVY R. ROBERTS JUNE 2009 The twentieth century brought technologies, such as film, video, and the Internet, that fundamentally altered the way human kind interacts and perceives the world. Investigating trends in popular culture, youth culture, the media, the Internet, and film and video technologies, these chapters pull together facets of contemporary thought in order to make sense of the digital age, a time where we take for granted the speed and magnitude of information. Deconstructing our way of seeing, it becomes clear how we take for granted the images flung at us through the media: images that bear little relevance to the everyday world as we naturally perceive it. In movies, advertisements, newspapers, and web pages, constructed images hail us to view the world in a specific way. This constructed gaze becomes manufactured to a simulated degree as we travel further into an age of hyperreality. The chapters herein raise a number of questions: how do we perceive the media; do we take our way of seeing for granted; how do we understand the power mechanisms behind the media; how do the media play upon our personal desires; how do the media construct beliefs? What’s particularly interesting in this digital information age is the effect it has on adolescents. Issues such as coming of age, historical perspective, memory, and addiction inform a broad study of how the very term “teen” infects our constraining age-consciousness. It’s critical at this juncture to look to the young people who will herald the future.

  • A SCREENTIME Production for ABC TV They Know the Law Backwards
A SCREENTIME production for ABC TV They know the law backwards … … but they have a lot to learn about life! As at 30.7.11 Delving into the extraordinary world of the Department of Public Prosecutions and its young eager lawyers, CROWNIES is the new 22 x 1 hour drama produced by SCREENTIME Australia for ABC TV. CROWNIES follows five young solicitors, as they face the pressures and endearing madness of modern single life - in a fast paced workplace that highlights the moral dilemmas and big issues facing an apparently civilized society. In a world that exists solely to see ‘wrong-doers’ brought to justice, and where the average age of the solicitors is 27, there is a big divide between these young solicitors and the barristers at the top. Yet they are the initial point of contact with the police, and it is they who do most of the liaising with the victims and the witnesses - and recommend what goes to court. They are committed, idealistic and hard-working, but their lives away from the office are riddled with aspirations, explorations, fragile relationships and partying. A SCREENTIME production for ABC TV Page 2 ABOUT THE PRODUCTION Currently in production, the outstanding ensemble cast includes Todd Lasance (Cloudstreet, Underbelly Files – Tell Them Lucifer Was Here, Rescue Special Ops, Home & Away) Hamish Michael (Spirited, City Homicide, Lucky Miles); Ella Scott Lynch (City Homicide, All Saints, The Falls); Andrea Demetriades (Bell Shakespeare Company, All Saints) and Indiana Evans (A Model Daughter: The Killing of Caroline Byrne, H2O

On September 2nd, Fathers Day 1984, two motorcycle clubs – the Bandidos and the Comancheros – went to war at a public swap meet. After a brief but violent battle, seven people had been shot dead, including a young innocent bystander, and some forty other club members needed hospitalisation. Brothers in Arms is the story of how that day came to pass. In the 1970s, the outlaw bikie scene was in its fledgling days. More wild west than organized crime, the Comancheros vied with many other motorcycle gangs for territory. As the tribes fought, the Comancheros were also fighting their own internal battle, with the Supreme Commander, Jock Ross, recruiting men to his club with the purpose of being the one dominant motorcycle gang in Sydney and eventually Australia. Not everyone agreed with his tactics. When the men challenged him, Jock split the club in what was a betrayal of his most loyal acolyte, Anthony “Snoddy” Spencer. With this act, Jock Ross misjudged the feelings of his men. Instead of staying with him, the majority mutinied, sticking with Snoddy who formed the Bandidos. And the seeds for Milperra were sown. With powerful forces within each of the rival clubs demanding retribution, a series of tit-for-tat attacks led to war being declared.

  • ANZAC Girls Presskit
FOREVER young FOREVER brave FOREVER IN OUR hearts COMING SOON Introduction Honouring the Centenary of the commencement of WW1, ANZAC Girls is a moving new six-part series based on the unique, and rarely told true stories of Australian and New Zealand nurses serving at Gallipoli and the Western Front. In WW1 over 3,500 young Australian and New Zealand women served as nurses with the two fledgling nations’ army services. Nearly 300 were decorated for courage beyond the call of duty. Facing the brutality of war, they were remarkable women, doing extraordinary work, serving amidst bombing raids, poison gas and terrible disease – saving lives and transforming the spirits of the soliders. But through it all they experienced exceptional friendship, love, success and heartbreak. Drawing on the book The Other ANZACS by Peter Rees as well as from diaries, letters, photographs and historical achievements ANZAC Girls is based on real events and real people - Alice (Georgia Flood), Elsie (Laura Brent), Olive (Anna McGahan), Hilda (Antonia Prebble) and Grace (Caroline Craig). Like their brothers, fathers, lovers and husbands, these ANZAC Girls are our heroes. But they were also just ordinary girls – our sisters, our daughters, ourselves – looking for adventure, love, fun and friendship. This is their story... Over 3,720 Australian and New Zealand nurses served overseas during World War One. Fifty-six were awarded the Royal Red Cross. Two hundred and ten were awarded the Associate Red Cross. Only seven ANZAC nurses were awarded Military Medals. Key Cast Sister Alice Ross King Georgia Flood Sister Hilda Steele Antonia Prebble Sister Elsie Cook Laura Brent Synopsis Sister Olive Haynes Anna McGahan Matron Grace Wilson Caroline Craig It’s World War One and the number of Australian and New Zealand army troops deployed to Europe and the Middle East begins to swell.
